This is a great place we stumbled upon as we were looking for some jazz music. Our server Josey was friendly and attentive. We weren’t too hungry so we ordered a burger to split. The burger was delicious. Music was awesome. Cool decor, friendly staff, happening place. We’ll definitely be back.

AMAZING PLACE. Atmosphere and vibe is so cool. Fancy but not over the top. The musicians downstairs had absolutely unreal talent. Food is top quality, bar and table service is great. If you’re in the area be sure to make time to stop by here especially if there’s live music. You’ll leave with a big smile.

A super cool spot with great live music. Weve been 4-5 times. Be sure to make reservations, head downstairs and step right in to an underground jazz vibe right out of the 1930s. Great cocktails and a limited, but tasty menu. We were just grazing, so we split a New York steak - it was just perfect.

Great spot on an unassuming corner in the Tenderloin. Host was most accommodating, despite us not having a reservation. The basement performance space was unique and well laid out. Wait staff was very friendly and also accommodating. Late night food was good; I recommend the popcorn and cheese plate. Finally, the music was wonderful, this was a special place for Jazz in the city.

This restaurant/bar/venue is great for a night out in the city. However, you will need to make reservations and a food minimum of $30 per person. It has a long history as a long standing jazz bar. The main bar is located on the top floor where you will wait until you are seated. Downstairs is the stage where you listen to a live jazz band and order food. The food is delicious!

I liked the club it is a good set and I always love reverb on bottom line clubs . The band was ok, smooth with a twist of funk, food is a little overpriced if not asked the entire course menu. I suggest to go for the chef’s course menu of planning dinner there. Food is good , dont get me wrong just a little above the tab.

After my third time visiting this venue, I was very disappointed this last time. It was my birthday. The music was disappointing, but my 3 star review actually comes from the table service. We made reservations and had food and drinks. Our waitress was polite, and even though she told us several times it was her first night working there, I expected better. Not very attentive. Since we werent enjoying the music, we asked for the check before the music set was over. The first bill she handed to us was for the table next to us. We let her know, and she gave us another bill. The next was our bill, but there were several items on the bill we didnt order. We told her of this mistake. She gave us a third bill, and it was correct, so we finally paid for it. Afterwards, we checked our credit card statements, and somehow our credit card was charged for 2 separate bills that same evening from Black Cat. The first charge was for $94.76 and the second was for $99.92. Now we need to fight with our credit card carrier to have this sorted. Very disappointing birthday experience.

This was a great place. Very trendy, cool jazz club. Go downstairs to see the band and listen to the music. Its recommended you make a reservation. The room is cozy, but you can still get a good view. The service here is pretty good too. Staff is helpful and friendly. The only knock would be the location is in the Tenderloin, but taking a ride share will make it safer.

Another great intimate jazz spot. This place has love acts downstairs on the weekend which is great, but it is super tight down there, especially if you sit at the bar, and there is a cover typically for most acts, even to sit at the bar, of $20+ dollars, and that doesnt include a drink. I go here for certain acts but prefer the cover free nature of Mr. Tipples more.

3.5 stars. Cool jazz based club, in a dumpy area.two floors, bottom floor has live jazz band playing and a bar.top floor is bar area only.you can hear the music from upstairs as well though. Dark ambience, but a cool vibe. This place is located in a dumpy area though. You may not feel too safe as you park and walk to this location. Drinks are ok, but nothing special.local jazz band plays there a lot, didnt see any name acts listed on the calendar. The house band was ok though, mixing it up with jazz, singing and some funk/hip hop vibes. Cool place if you want to change it up.

The music they played this Sunday evening was ok but was to my taste going too much towards funk. Not that bad, but not jazzy enough to my taste. I came here once before and the service was decent and the jazz was excellent. However I returned recently, sat at the bar, and waited about 15 minutes at the for any service. The bartender seem to be purposely ignoring us, did not so much to say hello or that he would be with us soon. Eventually I felt like I should get his attention and I told him that we were ready to order, and he gave an incredibly snide and demeaning remark, explaining how he will basically get to us when he gets to us, and how basically there were like 10 people in front of us, even though he had made about 2 drinks in the time we were waiting; he was moving incredibly slowly. I additionally overheard another customer who was complaining that he had not received his drink yet. This guy was clearly having a bad day (or maybe was on drugs?) and was taking out on customers. Really upsetting, because the music there can be really good, but I cannot recommend this location after this upsetting encounter. We immediately left and will not be returning.

My new favorite spot for live jazz. An intimate setting featuring live music, tasty cocktails, and good food.I love the atmosphere here - laid back yet special, attention on the music, but great service all the same.Trout & caviar toast - 2 stars. Topped with egg salad and a microscopic piece of smoked trout, plus three little caviar eggs. Unfortunate, especially given the price tag.Lamb meatballs - 4 stars. The flavors were on point despite the crumbly texture of the meat, and I liked the depth of both flavor and texture added by the chickpeas, fresh grapes, and cucumber yogurt.Mussels with chorizo - 4 stars. Served in a hearty and delicious creamy broth with a couple pieces of toasted bread. Healthy sized portion.Cheese plate - 4 stars. Three really different types of cheese, served with a few baguette slices, honeyed pine nuts, and honeyed... currants? Cherries? Craisins? They were fun. The cheeses were varied in terms of softness, potency, etc. and it was a lot of food for two people to share.Ill definitely be back!

Worst service Ive had at a restaurant of this supposed quality. Waiter got in a shouting match with our birthday girl when she tried to order out of turn. His reasoning was that if he wrote anything down out of order that doling out the apps/entrees would turn into an auction. What? About a third of the entrees arrived 20 minutes before the remaining ones (except the one that never arrived and we asked to cancel). And the waiter could not have cared any less. No apology, no effort or even offer to remedy the lack of an entree. Same with the missing dessert. Drinks took over 15 minutes every time. Inexcusable for someone only working a couple tables.

Interesting spot. Easy to find, upstairs (upstairs is really street level) has a good feel to it, not bad, good amount of seating, large bar. You can hear the music from downstairs, which might be a better options because the space downstairs is awkwardly laid out. If youre not at the small tables between the bar and stage, dont expect much of a view. Fortunately, you dont need to see musicians to appreciate their sound. Cocktails are very good and the duck fat fries are unbelievable.

This is one of my favorite clubs in the City. The ambiance is intimate, tasteful and friendly. Its a romantic place to bring a date and equally perfect for a night out with close friends. The jazz bands cover a wide array of styles and the gigs change each weekend. If you dont want to talk over the music, you can hang out in the bar upstairs and enjoy a cocktail. The act in the downstairs portion of the club is piped upstairs so everyone can hear it. Its sometimes hard to get a table downstairs so if you really want to catch a performance, its best to check their website and reserve early. As a musician I have to say this venue just has one of the coolest vibes for jazz/funk in the city. Its got incredible sound, an amazingly kind staff, and just a very cool vibe overall. I saw Butcher Brown here last week and I had just found out my guitar was stolen a few minutes earlier from my studio and they even offered to let me in for free to make me feel better (which I turned down because I want the money to go to the band). But seriously you can tell the people here deeply care about the music, not just the bar, food, or drinks. Really great spot if youre looking to unwind, go on a date, and chill out in an old school meets new school jazz club in the city.

To the servers, the music, and the overall vibe of the restaurant, it was a top notch evening. My wife and I had plans to enjoy a nice night out in the city and are always willing to try new restaurants. We took a chance on Black Cat and they really delivered. We enjoyed the music so much we had to shack hands with the members of the Black Cat band. Then there were the servers. Our first server was great, my wife and I totally clicked with him, but then ended up chatting more with a server by the name of Carlos. He blew us away. Next thing we know we are being helped by him and there were no hard feelings by our first server. You can tell everyone gets along with each other very well that works there. Our only regret is that we didn’t have more time there. We easily spent 2.5 hours in the restaurant being blown away by the music and servers. The only reason we left when we did was because we had plans later that evening. We can’t wait to come back soon to bring friends along!
