One of our favorites. Kids love to come here for a picnic or just to see some of the older graves. Shady and cooler on hot days.

Beautiful place to write and sip tea. Even the dead need company :) I wonder can you sit in the cemetery after dark? I would love to but I don’t wish to get into legal trouble

I’ve been taking tourists here on my “Sacred Places” tour of the city — a wonderful addition — but for the first time today I brought a city bike tour here. It won’t be the last! We bill our tour as “Best of the City” and it couldn’t have done better, with spectacular trees in their gorgeous fall colors, amazing old gravestones and new ones too, and a Metro-sponsored report by ghosts on the sad and often gruesome manner of their death. “Lesson kids: don’t play with dynamite.” So perfectly Portland!

Gorgeous cemetery! Some really nice tombstones and the occasional schizophrenic homeless man doing laps around the graveyard. Plus good places to eat on the adjacent streets!

If you pay attention to the dates youll notice how many infants, kids and young people died back in the old days. Tons of graves 1880s-1910 of the young. You can always look at the statistics but it really becomes evident here. Would be a great tool for those who dont appreciate modern medicine.Ton of stones around the perimeter that are barely legible anymore and some partially buried, and Im sure some that are unmarked or lost. Theres even a few almost completely engulfed in a tree. Also the trees here are great.

For a cemetery, this place is really nice. I used to live close by and would often go on walks through here because it was so peaceful and well kept. It’s also really interesting to see the history here. They offer cemetery tours as well for those that are into that kind of thing.

A delightful jewel box of a cemetery that encompasses local history, horticultural design and modern usage. Beautiful and tranquilly sylvan oasis of the dead for the living.Certain elements concerning the unmarked graves of itinerant Chinese workers and indigent asylum patients provide a slightly controversial aspect to the place but the citys commitment to memorializing these areas at some point in the future remains laudable.

Its a neighborhood refuge from city noise, usually populated with mothers and baby strollers getting their exercise. Most interesting are the tombs of early settlers for whom some of the major streets were named after. Then there are the newer monuments with the likenesses of the deceased laser etched into black granite giving a ghostly affect.Quiet areas are great for meditation and reflection. A must see if your spending any time in the Southeast part of the city.

Like a park. Great history and resting place of many of Portlands past dignitaries. Huge variety of plant life. Bring a camera - some of the gravestones are awesome and touching. Madonna filmed movie outside of the mausoleum here. They do Halloween tours that are wonderful - visit the spirits at their graves...

Lone Fir is An enchanting, archaic last resting place for many thousands of early Portlanders, including prominent and influential persons of that era. It dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, and was established in 1855. It precedes the civil war (1863) in its establishment by 8 years, as well as the state of Oregons incorporation into the Union which did not occur until 1859. This is a old cemetery and is incorporated into the registry of historical places. The name Lone Fir itself suggests that at the time of ts establishment, there was but a single tree its entire 30 + acre plot. This stands in stark contrast to its current heavily wooded and scenic surroundings. It is profoundly cool to just take a stroll thru and look at all the ornate, oxidised moss covered grave markers. Consumed by so many played out past lives, one cannot help but to reflect on their mortality, as well as of the fragile, temporary human condition in general.

One of Portlands many historic parks. The park is well maintained, and has some of Portlands many founding fathers and pioneers buried there. I suggest going during the Halloween season when volunteers are leading spooky tours.
