This was such an incredible play- they used a lot of the most famous songs within the movie Fantastic dancing, singing and use of the stage! The Ambassador theater was very clean & all staff was so friendly & informative. I would definitely recommend a night out to see CHICAGO! ( we watched the movie right after as well) such a great one! Living in NYC I see at least a dozen Broadway shows a year. I saw Chicago for the first time about 20 years ago and loved it. I’ve been dying to go back for years now. I was excited to take my daughter to see it for the first time tonight. She loves musical theater and is familiar with much of the music from Chicago. There are several iconic songs that are classic Broadway and are always memorable. What a disappointment this current production was! I’ve seen better dinner theater. The theater itself is old and cramped. Many NYC theaters are. I can deal with it for a great show, but not this. The orchestra which was on stage and somewhat involved in the show, was great. But it took up the majority of the stage. Maybe that’s why they put nothing into creating a real set. The two main actresses are clearly talented but too old for the parts they played, making it very unconvincing. Both Roxy and Velma look like grandmothers. Hot bodied grandmas but still not young enough for these roles. I actually found all the performances lackluster and flat, the acting, the singing, and the dancing which I remember standing out in the earlier production. I’m not sure if it was the sound system or the lack of energy but I felt like I was watching a movie at home with the volume too low or no surround sound. Lack of energy (and effort) really sums up this production. The waiter singing “Mr. Cellophane man” at Ellens Stardust Diner was more entertaining than the rendition in the show. The stage was constantly black... costumes, props, set... in never changed with the exception of a ladder swinging out once in a while. The costumes looked more like stripper wear than sexy 1920s. If you weren’t familiar with the plot you probably wouldn’t have even known when or where it was set. Other than throwing on a blazer there were no costume changes. Lazy, lazy, or just low budget? I still can’t believe how much I paid for this mediocrity and that’s with a discounted ticket. This show has seen it’s day. Save your money. Hopefully it will close and somewhere down the road someone will properly revive it to its former glory.

I’ll be honest: this play was much more about seeing a significant part of broadway history than seeing the content. Set your expectations low because you will not be thrilled or captivated by this show. Erika Jayne was especially lackluster. The stage was completely boring. It’s time to let this show die for a while and revive it with an updated stage, outfits and dance numbers.

This show is not worth it. I saw a community theater performance that far out rated this Broadway version. Very disappointed. Actors are too old and have no energy. The band is great but everything else sub par. Dancing very basic same few steps. Very poorly designed staging if I hadnt known the story I wouldnt have been able to follow it. Seats are agony and Im only 53. Book something else.

Absolutely the worst show! Save your money theater has a tiny stage and the orchestra takes up most of it! Actors too old no change in wardrobe or props but then again there was no room for them on the stage to begin with. This was not at all like the movie! Big let down and seats empty out during intermission. We actually left 30 before it ended! We had amazing seats that cost over $600 so this was a big disappointment.

Really didnt enjoy the show in terms of trying to follow it. So sets on stage or anything! Hard to follow due to the fact there was no set back ground or uniform change. Women were barely dressed, no class. No hint of the 1920s era. And it was ridiculous how much they charged for water $6! Dont waste your money here.

Just spent the last few days in New York City to see some of the worlds most popular broadway shows. First Hamilton, followed by Wicked. Both absolutely mind blowing, spectacular musicals. Next came Chicago... my anticipation and excitement for this show was through the roof because of the amazing shows I had seen the days prior. To my surprise, it was the biggest let down I could have possibly experienced. It was just so boring! I am a fan of the movie of course, excellent music and dancing and colors and costumes! The play does not give you any of those things! It doesn’t put you into the story at all, it doesn’t feel like the 1920s, and the lack of energy was quite possibly the worst part about the entire experience. The actors would STAND AROUND and sing with mediocrity. When there would be dancing, it was the same move over and over again. Definitely have to do your research before seeing these shows!

Watched it for 2nd time. First time was with cousins, but this time was with my mom. I actually enjoyed the show due to the extreme creativity of using the orchestra to be set up in a way that theyre centered to have the set be set up around them and using the orchestra as part of a jazz club set. Even my mom enjoyed it so much, and shes usually against watching something that involves stories shes not all too familiar with.

Small lobby and not enough bathrooms. Which I guess is pretty normal for an old theater. Classic old theater with beautiful chandelier. Chicago wasnt my favorite musical. My daughter and I saw the show and we were disappointed . Shes a dancer and has done production numbers for regional competitions when she was in HS and theyve done percent better performances than this! The orchestra was impressive as the music was on point but the main characters were old and no energy( I thought Velma and Roxy were suppose to be young performers..), AND no costume changes, so the entire cast wore black outfits. The singing and vocals were good, but we really were expecting MORE from the stage presence aspect. Not worth $130 a seat for center orchestra. If I paid $50, I wouldve been satisfied. But for a show on Broadway and in the Big Apple, I expected a better show for the amount I paid.

A really good show, with some great performers. The only downside was a VERY eager staff member. The tall, slim gentleman was running around telling people to be quiet and take off their hats ahead of the performance. He was obviously keen to make sure it wasnt spoiled for others. HOWEVER, this guy couldnt sit still through the performance and kept on standing up to check for any illegal hat wearing :-) Every time he stood up, he blocked our view of the stage and distracted us.

Had a decent evening in Broadway, watching Chicago. Booked ticket on-line through todays tix. Choreography and Music was fantastic. Tera C. Macleods portrayal of Velma Kelly was brilliant. Three words: not worth it. A world-class play but a small-town-nightclub-standard performance. Small theatre for Hobbits with uncomfortably compact seating. Aging cast that lacks energy and passion. No contrast between Velma and Roxie--just two grandma-aged women in their mid-to-late 50s who fight declining stamina and try painstakingly to earn bread. Billy Flynn appears to be anything but that charming, smart, greedy, capable and yet cocky lawyer. Amos is about right. Mary Sunshine is a surprise. What a drag! Overall, this should not be performed on Broadway as we pay $100+ and expect world-class shows. I have enjoyed 3 other shows, but this one is a huge disappointment!

My girlfriend and I had to make a decision about which Broadway Musical to watch while in Manhattan and decided for Chicago. The overall experience was great. Great place, great actors and great performance. I didnt like the story so much though, but thats my personal taste. I think if the story that is told in a musical is important for you, then there are other good options. But when it comes to seeing actors performing together on stage, this musical is a perfect choice.

We were disappointed by the level of the performance. While the band was great, and the singing was decent, the dancing, the acting, the contrast between characters, and the the stage itself just werent at $100 per seat Broadway level. If this had been in Knoxville TN with a small town troupe trying to pull off the show with a $650 budget, it would have been an acceptable Friday night out for $35. This is not a top level production at all, and the material has so much more potential than this. VERY SAD NOTE: The closing number was completely out of sync and full on amateurish. The big finale was a big flop.

Review №70

To put it bluntly, this show is bad. With that being said, I felt the performers were great. I had no issue with the acting, the dancing or the singing. This is a talented cast. Unfortunately, the talent is wasted on a very poorly written and completely unentertaining show.I went into this with no expectations at all. I happened to find cheap tickets and enjoy live theater so I went. I have never seen the movie and literally didnt even do any research to see what the show is about. I also did not look at any reviews prior.I went in completely cold and a completely open mind, excited to see a live show. But like I said, it is quite bad. The storyline was uninteresting, there was no character development. I felt myself having no feelings toward any of the characters. I did not care about the plots outcome. There was nothing to suck me in. The show felt like a series of random song and dance numbers with a story thrown in there just to give the excuse of having a show. And the best musical numbers were very good at best. Nothing, I would consider to be great. And some numbers were boring and uneventful.Even the finale was just OK. There were better musical numbers in the middle of the show. And that might just be on the choreography. Again, you could definitely see plenty of talent on the stage so I dont think the performers are the issue. Its just overall not a well written show and the choreography could have been better. I was expecting much more grandness I guess. I didnt get it.My girlfriend and I contemplated leaving at intermission but I felt I paid for the ticket so I wanted to see the whole thing through hoping the second half would get better. It did not.As for the theater, it is a fairly intimate theater with only one (very small) bathroom (one for men and one for women) which is located on the mezzanine level. I recommend going to the bathroom before arriving to the theater or arriving early. At intermission, if you need to go, go fast to beat the line. And yes, orchestra ticket holders will need to go upstairs to get to the bathroom. But otherwise, the theater was fine, the acoustics were good. I would see another show at this theater, but not this show.

This was my first broadway musical and it was epic! We’re not allowed to take pictures during the show so the best I could do was this ticket :-)The artists, the music...everything was amazing. I would definitely recommend this as a broadway experience.Overall it’s one of the cheaper options yet we still had to pay $80 for the ticket plus $30 in tax to get a less-than-optimal seat on the side of the theatre on the top floor. That was a bit annoying as the angle prevents you from seeing the entire depth of the stage. Try to aim for seats closer to the center if possible.Oh and if you’d like to have a drink, the options are $15, $25, and $35 for small, medium, and large respectively. And if you’re planning on having another one at the break, you could pre-order it before the show so that you don’t have to wait in line at the break! And if you keep your first cup and bring it with you for a refill (instead of getting a new cup), you’ll get a $5 discount off your second drink

HORRIBLE. My husband and I got up and left at intermission. As a native New Yorker who has seen many shows both on and off broadway, I am shocked by how terrible this show was and how it has somehow managed to stay on Broadway and take up valuable theater space for years. I wish I thought to read the MANY terrible TripAdvisor reviews before attending.1. Scenery and set design: Dismal. Zero set, aside from the orchestra taking up two thirds of the stage and a couple of ladders andchairs.2. Costuming: what costuming? Trashy spandex and fishnet that look like it was sourced from an 8th Ave smut shop - not a even a shred of any 1920’s attire that made sense.3. Performance: offensively bad. As an Asian-American myself, I was excited to see someone of Asian descent cast in a lead role. However, her nearly-parody-level accent was totally inappropriate for the role and (worse) was nearly unintelligible as a viewer. She had zero charisma or stage presence, in a role that is literally written to require seductiveness and pizzaz. The only part of this show that didn’t make me cringe (as I thought about the money I wasted on tickets) was the voice of the two other leads who played Billy and Mama. However, this not enough to merit calling this a Broadway show.No amount of overpriced drinks could make this better for us, so we just left at intermission. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO SEE SOMETHING ELSE. There are so many wonderfully creative Broadway and Off Broadway shows, this is an embarrassment.
