The building is under construction but everyone is super friendly and the studios were roomy and air conditioned, our $8 class instructor Catie was nice and a very good dancer

I dont want to write a negative feedback but I have to because this is an important issue. Ive been dancing as a hobby at various studios for a long time and had an unfortunate experience at Gibney. The teacher made a personally uncomfortable comment in the beginning of the class where she said Are you two sisters? pointing at me and other student of same race. I think she was trying to be friendly but it wasnt right. After we said no she tried to make her comment valid by saying no? maybe similar shape or size.Commenting on someones appearance is unacceptable. We live in 21st century New York. The whole class I couldnt concentrate on dancing because I was aware of my appearance and started to question why I look similar to the other person. My sense of self-worth and individuality was diminished by her single comment. This was not an uplifting experience which dance should provide but rather a downer. I request a sincere apology from them and the teacher should learn from this.

I am very grateful to have been introduced to the Simonson technique at Gibney. After years off from regularly taking class, I rediscovered my love for modern dance thanks to learning from Apollonia Holzer. Her weekly class became a treasured ritual. Im inspired to explore more of this movement method.

I really hate giving bad reviews but I had a very unfortunate experience with Gibney. I never got a chance to actually rent the space because after what seemed to be positive communication and responsiveness to my needs there was dead silence. My communication started with Mariana and Nicole in early May. I was asked to provide information about dates and my needs. I provided all of this information and after several emails asking for updates I never heard back. If they were unable to accommodate me for my event I would have appreciated an email that informed me and I would have moved on. I hope that no one has this experience as the space seem beautiful but I wont know because I was not able to move forward with the rental.

The classes themselves are excellent, as are the facilities. But the whole place seems to be run by (unpaid?) interns who are very friendly but clearly haven’t been trained or empowered to take any decisions. Which is not their fault, but managements fault. Maybe spend a little money on your staff instead of exploiting young dancers?
