Break wall is a fun place to take the family fishing. Only gave it 3 stars on this visit cause I didn’t catch anything other visits have been 5 stars cause it wasn’t raining and I actually caught some fish. Good place to go for a medium impact run/walk/hike.

According to the internet: Contrary to urban legend, the Hilo breakwater was built to dissipate general wave energy and reduce wave action in the protected bay, providing calm water within the bay and protection for mooring and operating in the bay; it was not built as a tsunami protection barrier for Hilo. With many parks and trails closed due to pandemic, I decided to check this spot out since it is one of the places open. Its pretty cool local flavor.Black crabs and fishies can be spotted - many come here for fishing.Wear non-slippery shoes and watch out for the waves!

This was one of my favorite things that we did. Cool view, neat variety of fish, and a really unique experience overall. We went in the evening which felt more bearable than when we went during the day.

Great place for fishing. Local hangout. Make sure to bring a lot of water and sunscreen. There are no facilities at Breakwater, the nearest restrooms are 1/4 mile down the street at the next beach park. Wear shoes as the rocks can be slippery. Also always check the ocean conditions as the waves can be dangerous during the winter swells.
