I took two of my grandsons ages 4 and 6 out to Carpenters Bluff Bridge to do a little swimming while the gates were closed and the water was about knee high to me. Showing them a little bit of my childhood history. Where I spent a lot of my childhood swimming and fishing. They loved it! Sorry took no pic’s.

You can feel the history, but bridge is only open to pedestrian and bike traffic. There is a modern bridge about a 1/4 mile west, and we were looking forward to eating lunch at the Dock restaurant, but they dont open until 4pm, so found awesome lunch at Hucks in Denison.

Truly one of the most amazing star gazing experiences! Saw some orb things and what seemed to be possible interstellar aircraft as they zipped through the sky while changing directions. Definitely not planes, satellites, or space debris.

This place could be amazing, instead its trashy, there is broken glass everywhere and the road leading to the old bridge has become a dumping ground. Its probably one of the nastiest trashiest places along the Red. Would not recommend.

We had seen an edition of Texas Country Reporter, on Carpenters Bluff Bridge, that recommended driving across the Red River to Oklahoma before it was closed and the new bridge was opened. It has already been closed to thru traffic, but we took a walk across the bridge. Cold and windy day, but I got some photos of the area. Was worth the drive from Sherman to see a part of Texas history.

Sad to see such a historic bridge fall victim to vandalism. There is profanity/graffiti spray painted everywhere. I enjoyed walking across the bridge and back. Be careful of loose nails and rotting boards.

Love the beauty of this old iron bridge. Theres a spot to park on the Texas side complete with a historical marker. Once you walk onto the bridge you can see all the huge catfish below. Even though the water level was very low during my visit the water was still clear enough to see fish. There is some vulgar graffiti on some areas of the bridge. Many have decided to illegally dump their trash all around and under the bridge entrance which was so sad to me. Regardless, this bridge is really neat to see and experience in person.

The bridge truly is a historic landmark, and it pains me to see it in shambles. The road leading up to it is beginning to be overgrown be vegetation, and there is practically a trash dump site where at the north end of the bridge. There needs to be a caretaker, but I dont see that happening. Im just glad it is still allowed to stand.

They are building a new bridge to replace the old bridge. The old one lane car bridge has been tested and is sturdy, but the old wood pedestrian walkway needs work. It would be great to fix it up as a hike and bike bridge since it connects Texas and Oklahoma!!!! Keep the Carpenters Bluff Bridge.

Great place to visit if you like history. Walking across this bridge will take you back in time. One side was the original railway which was converted to accommodate automobiles once the railway was removed. The wooden section was the original automobile crossing which was added a few years after its construction. This crossing also used to be a toll crossing. This bridge holds a deep history of lawsuits and fights between Texas and Oklahoma over Oklahoma’s toll charges.

This is a really neat old bridge that you can park at the ends and walk across. The dam was only releasing the minimum so the water was low and crystal clear. We saw several huge catfish. Real nice destination for a road trip on a nice day. Highly recommend.

This landmark is a great stop just to take in a moment of history and a casual walk but is in need of a clean up in the area, with the new bridge so very close wouldnt think that this would be getting so run down quickly. Hope to hear that something comes through for, maybe send community service out and do some pickup and paint over from the vandals. Its not gone yet!

Note: Its only one lane, so be courteous. Watch for oncoming cars before proceeding onto the bridge, and use your headlamps to alert other drivers of your presence. Its an interesting 100-year-old truss bridge that spans the Red River at the town of Carpenters Bluff, TX. A historical marker stands on the Texas side of the bridge. Originally designed for rail traffic, the wooden wagon shelf is clearly out of service, and the rail bed was converted decades ago for car traffic (now concrete).Rumors abound of intentions to replace it. When I visited 08/03/16, there were numerous active bulldozers on the Oklahoma side, just north of the existing bridge. It appeared that brush was being cleared for a new roadway parallel to Carpenters Bluff Rd, and I also spotted a large, fresh dirt pile in the river, not to mention that all the brush along the river bank had been cleared for 100-200 yards. Again, only on the Oklahoma side, to the north of the bridge.Edit: As a piece of architecture and as a piece of history, I enjoyed the bridge tremendously, but as a bridge whose purpose is carrying traffic, one lane is not ideal; therefore, the three stars.
