We looked up some parks to visit and chose this one based on the pictures for shading while walking and a good sidewalk. When we got to the park there were a ton of homeless people laying around the park and the park itself looked rundown and trashy. We did not stay long at all.

This is the infamous park where, several years ago, during a stand-in turned violent, a young lady in the crowd was struck and killed as well as numerous others injured. The clash between the two groups was in part due to the statue of Robert E. Lee in the center of what was then Lee park. Many found it offensive and the headlines it received encouraged other groups across the south to lobby to have similar statues removed from college campuses and parks.

Beautiful and sunny day about 60 degrees. Nice view of downtown with a slope to the parks hill. Large tree on the corner likely several hundred years old, guessing by its 4-5-foot diameter. Worth a look, as is Charlottesvilles other parks well planned many years ago.

Always amazing events done here the tom tom festival was fantastic this week they do it twice a year thanks to the Sponsors we allHad a great time walking around in a historic park filled with much turmoil right now this is where the Robert E Lee statue is still there tarted as we fight for its freedom to stay where he belongs for the public to enjoy with pride and learn about history near where our forefathers planned things in the nearby court house this park and area has so much history. The courthouse at one time was a church on weekends one time. But go walk this park see its small but a quaint area to hold a music and events. The tom tom festival is twice a year there the spring one is much bigger and a week long. There are other events that have been held in peace in this park.

Its a nice park in the city center. Unfortunately there may be some shady characters around but I have never been bothered by any. Thankfully the tarp has been removed from the statue now. The only controversy about this park is caused by the boneheaded duality that is American politics.

It was a beautiful and safe park when I was at UVA back in the 80s. Now it has become a place to buy drugs, hang out with homeless, or drink beer from a can. When will Charlottesville learn that if you treat your own city like C rap than everyone else will too!

I went there in the hopes of having a better understanding of the madness that happened there. I didnt see any protesting going on but I did see several people who were diverse in ethnicity lounging about the park. They were sitting on the benches or just laying on the grass. Some of the folks were smoking pot and everyone seemed to be happy. My thought at that moment was apparently this statue is not that offensive after all. What is offensive is the people, on both sides, who stir up the hate that led to this fiasco. This did not have to happen and the people to blame is the local government as well as the governor at the time, Terry McAuliffe.

The idiots of Charlottesville now call this a park. Robert E. Lees statue has a bag over it. Homeless drunks were everywhere, and loud disrespectful students and persons were littered there. When I visited 10 years ago, it was a beautiful area, warm and welcoming, with lots of history to learn.

Review №36

The park is beautiful but unfortunately will always be an even worse part of history than in some peoples opinion of it already was. I remain neutral and love everyone but I will say that the statues are a part of our history that alot of people dont like. Then again there are statues in my home city of Richmond that are still standing and hope to continue to see more statues put up of historic Virginians. History is history. Its in the past and there is no gain erasing it. The real gain is learning from history and not making the same mistakes. Everyone has a different way they look at things and if we all agreed nobody would be different. Theres a difference in trying to make a difference but using the first amendment to schedule riots isnt the answer. This park should be renamed The Heather Heyer memorial park and have a statue of her in it now. Yes. The current statue is historic but I dont think he lived there and most likely never fired a bullet from that plot of land. It can be moved to a confederate site especially now that a woman gave her life for this park. I hope we all have a peaceful day and even more ahead. Always remember Heather.
