I was surprised to see The Ramble Cave labeled on a Google Map of Central Park because the cave doesnt really exist anymore-- its fenced off, the entrance is sealed with stones, and few people know about it.From the moment I read about the so-called Indian Cave a few years ago (in which a 15 year old runaway girl lived in for a month, in 1897) I was eager to see it, my dog and I have since visited it several times. If you like hard-to-find sealed-off caves with a romantic history, its a must-see. Otherwise, its a slightly-dangerous, rather pointlessexcursion over a fence, down a narrow stone staircase (dont hit your head on that overhanging boulder!) to a swampy hidden trash-strewn cove featuring a bricked-up cave entrance. But, its my idea of a good time.

The Ramble Cave is one of Central Parks original features. Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the parks designers, found a deposit of “rich mould” in a small bay on the north side of The Lake. The mould was carried away, revealing a narrow cavity, at water level on the lake-side and sloping uphill thirty feet or so to the north, meeting up with a planned path just to the east of the Ramble Arch. Several large rocks were set on top of the eastern wall with more stones set into the hill beside the north exit, giving the impression that they had slid down naturally.

It’s a secret steep scary staircase down to the depths of the sealed off cave!

No cave here anymore. Its covered up. The stone etched stairs was cool.

I like the steps. Yes, it is bricked off, but don’t diss our cave haters.
