The distinctive triangular shape of the Flatiron Building, built in 1902, allowed it to fill the wedge-shaped property located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Broadway. The building was intended to serve as offices. At 22 stories and 307 feet, the Flatiron was never the city’s tallest building, but always one of its most dramatic-looking, and its popularity with photographers and artists has made it an enduring symbol of New York for more than a century.

It was the last day of our short vacation in New York City, and for whatever reason, amongst all the other things that we had managed to see and do, this building always seemed to elude us! So we made the special trip to see it, even although it was a horrid day with a mixture of snow, sleet and rain!Having seen photographs, and even a jigsaw puzzle of the Flatiron, it was great just to see this very unusual and unique building up close with our own eyes.Traveler21imti

I love this part of Manhattan and the Flatiron Building is certainly a landmark and classic building in the area. This iconic triangular shape building, resembling a cast-iron clothes iron and hence from which it gets its name, has been used in many movies, series, television commercials and documentaries including Godzilla, the Spider-Man trilogy and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series. With Broadway on one side, 5th Avenue on the other, and Madison Square and the park in front of it, its in a great location and a must see when youre in New York City.

The distinctive triangular shape of the Flatiron Building, designed by Chicago architect Daniel Burnham and built in 1902, allowed it to fill the wedge-shaped property located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Broadway. The building was intended to serve as offices for the George A. Fuller Company, a major Chicago contracting firm. At 22 stories and 307 feet, the Flatiron was never the city’s tallest building, but always one of its most dramatic-looking, and its popularity with photographers and artists has made it an enduring symbol of New York for more than a century.Plans for ConstructionThough the Flatiron Building is often said to have gotten its famous name from its similarity to a certain household appliance, the triangular region contained by Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and 22nd and 23rd Streets had in fact been known as the “Flat Iron” prior to the building’s construction. The brothers Samuel and Mott Newhouse, who made their fortune in the mines of the West, bought the property in 1899. At the time, efforts were being made to create a new business district in New York, north of the current hub of Wall Street. In 1901, the Newhouses joined a syndicate led by Harry S. Black, head of the George A. Fuller Company, and filed plans to build a 20-story building on the triangular plot. The Flatiron Building would not be the tallest building in the city–the 29-story, 391-foot Park Row Building that had gone up in 1899 already held that spot. But its design by Daniel Burnham, a member of the prominent Chicago School of architecture, would make it one of the most unusual looking of the steel-framed skyscrapers being constructed at the time. (The first of these was the Home Insurance Building in Chicago, which had been completed in 1885.) Whereas many of the new tall buildings featured high towers emerging from heavy, block-like bases, Burnham’s tower soared directly up from street level, making an immediate and striking contrast against the lower buildings surrounding it.

This is a triangular 22-story,285-foot (86.9 m) tall steel-framed landmarked building located at 175 Fifth Avenue in the Flatiron District neighborhood of borough of Manhattan, New York City. Upon completion in 1902, it was one of the tallest buildings in the city at 20 floors high and one of only two skyscrapers north of 14th Street – the other being the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower, one block east. The building sits on a triangular block formed by Fifth Avenue, Broadway, and East 22nd Street – where the buildings 87-foot (27 m) back end is located – with East 23rd Street grazing the triangles northern (uptown) peak.

The Flatiron Building was designed by Chicagos Daniel Burnham as a vertical Renaissance palazzo with Beaux-Arts styling.[53][54] Unlike New Yorks early skyscrapers, which took the form of towers arising from a lower, blockier mass, such as the contemporary Singer Building (built 1902–08), the Flatiron Building epitomizes the Chicago school conception:[D] like a classical Greek column, its facade – limestone at the bottom changing to glazed terra-cotta from the Atlantic Terra Cotta Company in Tottenville, Staten Island as the floors rise[48][55] – is divided into a base, shaft, and capital.Early sketches by Daniel Burnham show a design with an (unexecuted) clockface and a far more elaborate crown than in the actual building. Though Burnham maintained overall control of the design process, he was not directly connected with the details of the structure as built. That task was performed by his designer Frederick P. Dinkelberg, a Pennsylvania-born architect in Burnhams office, who first worked for Burnham in putting together the 1893 Worlds Columbian Exposition in Chicago, for which Burnham was the chief of construction and master designer.[E] Working drawings for the Flatiron Building, however, remain to be located, though renderings were published at the time of construction in American Architect and Architectural Record.[56]Steel skeletonBuilding the Flatiron was made feasible by a change to New York Citys building codes in 1892, which eliminated the requirement that masonry be used for fireproofing considerations. This opened the way for steel-skeleton construction.[8] Since it employed a steel skeleton[F] – with the steel coming from the American Bridge Company in Pennsylvania[57] – it could be built to 22 stories (285 feet) relatively easily, which would have been difficult using other construction methods of that time.[58] It was a technique familiar to the Fuller Company, a contracting firm with considerable expertise in building such tall structures. At the vertex, the triangular tower is only 6.5 feet (2 m) wide; viewed from above, this pointed end of the structure describes an acute angle of about 25 degrees.[59]
