I love architecture, history and nature, so to get a combination of these three at Bethesda means I cant give it anything less than a 5 star review. Dont get me wrong, looking closely you can always find fault, like the crowds, possible stench depending on where the wind is blowing. But Im a romantic and I choose to bypass all that. Besides, depending on the hour of the day you go, youll get a different musician playing or singing New York, New York or some other Frank Sinatra and it just seals the deal in this romantic experience youll have when you visit Bethesda.

If you are coming from east manhattan the entrance at 76th street is the closest to Bethesda terrace it’s on a small lakeside and has a decent sized fountain! A gorgeous terrace by the prolific duo of Vaux and Mould, who created several masterpieces in Central Park, such as the Bow bridge nearby, and the Belvedere Castle, it has beautiful tile work and lovely acoustics whether its birds chirping in the eaves, or the strains of guitar from Carlos, a permanent fixture and a well known busker as seen in the attached photo I took in early April 2020, who plays right at the entrance to the terrace overlooking the namesake fountain with its Angel of the Water centerpiece. The terrace offers spectacular backdrops for wedding, modelling and other photo shoots, and should definitely be on the list of places to visit in this spectacular Park.

This famous fountain inside Central Park has been featured in many films like Home Alone, Angels in America, and most recently, John Wick. The Bethesda fountain is only functional during the summer months and gets emptied as soon as the weather starts getting cold. During the summer, the fountain is usually populated with kids running in the fountain to get cooled off. There is a very good view of The Lake and the Loeb Boathouse from the northern end of the fountain.

There are hundreds of things to do and see in Central Park, but Bathesda Terrace and Fountain are two essentials, predominantly because they are so recognizable and an essential part of the park. They are very centrally located, so from here you can go to the boathouse for lunch or boat rentals, to the Met, to the Natural History Museum, or to other locations within Central Park.Another key feature is that they have public bathrooms available for use here. It does get quite crowded during peak hours with tourists, street musicians, and other performers, so if you are looking to take pictures here, I would recommend early in the morning or in the evening on an overcast day when the terrace is lit up.

Too much showtime here. The amount of live shows going on appeal to a lot of tourists but, IMO, it negatively impacts the originally intended vibe of the fountain. Potential to be super serene if they allow only one show at a time (to eliminate mixed noise) or have designated times of day where shows can take place. Cool for tourists. (maybe?)
