Dear Rabbi,I want to thank you for the most enjoyable services I have attended since I was a child and young married in Minneapolis many many years ago. I especially LOVED your sermon on What Does a Jew Look Like. I have often thought that same question, especially when people look at my children and say they dont look Jewish! (both of whom are white American born. but were adopted by us as infants). Your sermon was very special and I just wanted to say thank you.

It felt so intimate to view your Yom Kippur services on line and at Central, rather than the cavernous Lincoln Center.I was more able to meditate and think deeply.I also found the dancing quite interesting.Congratulations, Rabbi Buchdahl and all, for trying new things. So many of them worked. To Your Best Future, Faith Popcorn

I just love the architecture of this building. It puts a smile on my face each time I pass it. It was built between 1870 and 1872 in the Moorish Revival style. It was supposed to be a copy of the Dohany Street Synagogue in Budapest, Hungary.

A great place to pray. Super warm and friendly with a Moroccan vibe. Very liberal and could live without the political agenda sometimes, but i love that they stream their services and when in person, it is such a wonderful experience with the music and variations of instruments. The rabbis are fantastic and i look forward to their shabbos services when in town.

Incredible! Gorgeous building, friendly members amazing music and teaching! It was nice to visit while away from home. I had streamed services once when I was sick and couldn’t make it to shul on Shabbat, so when I found out my hotel was a few blocks away, I knew where I had to be.

We live in Los Angeles and ever since a few months ago have been watching this synagogues Friday night services on TV and have been amazed so far! We love the rabbis and the cantors and the way the conduct the services, mostly in song and uplifting speeches. This is true Judaism for me! I think if anyone would like to find out what Judaism is about or reasons to be a proud Jew they should attend or watch the services here!We also love their intern cantor, Shani Ben Or. She has an angelic voice and a couple of weeks ago we were delighted to hear sing the prayers with such energy and spirituality. We would love to attend the services when we are in NY next time!Thank you and many blessings.

Just before the time of the prayer, I asked the rabbi to say my sons name and he did it. Thank you. Just one word: the architecture is very beautiful. Inside and outside. Ill be back

I am morally obligated to write this review. I am a Muslim and today i prayed inside the Synagogue. Our Mosque across the street was closed due to fire. When we had no place to worship, Synagogue opened the door for us, and hundreds of Muslims completed their Friday prayer. Special thanks to Rabbi and every member of the Synagogue.

Magnificent building, beautiful service! I come from the oldest reform temple west of the Mississippi River . I was just wondering.....I thought our Temple was about as reformed as one could get, but yet, the Rabbi and Cantor wear a Yalmalka as do those reading from the Torah. (Along with a Tallis) More and more people now wear yalmakas too and some a Tallis. Yes we are still Reformed Jews, but tending to hold on to traditional too. Maybe it’s just a New York thing.Just respectfully wondering.

The Central Synagogue (Congregation Ahavath Chesed) is located at 652 Lexington Avenue on the corner of E 55th Street, Manhattan, New York City, New York. It was built in 1872 in the Moorish Revival style as a copy of Budapests Dohány Street Synagogue.[5] It has been in continuous use by a congregation longer than any other in the city.[6][7] The building was designed by Henry Fernbach. The dramatic style of the building was the subject of much debate during the construction. Some felt its excess would inspire envy and stand in the way of assimilation.[8]It is among the oldest synagogue buildings still standing in the United States.[9] It was designated a National Historic Landmark on May 15, 1975.[3][6] On Wednesdays at 12:45 p.m. a docent conducts a free tour, which begins at the front entrance. The building was restored by 2001 in the original style after an accidental fire in August 1998.[10] The roof and its supports were destroyed as a result of the fire. During this fire, the firefighters sensitivity for the building saved all but the central pane in the rose window that dominates the eastern (Lexington Avenue) wall. The marble plaques on the north wall of the foyer honor the firefighters of the 8th Battalion of the New York City Fire Department.
