The Whitney is focused on American art primarily of the last hundred years. There is a permanent collection on one floor and special exhibits are on the other floors. This is the first museum I visited in New York City since the beginning of the pandemic in March. They were very well organized with tickets to enter at certain times. The bathrooms were really spotless and didnt seem like much of a risk to use. The elevators were marked with places where people should stand. Rather than having people pushing buttons for the elevators one of the museum guards would call for the elevator to come to a certain floor thereby avoiding everyone pushing the elevator button over and over again and giving each other their germs. There were many beautiful pieces of art of course. I skipped the Lichtenstein geometry pieces. My wife greatly enjoyed the colors and varieties in the exhibit on crafts. The exhibit of Mexican muralists and their contemporaries was excellent and they have a number of murals by Thomas Hart Benton who is one of my favorites. Patrons were all in masks and keeping appropriate distance

I paid a recent visit to the Museum and enjoyed the experience. It was busy but not overly crowded and there was plenty of space for everyone. The exhibitions were really interesting and it turned out to be a great idea for a Saturday afternoon. And its close proximity to the Highline, train and Meatpacking District places to eat are all bonuses. And if you go, the outdoor roof view is a must. Ill definitely be back.

The Whitney, in its excellent new location, was a delight to visit. They are doing a great job making it safe and I felt very comfortable. The Vida Americana exhibition is not to be missed and is deeply enriched with videos and lectures on the Whitneys website. I have been so impressed by the Whitneys response to the pandemic (with online access to its collections while closed and a wonderful free lecture series called Art History from Home delivered by their Fellows, a group of dynamic young scholars) that I bought a dual membership. I felt very fortunate to visit in person. Get there while you can and luxuriate in the outstanding curatorial vision and roomy surroundings.

Beautiful exterior design, with many different exhibits to be seen. Honestly, I would visit Whitney again just to enjoy the rooftop view, bc it was simply breathtaking during sunset (and it was free). The exhibits were interesting since it revolves mostly around American arts (Native American art, pop art, etc). The 8th floor is reserved for special exhibit, so I imagine it changes time to time.

How to plan the perfect day in 2020:Step 1 - Book reservations for The Whitney. Spend 2-3 hours here and see Vida Americana. WOW.Step 2 - Book reservations for The High Line following your visit. (FREE). Plan to walk and enjoy The High Line for about an hour. Be sure to look up around 20th St to get a good glimpse of The Edge. During my visit, I watched 2 helicopters capture THe Weekends VMA performance. WILD. Follow the path and exit at the Vessel on 30th.Step 3 - Book a reservation to The Vessel (FREE). Climb to the top and enjoy the majesty of our city.

Visiting the relatively new Whitney (its been in its original location in the meatpacking district for a few years now) provides you with a comprehensive overview of American art. I particularly like the vast permanent collection with highlights from every period of American art. Check out the gallery with George Tooker’s moody painting ”Subway.” Every straphanger will relate. Also, Jay Defeo’s ”The Rose” — a bulging work of layered paint and mesh that the artist created over many years resembles something like a cross between an altarpiece and a flower blooming. When I visited, there was a cool exhibit on street photography produced by the Kamoinge group. And I loved loved loved the installation ”Kitchen” by Liza Lou. And theres an incredible exhibition on the intersection between art in the United States and Mexico. Check out how the curators position Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo together. Also — tickets should be purchased in advance. Expect to wear a mask and get your temperature checked. There are no crowds. And you feel like you have space to yourself — that is, until restrictions eventually lift and tourists return (pending a vaccine or a miracle). One weird outcome of the pandemic is that New Yorkers can reclaim their cultural institutions. So get it while you can (but still uphold safety precautions and physical distancing).

I am glad to be back after several months of not being able to do. Very interesting and good exhibits as usual, and depending on your fancy, you will enjoy yourself here. I didnt try using the elevators though, so my friend and I had to use the stairs to access the floors where the various exhibits are located. Some of them have been there before the pandemic, but there are plenty of new items displayed in this recent visit I made.

Love this museum! They have a good collection of different artists and usually have very cool exhibits. I’ve seen Pollock and Diego Rivera as special exhibits and they’ve been great. Even if you’re not into modern art, it is very welcoming for anyone who wants to see some art and have a good, relaxing time. They have a cafe and some outdoor balconies. Very spacious so you have a very comfortable experience even when there are a lot of people, they keep a control of how many people are let in at a time.

The Whitney Museum of American Art just reopened in time for Labor Day weekend with appropriate social distancing measures. To limit the number of people visiting the museum, they are currently requiring everyone to reserve their tickets for specific dates and time slots, but they are offering Pay-As-You-Wish admissions until September 28 so definitely take advantage of this opportunity if you’ve never been. The employees here were really helpful and did a great job of making us feel safe during our visit. Masks are required and hand sanitizers are placed everywhere. Wear comfortable shoes though because you’ll be walking up at least eight flights of stairs since they are trying to limit the use of elevators to those who actually need them. It was a great workout for us though because we had gotten some gelatos before coming here. The artwork itself isn’t the most exciting, but the building is an architectural masterpiece by the Italian architect and winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize Renzo Piano. Definitely check the weather before booking your tickets because you’ll want to be able to go to their outdoor deck for the amazing view!

Excellent permanent collection, as well as temporary exhibits. The Agnes Pelton exhibit should not be missed. The ability to walk outside between floors is a lovely way to connect to, and enjoy the surrounding neighborhood. Something many museums don’t offer.A lower score because I overheard security staff on duty the day I visited loudly disparaging visitors and office staff in two separate instances. No comment on if the comments were justified - it was just highly unprofessional to be airing laundry in front of visitors.

When the Whitney Museum of American Art moved from Madison Avenue on the Upper Eastside to its new building near the Hudson River in what was once known as the Meat Packing District, at 99 Gansevoort Street, many people were skeptical that this was a wise move. It turned out to be a brilliant one! The museum vastly increased its exhibition space and is now located at the beginning ( or end) of The High Line, New York’s elevated park. The Whitney’s building is considered by many to be a work of Art! They have a wonderful restaurant on their top floor that overlooks the skyline and whether you are going to enjoy the paintings and exhibits or just looking for a great place to spend time in a beautiful space, it will be well worth it.

The Whitney is well worth the $25 price of admission. For those seeking a survey of modern art, you can’t do much better than starting at the top floor and heading down the elevator. This will give you (as of August 2019) a chronological tour of modern art.The Hopper collection is fantastic, as are all of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s pieces. The contemporary stuff is more hit or miss, as expected. They do a good job highlighting the most interesting artists working today, and some will be a bit... challenging for some observers. In sum, you can’t visit Chelsea without a trip to the Whitney. You’ll be delighted, or, at worst, it will challenge your perceptions.

Immediately upon arrival, the Whitney delights with its location right by the Hudson River. The building is a striking sculptural masterpiece in itself. The lobby is airy and gives a taste of the architectural and artistic tour ahead. Do take the elevator up to the 6th floor, and start your visit with experiencing the almost 360 views from the terrace off the café. On a clear day, one can see a swath of New York Harbor with the Statue of Liberty in the far distance. The views over the High Line are breathtaking, too. The exhibitions are changing throughout the year, and are usually focused on modern-day American artists and art movements. Also, the Youth Programs are excellent. Do visit.

Its permanent collection comprises more than 23,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, films, videos, and artifacts of new media by more than 3,400 artists. It places particular emphasis on exhibiting the work of living artists as well as maintaining an extensive permanent collection of important pieces from the first half of the last century. The museums Annual and Biennial exhibitions have long been a venue for younger and lesser-known artists whose work is showcased there. The atmosphere was relaxing and inviting.
