Really enjoyed this with artistic and thought provoking exhibits on three levels. Some but not all items make strong social commentary that should make one reflect. They told us they will close in 10 days for over a year to knock down and rebuild a larger museum facility on the same plot.

I enjoyed the exhibit although it is small. It focused on african and spanish art in various media formats. I enjoyed... because it gave me a sense of NYC hip hop culture, 80s...and was thought provoking on various topics. The gift shop is an area that can be improved. They did not have some of the key exhibitors latest works (books) available. I highly recommend if you are the area... nominal fee/ donation accepted and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

The Studio Museum in Harlem generally offers a fascinating multiplex perspective on African and African American life for those who are open to it. We didnt get to see much, as the exhibits are being packed for moving out of the building, which is going to be torn down; a new, gorgeous building is planned, and we look forward to seeing it in the future! For people considering visiting this museum, check the website for information, as exhibits will be available in nearby locations beginning in May 2018. The museum store alone is well worth a visit! It and the small amount we were able to see let us know this is a fabulous museum to which we will plan another visit. As for the perspective that the museum is located in a dangerous neighborhood shared by one reviewer; I disagree. That comment is incorrect, and, frankly, it sounds racist. We walked all over that neighborhood completely safely, going first to the museum, then to Best Market Harlem, and then to Lee Lees Bakery. We were never bothered--and Ill bet that other reviewer was never bothered, either. My husband and I were struck by how alive Harlem feels--a wonderful energy and spirit permeates the entire area. Go with an open mind--you wont regret it!

Got here by accident after hours on their last day before a three year hiatus for a major renovation. Turned out there was a party and we ended up dancing to funky music, drinking beer and having a good time, really off the tourist beaten track. Everyone was super friendly and inviting. Hope the renovation goes well and we can come back in three years and see it. Good luck!

Thoroughly enjoyed the place. The art was great and very much so appreciated. The gift shop was nice gifts - got a shirt and bracelet as a gift. The employees werent as friendly as I would have preferred - a bit unnecessarily snappy but nothing too crazy. Overall I enjoyed the experience and would definitely recommend it.

I attended a fashion and visual performance here for Harlem Fashion Week and what a superb show, but I didnt expect anything less. A close friend of mine was one of the models so I was lucky enough to be on the guest list, which was the only way to enter this night. The event was extremely well curated with compelling visual imagery throughout all rooms. The models stood in other rooms and painfully posed steady for hours. It was amazing. I hope to attend a show there again soon.

Very disappointed. We arrived 13 minutes before closing ,due to subway delays, and the front desk guard sent us away and stated they were closed. I do not appreciate businesses having confirmed business hours advertised on the web yet don’t honor it. As small black business owners we have got to do better. Even after we stated we came all the way from Queens just to see the museum, we were responsed with a shoulder shrug and a insincere apology. The museum is not big and would take less than 10 minutes to view. The staff was very unreasonable.

I was born in Harlem should I used to lay down on the ground and pick dimes and pennies and quarters out of the railroad grades. Me me and my brother used to shine shoes in front of the Apollo and the Coco cabana on 125th street back in the day back in the late fifties and sixties and still love my home

Ever since I was a lil dude Ive loved this place. It is THE staple of Harlem, the home of African-American creative visual culture. Sure, art galleries are popping up left and right in Harlem now, but The Studio Museum was here first and itll be here when these johnny-come-lately places all start to die off. Far from pretentious, its a place where the history of Harlem hangs out, from Romare Bearden to the artist that you dont even know about who is changing perceptions with their creative strokes, this is THE place. Just like ya boy Pumkin Escobar, its in Harlem. Come here, getchu some culture. Youll be glad you did.
