This place is surely a Mecca of design studies. Though a major part of the museum is under renovation, the other part still offers an interesting view into the design world. The collection of graphic designs by Herbert Bayer provides an intriguing take on the propaganda designs used during World War II. The graphic and interactive design studio where you can make your own design, is one of my favorite places in the museum. Our team created quite some interesting designs and they were reflected on the gigantic screens on the wall. This museum is a surely a place of visit for design students.

Best museum Ive ever been. No boring old stuff, just pure interactive science. The fee is $18 and its totally worth it. I have a Smithsonian magazine subscription and it makes me a member, so I got 2 tickets for free :) If youre a member dont forget your membership card. And if you like learning new stuff, consider arrive several hours before closing, I was really upset when the time was out and there was plenty of awesome things to know left.

Since Ive been to many of the New York Citys more well known museums multiple times, I finally made it to the Cooper Hewitt. I was very impressed at both the museum and the exhibitions that were going on there at the time. The staff was very friendly and the iPod tours were very useful in enhancing the experience. I definitely recommend this place, especially to veterans who have already been to some of the other NYC museums.

This museum is the leading design museum in New York and one of the leading ones Im the world . Its housed in a old mansion. However its well worth the charge and a great museum.

AMAZING museum. In a beautiful building too. I asked a guard about the history of the building, and he spent about 20 minutes telling me everything. His name was Garfield and he was awesome! The exhibits are so creative and exciting. My favorite was the sensory one on the top floor. You can pet a furry wall that makes orchestra sounds, smell a bunch of scents meant to involve memories, and tons more. I also liked the exhibit on devices to assist handicapped people. My favorite device was a computer you can control by looking at different parts of a screen! The building is formerly the mansion of Andrew Carnegie and its beautiful. There is a gift shop with really interesting items in every price range (I got some little handmade wooden tops for $7 each). There is also a cafe with sandwiches, coffee, and pastries. Outside is a gorgeous sitting area with tables, benches, and a green lawn. Theres a sign posted saying anyone can enjoy this space, even if you arent going to the museum.Google maps instructed me to enter through the back garden, but the museum entrance is actually around the other side of the building.

This year the exhibitions were Paisley on the 2nd floor and the other what goes into creating bioengineered products these are items made from algae, seaweed, etc. etc. Also on display was a marker that used captured carbon to create ink and limited edition ADIDAS made from what I believe is fish netting and recycled plastics. I like the fact that people out there are making strides towards reduce our waste production. The exhibitions were informational without boring you to death. This is useful for people with various learning styles.I like the pen they give you so that you can save things along the way. Very useful for going over later on.Floor 2 has things about colour and types of staircases.Floor 1 is very interesting. Typing or turning on lights with your eye is very useful to differently abled people. I like the technology being developed in that exhibit. The basement is a fun floor to try out the spinning chairs and see creative ideas from students. You learn about design in a fun way. I cant say enough nice things about this place. The setting is grand, the Andrew Carnegie mansion. Beautifully done displays of their collections and changing exhibits. It is relevant to humans who use artifacts, and to our time, and stimulates intellect and emotions in ways some art spaces might not. And it is a Smithsonian museum.I enjoyed my too short time at this museum by looking at exhibits of objects to accommodate people with disability. I have heard it said that if we live long enough, most of us will have some disability. There were several items that while essential for some among us, could be of service to almost all people. While not quite an Ironman suit, the exhibit that featured wearable strength with actuators to assist in during sitting and standing up, looked like they could help give back some of what time takes away. The voting booth also had some great innovations to help insure that at least in voting, everyone is created equal and has every opportunity to stay that way.Other exhibits about rules for good design, and examples of great design were cool and informative, worth posting in a workplace or sharing among colleagues or family when making choices on how to have the best, most efficient and effective equipment. They had some very cool stuff about perception and senses in another exhibit. And about color. Wow! Life can get pretty beige, so being treated to examples of the human created world being as daring as the natural world was a thrill. They had a cool exhibit called the immersion room that could change the wallpaper.I disagreed with some choices, but appreciated the approach in an exhibit that created computer visualizations from symphonic music. I think they had a great presentation for the jaggedness of some contemporary pieces, but needed more organic and sensual presentation for impressionists. But as an example of imagination at work, A+.This museum is a quality experience, my only regret is I didnt have enough time.

Had a super interesting visit to the Cooper Hewitt today! I’m normally not the type to get into museums, but the future of urban mobility exhibit really sparked my interest (especially as a New Yorker). I actually read all the descriptions of objects for one, which again is a big step for me, and honestly learned a lot about emerging technologies. The other exhibits were all great as well — definitely a very interactive museum for all ages!

An absolutely fabulous museum experience. I was highly impressed by every space, and stayed far longer than I had planned. The curation is superb. The juxtaposition between objects—old and new, organic and rigid, natural and manipulated—is sensible and unforced. Its more child friendly than many other museums, as there are interactive exhibits and some things visitors are encouraged to touch. However, there are some very enticing things that may not be touched, so young children (and I noticed some adults, too) need to be monitored if they cant tell the difference.

Such a fun museum - it really strikes a balance between being informational, having a bunch of interesting and intriguing exhibits, and adding an element of entertainment to the whole experience! I loved being able to record pieces of art that I loved to revisit later with a special pen they provide upon entry and experimenting with designing my own buildings and furniture. I would recommend this to adults and children alike, as I believe their exhibits are truly friendly for both. Its also not too much to take in, and a nice change from places like the Met or the Natural History museum that truly take an entire day (if not two or three!) to properly explore.

I particularly enjoyed the Bauhaus exhibit (temporary) and the sustainability and new materials exhibit (more permanent). They also have pens that can electronically tag things you like to view them online later. Its an innovative idea, and I didnt feel any need to pull out my phone to take pictures of interesting things, which is great. The ticket price seemed fair. Im only giving the Cooper Hewitt four stars because the 3rd floor was closed when I visited. However Im sure when all floors are open it will deserve the five star rating many people have already given it. By the way, the Cooper Hewitt seems to be the only museum using non-reflective glass for its displays. I wish more museums and galleries did the same.A previous reviewer complained about the Café at the Museum. Unfortunately the cafe is far too small for the Museum, and the three staffers, while doing their best to meet demand, were clearly struggling with the workload while I was there. Finally, because the third floor was closed when I visited, the Museum had reduced the adult entry price to just $5. Nice one, folks :-)

As an industrial designer, its always fascinating to see what museums do with designed objects. How they interpret them for the visitors, and how the curated collections are displayed to tell a story. The cooper-hewitt absolutely knocks it out of the park. From the seamless way to remember items from your trip by touching a stylus to an RFID tag next to the object to the incredible interactive screen tables that allow you to explore more than the physical collection on display, its doing technology right without hitting you over the head with it.Andrew Carnegies unbelievable mansion is the backdrop for this adventure, the rooms themselves steal the show a lot of the time. Featuring absolutely unbelievable carved mantle pieces, Tiffany lamps, beautiful murals, the mansion has been carefully altered to make it more museum like, and it works very very well. The nature inspired exhibit I visited filled the entire museum, which is a fascinating approach to doing a medium sized museum like the C-H. Everything was of exceptionally high execution, very inspiring from a designers point of view. The staff was also very enthusiastic about the museum, I had a long conversation about AI with a very kind staff member, and yet another was once a designer themselves! So it adds a remarkable richness to the experience walking through.I cannot wait to return and see whatever they come up with next to display inside.
