The Central Park Mall is a pedestrian esplanade in Central Park, in Manhattan, New York City. The mall, leading to Bethesda Fountain, provides the only purely formal feature in the naturalistic original plan of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux for Central Park. The Mall was designed so that a carriage could disgorge its passengers at the south end, then drive round and pick them up again overlooking Bethesda Terrace, whose view of the Lake and Ramble formed the ultimatum of interest in Olmsted and Vauxs vision. With no need for redoubling their steps, fashionable New Yorkers, who in the first decades of the parks existence drove through it in their carriages but rarely walked in it, had their chance to mingle with the less affluent, a mix that was considered thoroughly American and picturesque enough to be illustrated repeatedly in the watercolors of Maurice Prendergast and Ludwig Bemelmans.
A gorgeous part of Central Park, one of my favorite areas to walk in the park!!
Beautiful place to walk through the park especially now that leaf’s color are changing!
Central park is a beautiful place to enjoy
Love this place during the fall and spring
Walked down here during the visit and John Wick and Home alone 2 was in my mind. Also a great spot to watch the new years eve fireworks display. Great place to also chill out after walking miles around the city to take in the views and listen to some wildlife.
Amazing place with live performers
The Mall (Literary Walk) is a shaded pedestrian avenue between 66th and 72nd street that is a nice area to spend time in visiting Central Park in NYC.Here you find a straight avenue lined with monuments of mostly of prominent poets and writers such as Fitz-Greene Halleck, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns and William Shakespeare. Youll also fin a statue of Christopher Columbus status as well as a handful of other monuments in the area and near the end of the Mall. These are nice for those who enjoy monument viewing during their travels. There is a nice flowerbed (beautiful in Spring) at the south end of the The Mall, which is lined with rows of American Elm trees, creating a canopy of shade. Benches line the pedestrian avenue as well, providing opportunity to take a seat, rest your feet and enjoy the scenery. Art dealers and souvenir stands are usually open and a busker or two can usually be seen and heard in the area as well.
Great place to buzz around in.
As we entered the park we obtained a map and advice as to what to see and where to walk from the information booth and set off to explore. Along the way we found various statues and at the start of Literary Walk immediately recognised a tribute to Shakespeare in his traditional attire to the side of the path. In practice just one of several statues to well know people of the literary world. To compliment a walk along the path numerous artists were selling their works adding colour, interest and atmosphere to our stroll, with the occasional squirrel scurrying around. What a lovely place for a walk, to relax and take in nature, in the middle of a busy city.
Lining the elegant path is North America’s largest remaining stand of American Elms, whose interlocking branches create a stained-glass effect in sunlight. While many doubted that people of different races, religions, ethnicities, and socio-economic groups would commingle in a public space, magnetic gathering spots like the Mall proved them wrong.
Really great walk that we wish we had more time to enjoy. Should be great to experience in the summer as it was in the winter when we went.
This place is amazing. If you’re going to visit New York City you definitely have to come here. It’s famous and has been in numerous TV shows and movies.
Its a nice spacious place to stroll or rest on a bench, with food carts around. No explanation was visible about what is the Literary theme of this area.
I love this place!!!
Open and relaxing place to walk around. Many different cultural groups were playing music at the park. Fun!
Breathtaking. So much better in person. If you have the chance yo see anything in the manhattan area go here.
Scenic.
Central Park is the spot I love most in New York city. It is the most vibrant, full of music, dance and families and friends. This is the park for everyone, rich and poor! There are so many little spots, each with its own characters and charms. I never get tired walking in Central Park.
One of the most scenic spots in all of Central Park because of the trees that line both sides of the place. Very pretty in the fall with all the bright colors and on snow days.As you walk around, you might encounter portrait sketchers and fridge magnet sellers. As much as I’d like to support the latter, the quality of their product is not very good so better to look elsewhere if you’re not in a hurry to buy souvenirs.
Kindaa heaven for all artists...
It was a. Beautiful, sunny, winters day - delightful to stroll here
Crowded, but very beautiful. Highly suggest during fall time
Beautiful park. Lovely buildings. Love this park year round.
Lovely
Fantastic place in Central Park. A good place to sit and read. Busy at times and host to the bandstand. Enjoy the statues and the old-age look of the fountain at the end of the mall. We were there on a brilliant Spring day.
Came during February the trees weren’t as full but it was nice
Beautiful wide walkway among the trees and these statue.
Lots of vendors and lots of people playing instruments or having little shows. Great place to meet up with friends.
Almost always full of people and theres seating along all of the paths. It looks so great all year round. At the South end of the main path theres a beautiful big circle full of different plants.
Extraordinary, romantic and quiet place. Amazing.
Breathtaking, no matter the time of year, nor the weather! Saw tonnes of little squirrels too!
Beautiful walk down the promenade under American elms canape
Nice place to hang out...
Whatever the season a great spot for a steady walk, sit and relax and enjoy the view
A must-visit when in the city, entertainment on the weekends, quiet walks through the week.
One of the best places in town
A must go for everyone. Great talent lurks in the halls.
Just a beautiful spot.
Omg place
Lovely walk amid beautiful trees.
Pretty cool
Beautiful!

Great
Lovely place to walk
Classic ny spot.
Awesome
Beautiful
An Iconic walk.
Another lovely part of the park. It is a wide, tree-lined walk with the statues of famous writers spaced along it. Writers include Shakespeare, Robert Burns and Walter Scott. A recent addition is a statue of three womens rights pioneers, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The trees are some of the few American Elms still standing. Dutch Elm disease has wiped out most.
