Amazing bridge. Ir you like bridges, this should be on your list. It is the older sister to the Sydney Harbor bridge you see during the fireworks. Best views are from Randalls Island.

Hell Gate Bridge made it possible for my train to go from Queens to Randalls Island. Could not be happier with the manner in which it got us there plus its a looker. I know this is better appreciated from the ground because I have ridden my bike under it as well. The one thing that could use some improvement is that its not clear at all which end is the actual gate into hell. Whether this is the Queens side or the Randalls side, I cant figure out. A clarifying sign would be appreciated, and I hope management will take this under consideration. I did not have this problem on the Spuyten Duyvil Bridge, which is clearly a better run bridge.

Such an amazing view with the breeze from the river and view of Manhattan on the left side. The best view of the bridge is from Astoria Park. This bridge hold a train line, if you view the bridge from the Astoria Park other side of the river will be Randall island (which basically have a playground and couple of ship docking area)Behind the bridge you will see John F Kennedy bridge or Tri-borough bridge

Did not take me to hell. Instead I was conveyed to Boston on a bridge that inspired the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Also featured this nice view of Manhattan. Highly recommend, I would do business with them again.

Ironic to be named Hells gate, especially 1 month before the titanic disaster (Which was headed for new york, btw).

The usual bridge. There is nothing special about him. There are very big traffic jams on it, which can take a very long time.

Somehow I find this bridge and the surrounding park really great. Would love to go on-top of it, sadly cant. But views from the Kennedy Bridge and from the park underneath on Randalls Island are great.

Construction of the Hell Gate Bridge began on March 1, 1912 and ended on September 30, 1916. It was the worlds longest steel arch bridge until the Bayonne Bridge was opened in 1931, and was surpassed again by the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932.In 1996 the bridge received a facelift, including its first comprehensive paint job in 80 years. It was painted Hell Gate Red, a dark, natural red. The bridge would be the last New York City bridge to collapse if humans disappeared, taking at least a millennium to do so, according to the February 2005 issue of Discover magazine. Most other bridges would fall in about 300 years.[6]

For years, Ive driven in and out of Brooklyn via the RFK bridge, and have always been fascinated with the beautiful, mysterious red bridge I could see from it. Finally, I looked it up and was delighted by the Wikipedia entry on Hell Gate Bridge. I wish more bridges showed this level of beauty.

The Hell Gate Bridge (originally the New York Connecting Railroad Bridge[1] or The East River Arch Bridge[2]) is a 1,017-foot (310 m)[3] steel through arch railroad bridge between Astoria in the borough of Queens, Randalls/Wards Island (which are now joined into one island and are politically part of Manhattan), and The Bronx in New York City, over a portion of the East River known as Hell Gate. The Hell Gate Bridge runs parallel to the Queens span of the RFK-Triborough Bridge, which connects Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan, and drivers can see the length of the bridge east of the roadway. The great arch bridge is the largest of three bridges that (along with more than 17,000 feet (3.2 mi; 5.2 km) long of approach spans and viaducts) form the Hell Gate complex. An inverted bowstring truss bridge with four 300-foot (91.4 m) spans crosses the Little Hell Gate (now filled in); and a 350-foot (106.7 m) fixed truss bridge crosses the Bronx Kill (now narrowed by fill). This bridge was the inspiration for the design of Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia which is about 60% bigger.[4]

Even if youre not into bridges, the Hell Gate bridge is an aesthetic marvel of bridgebuilding from the turn of the 20th century. It can be viewed up close and at a distance from Astoria Park, a great nearby area to spend some time.
