La Mama is a great place to go if you enjoy experimental theater. Ive a couple times and their performances are always deeply emotional and honest. The box office staff is very attentive and nice.

I saw 13 fruitcakes here and it was probably the BEST performance I have ever seen. The columbian snack foods there are delicious and homemade! If you like experimental theater then this is a place you absolutely have to catch a show at.

Their food selection was sufficient! The mic’ed piano sounded good too!

Fantastic venue, amazing work. The only downside is the WORST house manager I’ve ever had the displeasure to meet. Red haired older woman. She yelled at patrons, said condescending things to the orchestra, and generally just made herself problematic in any and every way she possibly could. Tragic that such an amazing venue has such a terrible employee...

This is a landmark OOB theater that came out of the slums of the 1970s East Village and really made a name for itself thanks to its founder Ellen Stewart. It was a great vehicle for young, struggling local performance artists some of whom have become very successful, actors, playwrights, etc.

One of the most important places on the cultural map of New York. Legendary theatre where many key directors were presenting their shows. Every week there is a chance to see something new and interesting here - if you are looking for contemporary dance or experimental theatre - this is the place to go. The theatre is open for international collaboration and it is the place to go if you are looking for space to present your piece in the Lower Manhattan area. Many great bars and restaurants close by.

Dramatic Acting in the Play Dont Feed The Indians. This theatrical masterpiece will make you laugh, it will make you cry and it will have you thinking long after the curtains are drawn. Walking into La Mama I had no idea what to expect! One things for certain I did not expect my breath to be taken away. It was been a week since I have seen this one of a kind play and I am still speechless! Education! Emotional! Heart Wrenching! During my stay in New York I saw countless amounts of shows on and off Broadway. Out of all the shows this is the only one I cant stop thinking about! If given the chance to see this play again and again I would be the first in line every time!

Ive only seen three performances here so far, and they had more differentiating them than tying them together, but some generalizations can be made. The productions here wont necessarily be the most professional, but tend to be something different, a bit off the beaten path. Always worth looking into, but at this price point, dont expect the Metropolitan Opera.

One of a kind historic venue, cannot count how many times I have been there over the past two centuries, but never a bad time. (Sometimes questionable art, but never dull, and always thought-provoking...)

Like any experimental company, the interpretations are hit or miss: some shows are exquisite others are more noise than substance. That said, in the world of safe, consumer focused Broadway theater, it is nice to have a place that is experimenting and trying to think outside of the box.
