If you have any interest in Theodore Roosevelt or NY Living in the mid 18 hundreds , visiting this site is a great way to indulge it. A short film on the first floor is the perfect introduction to young Theodore. Tours of the house are offered and the guide on the one I took was knowledgeable and welcoming of questions. I omit one star since the original house was demolished and the current one a reproduction although many of the family artifacts were restored to their proper place in the house. It’s FREE, always an incentive in NYC. It’s relatively small with just one downstairs gallery so a must to take the tour up the steps into the living quarters and bedrooms. . Check website for tour schedule

For a free place, I suppose one shouldn’t complain. The outside (as well as inside) is well maintained and nice to look out. You have the park ranger behind the desk who is a Teddy Roosevelt fanatic and will tell you all about him, unprompted. The museum itself is a bit sparse, evidenced more so by the empty cases in the back. You get to learn about his family origins and Teddy’s rise to president. There are numerous inspirational quotes by Teddy about how he focused on conservation, antitrust, and progressive policies.I was very impressed that they still had artifacts from when Roosevelt was alive, such as autographs of his cabinet, the glasses case that prevented a bullet from killing him, and the manuscript that took the bullets. To make the museum better, I would suggest expanding the tour to upper floors (not sure what else is in the building) and perhaps adding more detail about his policies, even if not all of it would shed positive light on him.

If youre a history buff & like to visit historical houses, this will scratch your itch. The things in here are not original but they are good replicas.Like most houses, this is only like an hour trip so not a good option if you want a full day trip. But if you want something short & interesting, this is it.They offer guided tours & you cant really linger, they keep it going, which was kind of annoying.

Free admission everyday! Nice museum showcasing the life and times of the first US President born in New York City. There are free guided tours showing the different rooms in the house, explaining their purpose and grandeur. The current building is beautiful but is only a reconstruction of the original one, which was demolished after a new owner took over. The Roosevelt family bought back the place after the Presidents death. Allot at least an hour when visiting.

Fabulous and very interesting historic site! Alyssa, one of the park rangers, gave a very informative and interesting tour through all the rooms in the house. I was dramatically impacted to see the accomplishments and National impact of a man with a weak heart and asthma but a lot of determination and persistence! We visited the TR birthplace birthplace museum on jan 2, 2020. we arrived 15 mins before the hourly guided tour was to begin. there is no fee for this tour with a national parks officer. it was great. the information, the history and being in the location where TR was born was a great experience. the building is beautiful. the display area was filled with interesting TR items & pictures. history comes alive. the parks officers were professional in their presentation , the ability to tell the background on the roosevelt family. it was a super way to spend 90 + minutes in new york city. this is a great country. this museum provides a glimpse in to a very important family who played an important role in our history. a great experience. jan 5, 2020. We were able to look into all the beautiful rooms of the home, which we weren’t the last time we took the tour years ago. It was fascinating to see the objects and furnishings not only of the Roosevelt family, but of the period. I had never seen horsehair up close before! We want to thank our guide for a great hour of information, jokes, questions and answers. Also, she quoted Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor with inspiring words for our troubled times. She made it one of our favorite moments of our stay in New York—and that’s saying something!

Literally was the only person there for over an hour. Barely anything in the museum cabinets other than photocopied papers and didactic panels with quotes and no context. Staff were loafing and wouldn’t start the video because it wasn’t on the half hour (but it also wasn’t playing when I came in, and as mentioned, I was the only person there). Tour guide volunteer was animated and knowledgeable, but for a reconstructed house it seemed a shame. Incredibly disappointed. There’s essentially nothing to look at unless you take the tour.

I’m a big fan of TR. Having said that, be aware that this is not really his birthplace, which was torn down, but a recreation that was rebuilt by Roosevelt family members around 1918. It is decorated with about 60% items that belonged to the family (the rest are period pieces). Having said all that, the museum is administered by the National Park Service, so it’s free to visit. If you’re in the neighborhood and not going out of your way, it’s interesting enough.

Speak softly and carry a big stick. While this quote from our 26th president was more related to his views on foreign policy, it is also an accurate representation of his historic birthhouse. While not as well known as other historical landmarks around NYC, it is a key view into one of our most impactful presidents. On the ground floor of the house, pictures and press clippings trace the history of TR from a little ahsmatic boy into the rugged rough rider and future president of the USA. However the main attraction here is a guided tour throughout the upstairs floors, taking you thru the early years of the Roosevelt family and providing a glimpse into the young life of a future president. Given his birthplace has been deemed a national historical park admission is free, and tours are every half hour on the hour.

I am a huge fan of Theodore Roosevelt so going to his birthplace (although re-created) was quite the thrill. As I have come to expect with National Park sites, the tour was excellent. I always learn a great deal about whatever topic is being discussed. Even though TR has had many excellent books written about him, the tour provided some interesting facts about his early life. It is especially interesting visiting this site because most people think of TR as the rugged guy who lived in what is now North Dakota. It is hard to reconcile that image with the reality that he grew up in Manhattan (even though it wasnt quite as bustling when he was born). I havent been back here in a few years but I definitely intend to start bringing visitors along (as long as they appreciate history).

This is the brownstone house where Teddy Roosevelt was born and have lived there for some time. Today, it is a museum that arranges short-term excursions about the house for FREE! A very interesting and informative talk you will have during that walk along the rooms and corridors of the buiding. They preserved the then furniture, items o interior, and the ambience of those times. You will peep into the rooms where the president was born, where they discussed Civil War over the big dinner table, where Teddy did some physical exercises to improve his health. Apart for a wonderfully preserved ambience you will learn many intersting facts about Teddy. He was born brought up in a very special, aristocratic and wise family that devoted much time and effort to raise a noble person like Teddy. There, you will learn what noblesse oblige stand for. I recommend.

Small museum on ground floor, guided tour through reconstructed brownstone where TR lived as a boy, really gives you a sense of his family history and dynamics, and how he developed into such an important part of the American story. We were in a rush when we visited, so only allowed about an hour, could easily spend 2 hours taking more time in the museum and gift shop. Excellent park ranger guide on the house tour. Museum also offers a very good docu-dramavideo that recreates TRs childhood, but it is very very old and there is not a proper theater so sound quality was terrible. Fortunately there were few people there so i just pulled my chair up close to the screen, or else i could not have heard it.

This space (footprint/airspace) is Theodore Roosevelts birthplace, not the house. It wasnt there. The house he lived in was torn down. this is a recreation. It is nice to see the recreation of a period house with period furnishing, and hear and learn about Theodore Roosevelt and his family who didnt live there because it didnt exist. Not only the home of the 26th President of the United States from birth to about age 12, but it is also the location of the founding of the American Museum of Natural History. The museum charter was developed and signed in the front parlor of the Roosevelt home on April 8, 1869.Your tour guide helps bring the place and its former occupants come to life.It has a pretty easy Junior Ranger program for the kids, which is a great introduction to TR (and the program if they havent done them elsewhere) and the kids love the badge they get, but they need to pay attention on the tour to get most of the answers. The rest can be figured out from reading the plaques in the visitor area or asking a ranger.Unfortunately, the museum exhibits on the lower level leave much to be desired. The only real items of interest are the shirt, eye glass case, and folded speech that TR had when shot in 1912, all showing the bullet holes. Years ago they used to have many of his own taxidermy birds from when he was a teenager, but they removed them after the renovation because they didnt have the right controlled environment for them. But if you are in lower Manhattan and have an hour to spare to grab the 40 minute tour and do it.
