The tour starts out with a video detailing the painstaking restoration that’s been done to the home. It really makes you appreciate all the hard work and attention to detail. The tour was very informative, and there was plenty of time to take photos, and look around each room. A beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece!

In planning our week-long trip to Michigan, we set aside Tuesday morning to visit the Meyer May House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It is a gem, Wright did a masterful job with this house. Meyer May was a perfect client, happy to do as the architect wished. What we didnt know is that there is no charge for the tour! As far as I know, the only Wright home open to the public which is free. Thanks to the Steelcase Corporation who preserved and renovated the home.

This is a gorgeous house in a lovely neighborhood. Guides are well-informed, and tour is quite comprehensive. Dont skip the movie that is shown beforehand, as it is fascinating and will add to your enjoyment of the tour. Its really nice that there is no admission charge (thank you, Steelcase). While youre here, leave yourself extra time to walk around the historic Heritage Hill neighborhood, and end your afternoon with a sandwich and cookies from Wealthy Street Bakery, right around the corner.

An utterly amazing house. Frank Lloyd Wright did an awesome job on this one. Cant wrap my head around the fact that it was designed and built in 1909!!!!! It looks sort of 1930s and futuristic as well as Arts and Crafts at the same time. Still ahead of its time over 110 years later!!! It was closed due to Covid when I was there, cant wait until its open so I can experience the interior.

Unbelievable experience going to this Frank Lloyd Wright designed house. You get to see a good amount of “compress and release” with the designed spaces in the house. It’s very narrow when you walk into the house and then there’s a breath of fresh air when you enter into the living room area. We were able to have dinner here with Steelcase which just added even more to the experience. Exceptional!

Im not super into architecture, but still really enjoyed visiting. The tour starts with a super interesting video explaining the in depth restoration process the home went through. The house itself is super neat and includes lots of furniture designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the home (some original and some reconstructed). Definitely a good way to spend and hour and a half if youre into houses or architecture. And its free!

The Heritage Hill District is ahistorical preservation neighborhood In Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Meyer May house is an excellent example of the high ceilings and ornate paneling in the largest, best preserved houses there. Full disclosure: I started the renovation about 46 years ago. The most recent owners have done a great job of preservation and restoration of this stately jewel.

What a treasure to have a Frank Lloyd Wright Home, right in town!TIP—> tours are on TUESDAYS, THURSDAYS, and SUNDAYS. Closed to the public other days of the week. Steelcase owns this building, and they graciously allow the tours to continue.I have toured the Meyer May house 3-4 times over the last 16 years, and each time I’ve learned something new. The pictures you will see here are no substitute for visiting this exquisite piece of architecture. One does not have to be an architectural expert to appreciate the uniqueness of this space.Your tour starts of with a short film next door, in the building just north of the Meyer May home. In the film you will see the amazing innovations and potential roadblocks to making this iconic home a reality.I loved the tours! Each docent was so very knowledgeable and helpful. They tell a lot of the backstory of the personalities of the people involved, and they also explain the functions of the items in the home. Yet each docent is open to questions you pose and is ready with an intelligent response.TIP—> There is a small gift shop inside the adjacent building with thoughtful gift items.TIP—> ask questions! There were times a docent would stay later just because he was happy to impart some nugget of wisdom or interest to me. So kind!

Visiting this house was a great way to get out on a Sunday afternoon. I liked how they broke the tour up into two parts. First we watched a video in the house next store and then took a guided tour through the Meyer May house. Both were very interesting and informative, with little redundancy. I noticed a tour group on the street while passing and was directed to their reception in the welcome centre in an adjacent building. I found the tour to be free and very well run, starting with a short orientation movie and followed by a guided walk around this fully restored Frank Lloyd Wright prairie style house. The guide was knowledgeable and passionate about the unique features of this exceptional design, full of observations about the life style of the original owners, and keen to point out how lovely were so many of the materials, colours and details. Some of the built-in features on exhibit were remarkably advanced for that era. Steelcase are the present owners of the property, and seem to have spared no expense in bringing it back to its original state. It was obviously an enormous undertaking. I left full of admiration for the architectural achievement here of this extraordinary talented architect, and for the generosity and dedication of the new owners. A memorably worthwhile visit.

The Meyer May house was designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright for a Grand Rapids clothing store owner named Meyer May in 1908. In the 1980s, furniture maker Steelcase purchased the then rundown and altered house, painstakingly restored it, and opened it to the public to enjoy!!A visit to the house today sharea the story of the restoration process via a 30ish minute video and then a docent-led guided tour of the house. The highly knowledgeable and passionate volunteer docents give insight into the family the house was built for and share information about architecture and design elements found throughout the entire property. The house is spectacular and absolutely worth visiting. Ive been several times!Visitors should plan to spend 1.5-2 hours here. You have to watch the 30ish minute video before entering the house, and if you arrive while the video is already playing, youll have to wait for it to finish until they let you watch it. Some docents are more chatty than others and may spend more time giving the tour.

This place was really cool. The fact that the house was built in the early 1900s is crazy. The details they were able to accomplish is mind-blowing. For example, recessed lighting! We take that as nothing special nowadays but this was done in 1908...there are over 100 windows that have stained glass! The mortar in between the fireplace bricks has glass over it so it shimmers. There are no downspouts because he didnt like vertical lines. Its something you have to see.
