If you want to learn the history of the low country, this is a definite stop. This staff are amazing we showed up 30 minutes before close and they still set up a movie for us to watch and answered all of the questions that we had and never once complained about the time. We will be booking a tour with a larger group to go back and see the homes.

I was here as a chaperone for 6 graders on a school field trip from out of town. Some things were interesting. The film was boring but necessary because it gives you the history of this historic place. The interesting things to me were the knowledge of the staff they were awesome, the woodpeckers, and how some wooded environments need fire to continue to flourish.

I can only review the Discovery Center and the Fairfield Village Tour, thanks to the Covid 19 restrictions. The full bus tour is not operational at this time due to social distancing. Ill start with the staff (volunteers). From the nice lady at the desk to the tour guides (Liz Lewis & Jeanne Arnold) top notch! Liz & Jeanne are retired teachers who are evenly as knowledgable about the plantation & grounds as they are friendly. We followed them, in our SUV down the wooded dirt road, to the restored slave village and went inside the church and several of the homes. We were treated to wonderful stories about the folk who lived there and worked the plantation both as slaves and as free people who wanted to stay where their ancestors had been buried. We even got to see the original Kings Highway going right through the property. It was a real disappointment to hear we could not ride by the plantation home for some inexplicable reason. There were only three of us there at the 2:00 tour. What a shame! The $12 each was well worth the 2 hour tour and the historical information about the family & planation you can read about at the Discovery Center. It was wonderful to hear about the history of the rice and indigo that used to grow on the plantation, and how the new owners (in the early 1900-50s), restored it and gave jobs to former slaves.

We took the behind the scenes tour with Jeanne and it was superb! She is a terrific guide and all the elements of the tour were fun and informative. It lasted 3 hours and we wished it lasted longer. This is a “can’t miss” if u are near Georgetown or Myrtle Beach. The tour cost is ridiculously low for what you get.

The people are all very nice but compared to the tour we had in Charlestown this was expensive and thin. The mini bus had a leak that doused a woman in the front seat, the buildings are in some cases falling apart. If you want to see how the plantations buildings looked originally this isnt the place. More buildings built in 1900s then anything else. Not a bad stop just not real good.

I went to a fundraiser for a local Museum at Hobcaw Barony. It was a beautiful setting. It is down by a river and has a beautiful screened-in room that was easy to sit in and eat food. We had been at the same fundraiser at a different location the year before, and this was a much better place. It would be great for weddings as it is very scenic. I havent been there just to visit it normally, but it worked wonderfully for a function.

Just to let everyone know before driving almost an hour like we did....In order to see the grounds and buildings (other than the discovery center/gift shop), you HAVE to pay $20/person for a tour guide. For us it would have been almost $200. Its not optional like their website says.
