This plantation is fascinating. The owners live on the property and allow for tours in the home. The tea room has food that is top notch and the Gin Gin soup is out of this world amazing!! Ms. Vera comes and teaches sweet grass basket weaving and is extremely interesting. Spend the day there, you wont want to leave. Love this place!!!! Definite 5 star PLUS!!

Beautiful plantation home with an interesting your about the home and the families that live and have lived there.A real miss is the historic context on plantations and slavery. I would have been really interested in learning more about the live of the slaves, and the (horrible?) lives they must have had. Especially because they are the ones responsible for all of the wealth of their owners. It just feels unjust to not give them the credit they deserve, and a shame not to learn from the past.I can recommend the tea room for lunch or tea! Be sure to make a reservation.

Its not often that you can find pre civil war plantations like this. Most were looted and burned after the war. This is a wonderful piece of history. There is a retired couple living in the home but they make it available to tours. A very neat tour describing how the rice fields came to be the local cash crop after the indigo crop demand disappeared once the British stopped buying it to dye their blue navy uniforms. The cafe there was delicious! Had some gumbo on top of Carolina Gold Rice, the same kind of rice that was grown on this plantation a century ago.

I give this a 4. It was a pretty location, right on the river, and a great walking place. However, the tea room, while quaint, was more for girls than guys. I didnt see anything special, and my wife liked it. It was expensive. Be warned, this is not a cheap place. The tea was good, but you can buy it at the Charleston Tea Plantation. The house tour was good, it some facts were wrong. A lot of it was opinion and as a South Carolinian didnt quite like the opinion. Such as, nobody likes magnolia trees cause the leaves are slippery and the blooms are all at the top? Gotta say, I grew up getting the blooms and putting them out for Easter, as did many other Carolinians I know.Lastly, this is someones residence. So we saw phone cords and stuff out. It felt like we were invading somebodys privacy. Kinda felt wierd. All on all, a fine place to visit once. I wouldnt make the trek for a second time.

My husband and I absolutely loved our day trip to Hopsewee! The plantation is beautiful and the tour really gives you an idea of what the house would have been like during the Civil War era. The inside and outside of the home is breathtaking. The original slave quarters are also really cool to checkout. The plantation falls short of 5 stars because we felt things could have been a bit more organized. There was some difficulty getting the video to play at the beginning of the tour. It also took a few minutes for someone to sell us tickets once we walked into the shop.

Disappointing. For $20 i took the house tour. I know more about the guide than the families that lived there. A tourist trap in my opinion. A must see. This picturesque and historical rice plantation has the original home to tour, although the home is being lived in by the current owners. Artifacts are original. Bambi gave a fasinating history of the home and property. Beautiful grounds to walk/hike/picnic. Better yet, have lunch at the wonderful on-site tea room. Delicious menu items from which to choose. Did the tour today it was informative, would have liked to hear about the slaves and how the plantation operated. We had lunch reservations for 12:30 but because of staff shortage and others without reservations we were not seated until 1:00. Left about 1:15 never having been acknowledged by a server or even receiving water. The menu looked wonderful sad we never got to taste anything.

Review №50

I arrived early for my 12:30 reservation time. The place was packed with women on a bus tour and the staff was clearly overwhelmed and underprepared. Even though I was there well before my reservation time, I was made to stand in a line for 45 minutes before being seated. This wasn’t easy because I’m disabled and didn’t have my walker with me, as I assumed I’d be seated at the time the restaurant told me to be there. After those 45 minutes, I said to the greeter, “I’m getting a very strong feeling that you don’t want me here.” She just stared at me, not replying! So I guess I was right. A single person can be an annoyance to a restaurant staff, one customer taking up a whole table. When the greeter finally got around to seating me (after taking several groups before me who had arrived after I did), she said, “We have a party coming in a half hour who will need your table, so we hope you’ll be finished by then.” I couldn’t believe my ears! This was a bad joke! She’d seated me 45 minutes after my reservation time and now she was rushing me! I decided to stay, anyway, asking her to give me a different table than the one reserved for the party coming in a half hour. I dont know why she didnt think of that solution herself, as she was able to comply with my request. Once seated, I waited and waited for a server to approach. When she finally did, she was abrupt and even rude. She, too, made me feel like an imposition. She took my order and brought my pot of tea fairly quickly, but a FULL HOUR went by and she never brought my food. At that point, of course, I’d finished the tea and just had to decide how much longer I’d be willing to wait for the food. I finally realized my patience was gone. I got up and walked out without paying for the tea. I think this crazy place owed me those two cups of tea for what they’d put me through. I don’t think anyone on the staff even noticed that I’d left.

This was one of my familys favorite experiences while visiting Myrtle Beach. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and quite fascinating. She was also African American and it was really great to hear about the plantations history through her eyes The property is well-maintained, as the owners live there. Really looked forward to our visit here. Came with a group of 15. Made reservations weeks in advance. Pre-ordered lunches off the menu ahead of time. The tour was okay. Tour guide Bambi was entertaining and informative. Worth $20? No. Our lunch reservation was 12:30 but at 12:20 we were told a bus had shown up 2 hours early and they were being seated ahead of us. We waited until 1:30 to be seated, then waited for drinks and some of us another hour for food. I got the sampler. I give it a try and/10.As we were eating, the staff were trying to get us to check out - even though most had pre-ordered dessert. The waitress who brought out desserts literally tossed them onto the table. Wow!I brought a friend from out of town and she got the worst of the day. First, they tried to say they didnt have her order. They tried to give her something else. Shes a diabetic and by this time her blood sugar was dangerously low. They finally brought her a cup of soup. When she was finally brought her order - shrimp and grits - it wasnt really shrimp and grits! Ive lived in the south forever and this was some concoction they threw together in the kitchen.Im so disappointed and embarrassed! Ill never be back. And Ill share my experience with my friends who were awaiting my review before making arrangements to visit themselves. Beautiful setting. Food was okay but nothing to write home about. Service was bad ️ If I could give it 0 stars I would. Quite frankly, we have too many wonderful historic places with friendly, informative volunteers and staff, and delicious food - to waste your time here just isnt worth it.

The grounds and house were very interesting, 270 years old almost all original. Had some problems with the hostess. We had called ahead to make sure we could go on the tour and were told it was full when we got there. After we got there we made reservations for the tea room. The hostess acted as if she was doing us a favor and didnt have the resources to seat us. There were plenty of tables that just needed to be cleaned. Karen, a waitress, tried to seat us several times but the hostess kept stopping her. Karen was very helpful and kind.

Pretty space with traditional home, but disappointed in the information provided in the tour and by the superfluous video that we watched. It was a very informative tour, despite the initial issue with the DVD player not working for the pre-tour. The staff seems to do their best to make you feel comfortable by providing ample bug spray, for example. I found the tour itself well guided, although we would have preferred someone who had not moved to the area 5 months ago. There has to be a local who could assist with their history. The gift shop also was not well stocked with items that would really help tell the Hopsewee story. Perhaps sell a long version of the DVD of Hopsewee, a few old framed pictures of the plantation. The gift shop has potential.

I actually did my homework before choosing Hopsewee as our plantation stop in South Carolina. It was a very good tour and exactly what I expected of a 1700s plantation.I read other reviews about not getting much information about the slaves. I guess Im a proponent of asking questions. We asked about why the house was spared Shermans burning spree and that led to a great conversation about the slaves on the property, the other plantations Lynch owned. The tour guide had a wealth of information and was very willing to talk about any topic that was brought up by those on the tour.Come armed with questions and you wont be disappointed.
