Easy to find historical site in the town of Carthage. I visited in December so had no issues with bugs as others reported. The trail goes up by the spring and crosses over the top of rock outcroppings. Pretty walk. Easy enough for families but would advise that there are no railings for safety if you have very small children. It loops back across the lawn, and depending on water flow, you may have to contend with a wet crossing at the far end. The site was not trashed up, but there are no trash cans, so pack out trash to preserve the beauty. There are also no facilities of any kind but a couple of picnic tables that would be shady in the summer. The open lawn might be a fun spot for a game of frisbee though!

Jasons Travel Log, stardate 1237.101 rounded to the nearest thousandth.Stopped by the Carthage War site in Carthage MO. Not much too it, apparently there is a cave somewhere, but its pretty basic. Three boards, a patch of cut grass, and a small parking lot.The Battle of Carthage, or Battle of Dry Fork, happened very early on in the civil war and was one of the first battles after Lincoln declared War Power. Its the only battle in US history where a, then standing, state governor (Jackson, Missouri Governor) lead confederate troops against the union.Although only a small percentage died, it was declared a win for the south and helped with recruiting forces to join the South.Although union forces were outnumbered 6 to 1, they killed more than 4 to 1. They retreated and fought and left pretty much unscathed.

Beautiful prairie by the stream, but anti-climactic compared to other Civil War sites in the region (Wilsons Creek, Pea Ridge, etc.). The Museum in town is worth a visit! We just happened to be there at the same time as the great grandson of Cpt. John R Andrews. Aside from them looking identical, the swords (Battle of1812) and letters from his original journal that Captain Andrews wrote home about are invaluable to historic sites. Eat at the Deli and visit the Antique Mall on the square before you leave.

Its a neat little Park great for picnics or walking a short Trail the negatives no bathrooms and they did have a bench to sit on along the trail but it was removed and I have to say Im very aggravated about that there are not enough places to set along the trail to enjoy nature you pretty much just have to keep moving until you get back to the entrance unless you want to sit on the ground or a rock but on another note they do have a picnic table at the beginning of the trail. There is a neat little Springs along the way with little fish and things like that. Something that would make the park great is if they would take care of the spring maybe clean it up dig out the mud and stock it with some wild life like fish on one occasion I have seen deer running around the park and raccoons. Carthage doesnt have near enough places to fish and this would attract visitors. Kellogg lake is overfished and full of snags and junk. just an idea. Anyway this is a beautiful little Park all in all I give it two thumbs up.

This is my favorite place to clear my head and escape for a while. Although its really close to a city park and can be loud, its still a very peaceful place to visit, especially if youre walking the trail on the bluff and just enjoying the nature.
