We have planned to visit here for many years and finally made it. Beautifully restored home of Walt Whitman, Americas greatest poet. We very much enjoyed our visit and tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and great with our kids.

I was looking forward to touring the house of Americas most important poet of the 19th century. My husband and I never made it inside the museum yesterday. It is great that the museum does not charge for tours of the house. However, the man living next door to the museum was sitting on his front stoop while publicly intoxicated, yelling at residents down the block, and threatening them with a handgun in his pocket. We did not know if the gentleman would damage our vehicle while we were inside Whitmans house. I did not see anyone else waiting to tour the house. For the safety of our own lives, we decided to cancel our plans. The state of NewJersey, which owns this historical home, should ensure all.visitors feel safe while parking and touring this major visitor attraction of New Jersey and the city of Camden. Otherwise, they are losing individuals and families who would want to learn more about Walt Whitman and the house he lived in. It was a shame that we never had the opportunity.

Call ahead to be sure that the house will be open, and they will have you make an appointment since its a personally guided tour. The tour guide meets you out front and provides information on Whitmans history, as well as some history on the surrounding area. Youre able to see most rooms in the house, each of which are filled with Whitmans personal belongings, with the tour ending in the yard. The house is beautifully maintained and set up. There is no photography permitted within the house. The tour guide was friendly and very knowledgeable of Whitman, his family, friends, and the surrounding area. Definitely worth the trip!

Our visit to the Walt Whitman House was the highlight of our visit to the Philadelphia area. The guide who took us on a tour was professional and very knowledgeable about Walt Whitman. Along with the Edgar Allan Poe House, this is a must see for those who love literature and history. Plus, Its a very cool old house. Make sure to call ahead to check the hours and make a reservation for the guided tour. We just showed up and the tour was full so we had to wait to come back for the next one.

O Whitman, my Whitman! This place makes me so happy and so sad - do I contradict myself? Very well, then, I contradict myself; I am large and contain multitudes. Who visits this house visits a Man, camerado...
