Nice open grass area and the site of both an Apalachee village and the DeSoto encampment. The main office for the Florida Bureau of archaeological research is also located here. Stop by for some fun history. Fyi, the office is closed to the public until Covid-19 is no longer a safety risk.

One of most historic place at the town, the artifacts was amazing and this is a very informative place to bring your child over, plus the staff is friendly and knowledgeable enough to entertain questions.

Great little museum of first Europeans to spend time in the USA, including Apalachee and later Seminole artifacts, in the home of a Florida governor. Helpful, friendly staff, and free admission! Much to see, learn and enjoy in one big room. Do stop in, when its open, or at least see the kiosk outside when passing by on this piece of the historic Dixie Highway (Lafayette Street).

The museum is kind of small, but the staff there was incredible. Very nice and informative, seemed interested in the history and sharing it. Would highly recommend!

No other humans on the property. No visitors. No staff. Tons of cars but no people. And the pictures on Google maps are misleading - we never saw the little huts or campsites shown there and we walked all over. Maybe if done staff had been arrive we could have asked them, but there was no one. Just a small little one-room museum and nothing else. Very disappointing.

Very small park, but I walked down to a public pond from here and that was nice. Other than that, not a place I would come to again.

History Buffs of Early Florida wont want to miss this one. Theres plenty of Wiki out there, but Ill bullet-point some of the key points:In 1987, archaeologist Calvin Jones discovered conclusive evidence of DeSoto and nearly 600 armed men encamped here. 40,000 artifacts were unearthed.Evidence? - Well, consider the following:Chain mail armor.Copper coins,Crossbow bolt tip.Spanish trade beadsSpanish olive jar fragmentsThe icing on the cake? - a hog jawbone. Hogs werent in the New World.Anyway - Ill be adding photos over the coming weeks - but this just serves to remind you that history is alive and well in TLH!Im a history buff. Frankly, its cheap entertainment - and it gets you out of the house.Governor Martins house, not coincidentally, is at the precise location of DeSotos encampment during the winter of 1539/1540. If youre anywhere near Cascades park - its worth the detour to check this out.Really.What else are you going to do?
