If you are an art lover, then make sure to add the War Memorial Opera House to your list of best things to do in San Francisco. Keep in mind that tickets sell out quickly. Therefore, if you’d like to attend performances such as The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, and Frankenstein, then book a few months before your trip. If you decide to take in a show at the Opera House, you may wish to dress up for the occasion – but it is not required.

The opera is as magnificent as those in Europe but it’s special in its own right. The largest in the US, the aluminium chandelier is unique and designed to withstand the shakes and rolls of SF’s notorious earthquakes. Beautiful waiting halls and elaborate tapestries adorning the walls

Full house on a Tuesday evening for Romeo and Juliet performance. Its a nice experience even for those who dont know music all that much. I strongly suggest getting tickets in advance and arriving early. Its a beautiful place to be appreciated without rush. Most people dress well for the occasion (kind of formal) but it isnt really a must.

We went to see the Cinderella Ballet in this beautiful building. There are plenty of bathrooms for the hundreds of guests. The food, snacks and drinks are readily available at normal prices. We could hear the outstanding, perfect orchestra. The dancers were beautifully, richly, costumed. The seats are comfortable and everyone can see the whole stage, no matter where one sits. All in all a wonderful, memorable experience.

Pre-opera lectures are nice. Nice venue. Shows vary. Nice old school building makes it feel like an event. Some folks get super dressed up. Others come as they are. Parking at civic center garage works well. Lots of places for dinner around before or after the show. Seats are old and not very comfy.

Home to SF ballet. A beautiful theater that has been maintained well. The chairs are very cushiony and comfortable in that respect, but room to move is limited - not much shoulder space. This is stereotypical of historic theatres though. There are ample bathrooms (not a long wait) and concession stands. Water costed $6, you cant bring your own in. Paper programs and booklets were complimentary. Staff very friendly and hospitable. I dont think there would be a bad seat in the house.

The place is amazing and well distributed in a way that you can always have a good view of the stage. The Nutcracker is an unique experience in life. They just should find a solution for the lines at the snack bar where many people can get their snacks/beverages just about the show is set to restart (during the intermission).

The building is lovely. Went to see the Nutcracker. As three grown unsophisticated men going to the ballet, it was sorta boring after the first act. All the movies and adaptations only cover the Mouse King part that ends at the end of the first half. The second half is Clara touring the world. It was worth the experience. We sat in center balcony and had a great view and could see all the patterns and synchronization of the dancers. I can not speak for side balcony.

Wow, a review, really?Okay! Beautiful building, beautiful events. Overall a lovely experience, even if you dont see a performance at the opera house. I did see Marriage of Figaro yesterday and it was a wonderful and more modern production but still traditional. However, the opera house it self is iconic and, frankly, incredible. If you want to see a beginnerfriendly opera, though, this one is it!

Really wish the opera was made more available to people like me with less money but a love for the art! Fortunately Im sure all the proceeds go to paying the stellar musicians and cast that put on these brilliant performances. I was more than happy to pay for my seat!My father is in opera, and I used to see him perform in the Sacramento Opera, there as well, I noticed it is generally for high society. How can we make fine art more available to the middle and lower class? When do we hold the rich accountable for antiquating and locking these art forms behind golden doors? Hopefully the opera remains as gilded and beautifully supported as it is now in the future, but I fear it will forever be an old fantasy for aristocrats.MAKE ALL FINE ARTS SLIDING SCALE!
