This is a nice place to take some photos. The photos came out to be nice like you are in the real background, blended in, and have fun. I like the photos I took. However the room seems to be kinda small, and it is kinda pricey for what it is. Its just a painted wall. My friend did not like it. But if you are someone who like photos, you will like it.

Quintessential visit in the forward thinking, diverse culture of San Francisco - the walking tours are engaging with thorough explanation of the artist’s conviction. Enjoyed the quiet space amongst the noisy city backdrop. It is contemporary, and the museum is not overtly Jewish in its exhibits, so you will be pleasantly surprised by the breath and depth of culture.

We attended specifically for their tattoo exhibit about Lew the Jew. I found it very interesting, especially with the context of how taboo tattoos are in Judaism. I am not Jewish by ethnicity or religion, nor did I have time to explore the rest of the museum, so can only speak to that specific exhibit. Also, every staff member that I met there was incredibly kind and helpful.

Visited purely by chance and what a great find! I didnt know what to expect and thought may be similar to the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. Its contemporary arts exhibits rival any national and international level museum.

There are many wonderful reasons to visit the Contemporary Jewish Museum. They have great exhibits including one of the history of Levy Strauss and how he developed his clothing business. The exhibit is pretty extensive and worth investing a few hours of your time. While the exhibits change, one great feature of the museum is that Wise and Sons Deli is open for lunch everyday. Their hours are limited but their menu has some wonderful Jewish items and they might have the best rye bread in San Francisco!

Lovely contemporary art museum in San Francisco. No parking, nice little cafe inside. Special exhibitions that change frequently cover a wide variety of topics and media. Went on a great docent tour of the special exhibition which really helped me understand the symbolism in the works.

Great place to spend a couple hours. Some reviewers are calling this place pricey, but at $14 for adults it’s a much better deal than many other museums in the area (which can run at $25-50 a ticket). They feature a ton of contemporary, local artists and change main exhibitions every few months. I’ll definitely be back!

It’s the best museum! Worth the visit for the architecture. They offer free general admission on first Tuesday of ever month. At the entry gate you have to stop for checking. They conduct tours, have conference hall. Brilliant architecture, great collection. Makes you think about the art and culture of Jewish people. On the second floor one section was closed due to some work in progress. They will probably start it in March!

Like many Jewish museums, it has excellent, ambitious and unique exhibitions that not only address art but the larger culture and history of the diaspora. Also like many contemporary Jewish museums, it is partially comprised of a building designed by Daniel Libeskind, a prolific architect. If you like contemporary avant-garde architecture, this is a boon to you. In this case it creates an environment that’s as much a work of art as the exhibition pieces it houses. The Libeskind building merges with the historical Beaux-Arts building in a gorgeous hall, which I show below.

This museum is a lovely gem in the middle of San Francisco. I attended the Stanley Kubrick exhibit and was impressed by the depth of artifacts theyd gathered, a mix of photos and videos along with costumes and historical / personal information. The museum was well curated and its always nice to stop by the Wise Sons within the museum. Theres some beautiful natural light all throughout the building.

If you are into really out of the box modern sculpture, then you will probably appreciate this museum now than I did. It was a bit much for me. they have a fun small kids area downstairs, which is probably a good thing. Might leave them down there before going upstairs to the more adult art.Anyhow, staff was great, the tour guide was funny and knowledgeable.

Smallish museum, but they always have wonderful touring exhibitions. half of the outside of the building looks ominous like a secret villains lair (gift shop side), and the other facade looks like museum. inside -its not the biggest, but Im sure you will find a gem or two that will make the trip worth it.

Review №27

The emphasis of this museum is contemporary. If you are looking for a history or more traditional experience this will not be a fit. The museum is dominated by exhibit space so one visit may be quite unlike the next. The exhibits I visited were about the surprising influence of Jewish men in the rise of American body art after the Spanish-American war, traditions which are often still seen on men today. The other exhibit was a multi-media study of identify, body, and self. They were engaging and accessible but there was also depth for the more serious student of the arts. I would recommend it, particularly if there is an exhibit of interest. Thus four stars because as with all things, the quality of the exhibits will vary. I would rather give it a rating that fluctuates between 4 and 5 but this is not an option.

Of all the museums we went to during the culture for community day this was definitely the best one of the day! I got to ring a giant bell and play with a few other cool pieces of art work as well plus they had an entire floor dedicated to a tattoo artist. This museum blew away the stereotype of what I thought it would be and I loved it!

I really liked the Contemporary Jewish Museum. They have a restaurant inside the museum that I tried before going through the museum. The food was good but a bit expensive for what you get. While paying for the admission, the attendant gave me a voucher to visit the museum for free due to the construction going on inside the museum. I thought that was nice. I enjoyed the exhibits.

We went on 1st Tuesday of the month which is a free admission day… still feel like we got ripped off. The Contemporary Jewish Museum is neither contemporary nor Jewish and barely qualifies as a museum. It is a post modern display of random non defined cultural art. No rhyme or reason which relates it to Judaism. I dont claim to be an expert on contemporary art but this really was a collection of dreck. I sincerely hope that no public funding was provided to support this museum. It embarrssses me as a Jew. Restrooms were very clean.

Every 1st Tuesday of the month the museum is free. On free day, there is a movement class for seniors. I teach chair yoga and I took my group of seniors there in May. Wow, such a great group of people. Dancing, laughing, sharing good vibes all to live music! From my understanding, the band changes every month. Ill need to check out the art next time, its been a while since I roamed the galleries.

This is a nice little museum filled with all things related to the Jewish culture.During my visit, the bottom level was showcasing an exhibit of photographs taken in the 1960s - 1980s and it was interesting to learn about some of the history behind the subjects in the photographs and the photographer.Upstairs is where the more contemporary (and interesting I might add) art was showcased. A lot of different abstract paintings as well as art objects/setups were shown along with descriptions for each one. I found some of the art pieces very interesting and I always like to imagine what the artist was thinking when they created his/her work of art.All in all, a fun place to visit and absorb a little bit of culture!

This mid-sized museum has a unique cultural perspective; its quite approachable from a non-Jewish background and also pays tribute to artwork displaying a variety of religious iconography. A balanced perspective seems to ask the viewer, well, what do you think? I did enjoy spending a relaxing afternoon taking in some of the exhibits, including a touring exhibition of Allen Ginsbergs photography. Its a bit pricey for its size, but a lot of modern works displaced during the MoMA renovation has found a lovely temporary home here. Great museum to visit, but I recommend seeing it on a free museum day or going when theres an exhibit or event you really want to experience.
