Ive been a couple of times over the last few years and its pretty cool. I mean, driving over it is like most other big bridges youll cross. Except for maybe this one invokes some memory flashes from movie scenes that took place there. Its fun to see it from different angles from across the bay and other bridges. I definitely recommend observing it from the windy mountain road above it. Some definitely spectacular and photo worthy moments from up there.

Golden Gate Bridge is a must visit place if youre visiting San Francisco City. Youll be amazed to see such a gigantic structure developed by Engineers decades ago when Technology and infrastructures were not this much advanced. Driving through this Bridge with your Sunroof open, where you see Pacific ocean on the left side and SF Bay on the left side, is a phenomenal experience in itself. If youre ok walking 1.7 miles, you can walk across the bridge while enjoying the cool breeze of air while enjoying the ocean view, watching ferry, taking pictures.

E Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide (1.6 km) strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The structure links the U.S. city of San Francisco, California—the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula—to Marin County, carrying both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait. The bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco and California. It was initially designed by engineer Joseph Strauss in 1917. It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.[7]The Frommers travel guide describes the Golden Gate Bridge as possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world.[8][9] At the time of its opening in 1937, it was both the longest and the tallest suspension bridge in the world, with a main span of 4,200 feet (1,280 m) and a total height of 746 feet (227 m).[10]Ferry serviceFurther information: Ferries of San Francisco BayBefore the bridge was built, the only practical short route between San Francisco and what is now Marin County was by boat across a section of San Francisco Bay. A ferry service began as early as 1820, with a regularly scheduled service beginning in the 1840s for the purpose of transporting water to San Francisco.[11]The Sausalito Land and Ferry Company service, launched in 1867, eventually became the Golden Gate Ferry Company, a Southern Pacific Railroad subsidiary, the largest ferry operation in the world by the late 1920s.[11][12] Once for railroad passengers and customers only, Southern Pacifics automobile ferries became very profitable and important to the regional economy.[13] The ferry crossing between the Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco and Sausalito Ferry Terminal in Marin County took approximately 20 minutes and cost $1.00 per vehicle,[when?] a price later reduced to compete with the new bridge.[14][better source needed] The trip from the San Francisco Ferry Building took 27 minutes. Many wanted to build a bridge to connect San Francisco to Marin County. San Francisco was the largest American city still served primarily by ferry boats. Because it did not have a permanent link with communities around the bay, the citys growth rate was below the national average.[15] Many experts said that a bridge could not be built across the 6,700-foot (2,000-metre) strait, which had strong, swirling tides and currents, with water 372 ft (113 m) deep[16] at the center of the channel, and frequent strong winds. Experts said that ferocious winds and blinding fogs would prevent construction and operation.[15]Although the idea of a bridge spanning the Golden Gate was not new, the proposal that eventually took hold was made in a 1916 San Francisco Bulletin article by former engineering student James Wilkins.[17] San Franciscos City Engineer estimated the cost at $100 million (equivalent to $2.3 billion today), and impractical for the time. He asked bridge engineers whether it could be built for less.[11] One who responded, Joseph Strauss, was an ambitious engineer and poet who had, for his graduate thesis, designed a 55-mile-long (89 km) railroad bridge across the Bering Strait.[18] At the time, Strauss had completed some 400 drawbridges—most of which were inland—and nothing on the scale of the new project.[3] Strausss initial drawings[17] were for a massive cantilever on each side of the strait, connected by a central suspension segment, which Strauss promised could be built for $17 million (equivalent to $399 million today).[11]Local authorities agreed to proceed only on the assurance that Strauss would alter the design and accept input from several consulting project experts.[citation needed] A suspension-bridge design was considered the most practical, because of recent advances in metallurgy.[11]Strauss spent more than a decade drumming up support in Northern California.[19] The bridge faced opposition, including litigation, from many sources. The Department of War was concerned that the bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is an iconic structure connecting the city of San Francisco to Marin County, California. It spans almost two miles across the Golden Gate, the narrow strait where San Francisco Bay opens to meet the Pacific Ocean. The dream of connecting San Francisco to its northern neighbors became a reality when construction commenced in 1933. Given the chance for steady employment amid the Great Depression, construction crews braved treacherous conditions as the roadway and towers took shape over open water. The Golden Gate Bridge, opened to the public in 1937, has endured as a picture-perfect landmark and an engineering marvel.

As I am a movie buff and was thrilled to see the bridge appearing in movies like Superman: The movie, Climax scene in James Bond movie, A View to a Kill, Zodiac, Godzilla etc, it was my longtime dream to visit the place. My son happily took me there to fulfill my desire. The 1 mile long Suspension Bridge, full of steel connects San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean and was completed in four years in 1937. Its suspended from a height of 746 feet and carries on it a 6 lane traffic. Its an engineering marvel and stands a proof for achievement of proud planners and engineers. For a common man its a stunning beauty. You can walk- Beautiful!, you can drive- beautiful, Stand and watch endless trail of vehicles passing, it is still memorable. I liked it very much silently appreciating and thanking God for providing an opportunity to see this architectural wonder of the world. Nicely maintained too. Whether you watch in day or at night it is eye catching. Night view is still spectacular with lighting.A place worth seeing in San Francisco and dont miss it!

San Francisco and the mid-sixties were a special place and a special time to be a part of. But no explanation, no mixture of words, music and memories could touch the awareness of being there, alive, in that corner of time and world, whatever that meant. There was madness in every direction, at any time, you could spark sparks everywhere, there was a fantastic, universal feeling that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. And that, I think, was our foothold, that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of the old and evil, not in a violent or evil sense, we didnt need it, our energy would simply prevail, we had all the momentum, we rode the crest of a very high and wonderful wave.

Well lets see I been living here since 1977 and still have yet to walk across it. I drive through it every single day though. Is just just another bridge that we use to cross the bay. Im not about to freeze my nuts off just to walk across it. But maybe someday I will walk cross this great bridge of ours.

I went to every corner of the bridge. Awesome views from all. Baker beach had about 30 old naked guys on the beach end closest to the bridge. So watch out if you have kids. But its ine of the better photo ops.

If you’re wondering which place you should visit first in San Francisco, at that point the Golden Gateis almost certainly your best bet. Furthermore, chances are you’ve already seen this famous bridge all over the movies and San Fransisco memorabilia. If you ever do decide to stroll over the bridge to tour, at that point ensure youre wearing something warm! The weather at the top is generally cold yet the view is justified, despite all the trouble. If you walk from Pier 39, youll find numerous other tourist destinations on your way to the bridge.

The bridge is a beautiful and iconic part of San Francisco. Driving across the bridge is cool. Going across on a tour bus with the guide giving much information is cool. Walking across is cool. I enjoyed renting a bike and riding across the most.Amazing views of the bay, the city, and Alcatraz.

I recently visited the bridge again this time walking across the bridge. Getting to the parking lot after coming off the freeway was the only complicated part dues to a road block. Once we navigated our way around that we were back on track. The parking lot was not full. (A tip about parking) its very windy so beware of accidental door dings and what not. The parking lot has great potential as well for great photos even before you get to the bridge. For me walking the bridge was exhilarating. We went on an absolutely clear day. You could see Fort Baker, Treasure Island, Alcatraz, Sausalito Bay and the Bay Bridge clearly. At times it was windy but there were times when there was no wind and it felt exhilarating. This day only one side was open to the public. You had bikes coming and going. Everyone was able to navigate around each nicely. Riders used their bells to alert of passing by. Walking across the bridge was fantastic and it left me with amazing energy when it was over. Im so glad I had this opportunity. I got very lucky with the clear day. Everything looks beautiful from the bridge

Must see for tourists and locals. If your taking public transportation, the shuttle no longer goes directly to bridge (covid), but it takes you to a shuttle stop about a 15 min walk to it. The walk/detour has nice look outs too.

Great photo spot. Walking on the bridge can be tricky with all the people and bikes. Also the traffic noise is bad. However, you do get a great view.

The bridge itself is magnificent. San Francisco not so much. Perhaps if the stench of the city wasnt quite so yucky it would have been much better. Im sure its not that way for the locals, but on that day the smell was of offal, rotting fish and other things. For someone else it could be an adventure, just not for me.
