THE ROCK!!!! One of the best experiences in my life... the whole tour with the guided headphones tour it was so interactive so you can feel and see what happened and when and which place took part all this things. You can feel goosebumps in every corner. With a boat from pier 33 its approx 15-20mins and its so nice cause we can see San Fran from another point of view. Definitely Ill recommend this place and everyone has to put it in the bucket list

Alcatraz is part of San Francisco. Which is probably my favorite city in America. Alcatraz is a must to visit when you go to San Francisco. It must have been a place you wont want to be sent. Golden Gate Bridge is a wonder to see. Riding the cable cars is an experience, you can stand on the footboards and swing. Lombard Street the twisty road. Fishermens Wharf to walk along and see the seals.

My favorite place to visit. Had to hold my phone to my ear to be able to listen to the tour which we had to download off the Google play store. No option for speaker mode. It also only had about 7 or 8 episodes and didnt help with the order of how to use play them either. So we could be in the garden and get an episode on the recreation center where the inmates played sports etc. Otherwise, great and fun!

I don’t know where to start. First of all you will need to buy tickets for ferry then it will take you at least 15 minutes onto the island. Then you will walk outside for a little bit. There’s an entrance where you will be given headphones and a cassette. The cassette is basically a recorded audio of prisoners who used to be there. They will guide you across the whole prison. They will give you decent amount of information about everything. After that you can buy some things in souvenir shops. You will then go back by the ferry. I recommend this, this is a must to do activity if you’re in San Francisco.

For the tour that currently is in place, I cant recommend this based on the price of admission and being to the island previously. They are doing a great job of sanitizing between trips but the one building open on Indian history and cell block size on the pavement is nothing compared to what they could have done. I understand they do have the podium write-ups but that didnt do it for me. From what I understand they are reopening in waves but I cant confirm that.

The government seems Not interested in taking care of the island, everything is in a absolutely terrible shape, falling apart,The Covid restrictions are absurd, they let the people go into the book shop which is covered, but not in the cell’s building. We just walked around the island and that’s pretty much it, no entrance to anywhere, terrible experience

We went at the end of summer when the flies were pretty bad, the buildings were closed due to Covid, and the sun was blotted out from the mass fires of the northwest, which was obviously not the best time to go. But we see the prison has an interesting history and we will be making the trip back to get the stories and full experience. Also, to our surprise, there are so many pretty flowers, so that was an unexpected bonus!

Brilliant! The volunteers are knowledgeable and friendly and the island itself is such an interesting place to visit. I didnt think I was going to like an old jail - but it is so much more.Top 3 things to know1) It is steep. If you have difficulty walking up steep hills, take a ride from the bottom (where you get off the ferry).2) The audio tour is incredible - but you dont need to rush to get it. We stopped half way and watched a movie so, when we did get to the audio tour, the crowds had dispersed and it didnt take that long to pick up our headsets and get going. There is a lift available for people who cant access the stairs.3) The atmosphere is hard to describe. I really felt like I was walking in the footsteps of the inmates. The history is brought alive through some great narration by both past inmates and guards.MoreThere is a large gift store here and you get some stunning views of the bay, the Golden Gate Bridge and the city skyline.Definitely worth a visit!

I have been fortunate to visit Alcatraz Island twice (and hope additional visits in the future). Each visit was similar but unique. The ferry ride to the island is nice and provided great views of the city and bay. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The first visit included hearing a former prisoner speak about his life and his stay on the island. The second visit included an author who lived on the island when she was a kid. Her father was a guard.Once on the island, take your time and explore. There are great views and many areas of the island to see. The foliage is beautiful. The free audio tour, which is available in many languages, provided a lot of information. The audio tour is educations and gives many insights into the prisoner’s time at the facility as well as the guards life on the island. The National Park Service strongly recommends making advanced ticket reservations. We purchased our tickets approximately 90 days in advance. This eliminated the need to wait in line to purchase tickets and allowed us to schedule the specific day and time we wanted to visit during our trip. The ticket price includes the ferry transportation (provided by Alcatraz Cruises) and your time on the island.

After starting the audio tour, just follow the flow in the same sequence and itinerary to back in time is ready. Stories of escape attempts were amazing. And the stories of the inmates who were imprisoned here was scary!!When I walked around dark cells, couldnt imagine how scary it would be for prisoners. Alcatraz Island is located in San Francisco Bay, 1.25 miles (2.01 km) offshore from San Francisco, California, United States. The small island was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison, and a federal prison from 1934 until 21 March 1963. The water currents around the island were high at all times, which presumably decreased the chance of an inmate escaping. Beginning in November 1969, the island was occupied for more than 19 months by a group of Native Americans from San Francisco, who were part of a wave of Native American activism across the U.S., with public protests through the 1970s. In 1972, Alcatraz became part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area and received designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986.

I lived one of the best moments of my life here with a group of friends and my ex-girlfriend. Such a pity I lost all my pictures that I tooked that time. Also, it was much better when we came, because before there was many buildings you could come inside. Now, all the buildings are close and the main building have very restrict areas for you visit. But doesnt matter. Just the boat ride tour worths the whole trip!!!
