The zoo has REALLY cleaned up from what it was. It was great before, but now, WOW! The new owners and staff have done a great job with it. Very family friendly. The staff are super friendly and helpful. They are very happy to answer questions and are knowledgeable about the animals. If you haven’t seen it in the recent months, go check it out! Especially this month, there are some family activities like Boo at the Zoo with fun activities for the kiddos!

Great experience with this zoo. I was very impressed by the large number of animals present. Some exhibits had multiple animals inside which was interesting. Late morning the animals throughout the place were very active and moving around. The camel was asleep the whole time though. The monkeys were all awake. The tortoises and birds which are together in a large round enclosure were moving around. Watching the lions and tigers being fed lunch was a great experience as well. The petting zoo had a lot of animals present as well and the animals there were very friendly. The zoo grounds and area inside the cages all appeared clean as well. The zoo facility is not in great condition at all but again it is clean and maintained and the animals looked happy and healthy. I suppose my experience may have been different had all of the animals been sleeping during my visit, but overall I found this to be great, well above my expectations. Definitely would recommend, at least for a late morning/lunchtime visit when the animals are active.

Okay, here is the skinny. If you have children, they have a petting zoo. You cant pet the tigers though. They have bigger tigers than the other zoo and you get closer to them! The monkeys were enjoying their air conditioning and didnt come out because I was there in the heat of the day, but the big cats are the main attraction. It is smaller but you wont have to endure the every one complaining about all the walking. Enjoy the pictures. The big tiger kept pace with me as he walked the fence. You cant have the same experience with a picture. The need your patronage to keep the animals fed. I am sure the animals were well fed because the Tiger had part of an uneaten steak in his area.

Very nice visitor experience. Staff knowledgeable friendly down to earth. Animals look super healthy. One can get quite close to the animals which is nice. There is also a huge petting zoo which was great. Animals were active with plenty of personality. Great place to go with a friend or with family or just to get away. All open air plenty of space. Perfect for these covid-19 times. Worth every penny to support the animals. Also present was a Barbary lion, very rare . Believe zoo support its breeding and conservation effort.

The zoo inside is good for families. Some animals, like tiger and jaguar are always sleeping. Bears are always fighting with each other. Not many people are visiting the zoo in the covid19 situation. But the only concern from us is that the zoo is located in Oakland, which is not a safe place for families to drive through.

It was hard for my almost 3 yr. old to make out what or where the animals were behind their fenced cages. The only things she was able to enjoy was the BIG inflatable slide. The little plastic playgrounds they set up around the zoo were NOT SAFE AT ALL!!! I would not recommend any toddlers to play on them, its an accident waiting to happen. The rubber mat squares were not tightly placed together which left cracks big enough for my adult feet to go thru & trip over. The mats barely had enough clearance to fall on at the end of the slide...and the slide went down super fast & my daughter had a little bit of a rug burn on both her palms. If my husband wasnt at the end of the slide (located by the goats/sheep) our daughter would of flew over passed the mats that are suppose to protect her. In my opinion make sure your little ones are prepared & please have a parent at the end of the slide.

Small zoo. Centered around a Lemur and Lamb feeding area with covered individual tables to relax in the shade. Fun especially for younger children. Buckets of food are available in the gift shop from the friendly staff. For its limited size, they have a good variety of animals, from monkeys and birds, to a couple of big cats. Nicely maintained and set up. Gift shop gets a bit cramped (for current standards with all the Covid distancing required these days) as it functions as gift shop and entryway to the zoo area simultaneously.

Okay so its a road side zoo, and this type of zoo is notorious for animal neglect. BUT , before you judge they are under new ownership trying to improve the quality of life for the amimals they have there. That being said, its small and a work in progress. But please support their mission to make this a better place for visitors and the animals. Definitely worth your time. Staff were very nice.

I went there with a group of kids, the reptiles where cool, but the large animals like lions not too much, they looked sad and depressing in such small cages! Why own them if you can’t properly give them the space they need. Was extremely disappointed this last visit. I have been purchasing the yearly pass for about 5 years now. I have always been given a discount on gift shop merchandise as well as feed for the petting zoo. Well not this time I was denied any kind of discount on anything. Not only that but the girl behind the register was for lack of a better word ignorant and possibly illiterate. She did not know anything that I inquired about. She also could not spell simple words. If this is the kind of service that the zoo thinks of being adequate, I nor my family will not be returning in the future. How sad.

This place is a little sad. Small zoo with small cages. But the animals are well cared for. Most are rescues or donated from owners who can no longer care for them. They are building larger enclosures. Trying to improve the lives of the animals but it operates on donations only so money is an issue.Ive been there while volunteers were feeding and cleaning. Its obvious the love and knowledge they have of the animals they think of as friends. Its a good place. Just needs the support of the public to give them the means to continue to improve. This little zoo boast large species such as lions and tigers. Also porcupines, hyena, camel, monkeys, sulcotta tortoises, and wallabys. There is a petting area with goats, miniature cattle, sheep and others. You can buy food to feed them. They are asking for donations of pet houses, carriers and other items. Cash is also great. They are doing a good thing and need some help.

I went here about a year ago, and finally decided to share my experience. It was heartbreaking. Zoos in general are not great but at least most of them have comfortable environments for animals to live in, and provide an educational experience. This is not the case with the Sierra Safari Zoo. Small, dirt enclosures with little shade and little greenery. All the animals were asleep or trying to avoid the blazing sun. From the review below, it seems this may be changing in the future, but my one star will remain until I learn that the animals are being properly taken care of. The animals should be moved to other zoos and given a better quality of life if possible. If not, I hope the new caretakers change this zoo and create a beautiful environment for these animals. I hope they get a better marketing campaign so that people will donate more money, and I hope they try their absolute hardest to create a better experience for the animals and the visitors. Maybe hire a zoo consultant or something, because what was happening when I went there was not even close to being ok. Not even close.

But if you dont go walking threw the deer area to the other fences, you probly wont see the Hyenas, or the black panther, or the camels. This zoo need more vistors, cause its the enter fees that pay for keep, food, repairs, and property. This zoo is terrible! The animals have the smallest cages and basically no shade. It gets hot in the summers, and animals that dont do well with heat are lucky to have one tree. This zoo makes me and a bunch of others super sad when looking at the animals. They have no room to really even stretch. It has room, and is a super cool place. But this place makes family friends cry whenever they go. This zoo is basically a prison to the animals. The animals are basically living in tupperwares. It disappoints me severely.

I didnt have any big expectations going in. When you arrive you walk into a small gift shop and purchase your ticket. The employees were very nice. You cant see the Zoo from out front or while in gift shop. When I stepped out of the giftshop door I was greeted by some of the resident peacocks. Trust me, its NOT the San Diego Zoo. But I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of animals they had and how big it was. Toddlers will enjoy feeding and petting some of the animals and should be able to walk all the way through.

Really cool place and really close to home. Great for a spur of the moment activity with the kids. They kids loved it. Its small, so its easy for kids to walk and see all the animals without getting too tired. It was pretty hot when we went, but a lot of the path was shaded. I was going to bring the stroller, but Im glad I didnt. It would have been too difficult to maneuver on the dirt paths. The petting zoo was cool, but dont let your little children in by themselves with the bucket of food. Those deer arent shy! And pretty strong. And definitely avoid open toe shoes. Unfortunately, my youngest had an allergic reaction and we had to cut our visit short. Overall though, we all had a good time.
