Theatre 80 rocks!!! Been hitting whatever show I can--we can (as they also have family events, etc.)--for what feels like ever. Such immense hospitality! The staff, the ambiance, the electric charge associated with raw talent hitting the East Village and bringing to whole place to even great heights of total ALIVE-nessssssss!!! Really, really love and appreciate this place !

One the best NYC gems around! Been here since Prohibition and was an actual speakeasy too! How NY can you get! When I was a kid I used to cut school to see b/w films here, dont tell my mom heehee.I still go here, the bar is fantastic and affordable and serves absinthe the correct classic way! Sometimes there is wonderful live music with violin and such at the bar.The staff is brilliant and sweet and the owner & his wife have more stories and charm than you can ever imagine! Still family owned. The theater has a sweet NY charm, no bad seat in the house for view and comfort too! There is so much history here they even have a gangster museum! I love to support classic real NYC!

Very tiny seats and a very odd cast of characters working here. All desperate for attention in their own way.I just saw We Are The Tigers and I wasn’t sure if the theater workers thought that they were part of the show. Also, pretty songs and voices but lose that intermission and fix the story.Anyway! Onward.

This is the location of the William Barnacle Tavern - a very cool old bar tucked away amid the hustle on St. Marks. With a functioning theater in the back and a rich history as a speakeasy, this place is low key and old school. They have an array of absinthe and serve it traditionally (sugar cube, dripping water, the works).

An historical building from early 1920s the prohibition time Original American Gangsters ran the streets and this very building has its very own stories to tell in its now a museum. Ironically A.A meetings were held on the top floor. And theres a great theatre below where they perform shows etc.

I dont know what is shown at Theater 80 St. Marks but I saw a special viewing of a gangster movie The Untouchables with Google. This place is old but so charming. They have a little bar and it feels like it is out of a movie. The seats are in good condition and there is definitely a lot of history in this place. Glad it has been well preserved.

Its the historic multi-purpose local theater ready to present screenings, concerts, dance/musicals, plays, panel discussions, and theres a long full speakeasy bar connected. From Youre a Good Man Charlie Brown through back projected movies to Bayside, the Saved by the Bell musical, and beyond, always a great place to go.

A big shout out to Theatre 80 and the producer of the Improvised Shakespeare Company. I came with a group of 19 people, but had 2 tickets accidentally booked for the day before. Guess what, they were super friendly and helpful and got us 2 seats in the booked out show. Outside the theater room, they had a bar available to get drinks while you wait for the movie to start or during the intermission. Depending on the season and time, they might have specialty drinks. I tried a their butter apple cider which was pretty good. It was sweet with a hint of butter flavor but Im glad it wasnt too buttery. They show a bunch of different films and you can signup online to see what they are playing.

I do enjoy various musicals and plays on Broadway- Ive seen a ton- but none of them has made me laugh as hard as this one! They certainly have a great cast right now too! The chemistry between them all is just awesome. You know you have a great cast when they are up there clearly having fun with each other and it shows.I have to say, John Duff who plays AC Slater was my absolute favorite! And a close second was Seth Blum who played Mr. Belding and various other characters like Tori.

Id say 99% of New Yorkers have never seen this place, and I think 100% of New Yorkers should. Theater 80 was a speakeasy during Prohibition, and supposedly the bootlegging tunnels are intact. The place is absolutely dripping with charm, from the old neon sign to the Graumans-style footprints out front and inside. The bar is wonderfully cozy, with $5 Guinness on draft, and the theater is spacious and comfortable. If youre an absinthe fan, give Theater 80 six stars out of five: they have seven brands of French absinthe (the Czech stuff, the owner tells me, has all the subtlety of a German jazz band), and they serve it the customary, fiery way. They range from $12 to $40 in price, with the cheapest Absinthe Ordinaire ($12) being delicious and more than a value coming with stories and charm from the owner (wholl allegedly take you on a bootleggers tour when the place slows down).Do yourself a favor and drop in. Before youre half through your first drink youll feel yourself sliding back to a wonderful time.

Acquaint yourself with old New York & visit a lovingly restored venue that boasts speakeasy roots. Theatre 80 isnt just a theater, there are cultural offerings like Irish dancing on Monday nights & Tapas Tuesdays. Youll find the the owner, Larkin, behind the bar. Ask him for a drink recommendation (absinthe fountain!) and to share his stories about the venue. Hes happy to oblige. There are snacks to snack while watching a movie (big boxes of M&Ms and Swedish Fish caught my eye) and the movie theater space can get a little chilly - bring a wrap or a sweater in case you are prone to chills. Its places like Theatre 80 that make me proud to be a New Yorker. I cant wait to visit again. Perhaps on my next visit Ill get to venture underground (Larkin offers tunnel tours on occasion) to see what lurks beneath Theatre 80.

Review №78

Small theater with super friendly staff. The best reason to come to an off-off Broadway theater is that you will find plenty of good places to eat that arent horrific tourist traps, the tickets are cheap AF, and the shows are just plain fun. The downside is that theres not one Desnudas to be found. Whomp whomp! If you get seats in the front row, be ready to practically be in the show. This seemed to be a problem for the elderly lady the night I was there. Needless to say, she did not make it back to that seat after intermission. Grandma could not hang.Theres a bar with an entrance right inside the theater lobby. There was a large contingent of drunk women as a result. But since the productions here tend to not be serious in any way, I think the drinking is encouraged... because the bar lets out right into the theater lobby! We went to see Full House - The Musical, which I think was still in previews. As a result there were some audio problems. The actors are micd, which for such a small space was surprisingly necessary. We were seated off to the left in the smaller of the two sections (see Seating Chart photo) and the view wasnt bad at all. But if you want to grope the cast when they come out to hug you, youre going to be crap out of luck on that far aisle. Because thats what you go to live theater for... to grope the cast. Yes.
