My favorite experience of our whole weekend in NYC. Shop at the Bookstore!!We did the tour of the Pub and then I read Orphan Train right after and it was just such a surreal experience. I loved the interactive part at the end of the tour as well. It was definitely an immersive experience and such an important reminder that we are a nation of immigrants. It’s amazing how people survived as they did, and this museum makes me so grateful to them. Great job everyone!!

Interesting museum and visits. We did both the shop life visit and a walking tour later the same day. Both were reasonably-priced and punctual, but unfortunately somewhat dry. The occasional injection of humour would have been welcomed, and, in my opinion, would have made both the visit and the walk more memorable.

Going to NYC every year and visiting magnificent museums, and attending great performances, you think that you will not be surprised, and yet, the tenement Museum was my great best surprise of my trip.Crossing the bring from Brooklyn, I stumbled in this intriguing museum. It is more like a living experience where guides take you thru a building sharing the stories of families that emigrated to this country and lived in that building.I found the tour very well done . Not at all a tourist destination where you feel like...ah treated with a little of disrespect “oh the tourists, the tourist in NY, but with a genuine desire to share the history of NY built by the immigrants that came and shaped this country.I will also mention that the store attached to the museum is very well designed, and has a good selection of books and well thought gifts. From books for children, to cards, to scarfs, there something for everybody. Off course, I have chosen to buy two books, one card, and a magnet. I also bought as a gift a cloth bag for my sister.

I highly recommend a visit to the tenement museum - a real piece of American history. There are several different tours covering various time periods (and therefore various immigrant waves). Amazing to see how early immigrants lived on the lower east side of New York. Many of these immigrants went on to great success. For a period of time most of the the clothes in the US were made in the lower east side. If you want to see what immigrants can offer or are just interested in the American experience this is a must see. I recommend buying tickets in advance online.

The ladies who cooked the meal were all great people and the professor who gave the lecture about the food of the area really knew his stuff. If you like American history and food you cant miss. Even if you dont go for a meal its worth a visit. The gift shop is great. The book selection was first rate.

Everything about the Tenement Museum depends on the guide helping to not only explain but engage the guest in what life must have been like. The tour guide for the Irish Immigrants tour contextualized how life must have been for this family. She (Yoshi) helped guide focused discussions about what we were seeing and helped us discover our own ideas of both how the family lived, the choices that were made within the context of that time and we were allowed to discuss how current day. immigrants are markedly similar. The Tenement Museum provides the scaffolding and the tour guide provided and helped our group explore the experience of the Tenement family.I had heard repeatedly this was a dont miss experience, yet since it opened Ive been to New York multiple times and just didnt get to this museum. Im so pleased I finally was able to get a tour and experience this museum. Most museums tend to be the, I saw that. This museum left me changed by engaging not just my sight, but also my experiences and I suspect my ancestors experiences. Thank you!!

Had not been here in over 15 years. Took my 8 year old daughter. First buy your tickets online. They have different experiences to tour and we got the last two for the Irish experience and for the day. This was 12pm for a 1:45 tour. The rest of the day was sold out. The history behind the neighborhood and building was enriching. For our Irish experience the museum had researched the Irish family living in the building at the time that the building was housing families. And was able to tell us their story. This really brought things home from my daughter because it was a real family and real experiences. Each room was made to look like a type of room with all the details like newspapers and trinkets which is missing many times in other historical tours I have been to. A must do

I was fortunate to have the chance to visit the Tenement Museum recently and had a wonderful experience. I took the Irish Outsiders tour with Jim and found her to be an exceptionally gifted educator. The tour used what is known about an Irish family that lived in one of the museums buildings in the 1800s as a departure point for an informative discussion of immigration, identity, urban planning, gender, and labour both historically and in the present.

Extremely expensive, I was excited as a history teacher to visit this museum. Then I found out the price, $27.00 per person per floor. There are four floors. For a total of $108.00 per person. $216.00 for both my wife and I. Did I mention that I was a teacher, this price was just too much for me. Imagine I teach about the immigrant experience each year and I cannot afford to visit a museum on the subject.

An interesting take on a museum. There’s a gift shop/ticket office and lecture theatre on the corner plot but this serves as a jump-off point for guided tours of the preserved tenement on orchard street. You are met and guided around the property on themed tours that last about an hour. It’s a great way to experience and understand the history of the tenement, its residents and New York. Have no fear that the tour will be dry. It passes really quickly and the animated guides are very engaging and there’s plenty of time for questions. Given the small, dense space it’s somehow appropriate to experience the space as a group of 10 people in the small rooms. This wasn’t on the top of my list (it’s taken a dozen or more New York visits to ‘get round’ to the visit - I would recommend to others that they don’t wait as long as I did!People who find stairs a challenge should check with the museum about arrangements. Some tours involve stairs up to the top floor.

The museum is telling a good and important story about immigrants. There are many different tours offered. The tours are very focused and, therefore, very limited. This was a very unique museum experience since unlike most museums where you go to see the exhibits, this one was more about the building itself and the historical memory it aims to preserve. I give it 4 stars because if Im being completely honest, I felt that the tour was a bit overpriced and dry, and it is inconvenient that you can only go in if you make prior reservations online (which I was unaware of the first time I stopped by so my friends and I had to come back). The history of New York immigration is fascinating though, and now more than ever, I think an important one to be learning about.

This has been on my NYC list for a while. I’m so glad I went. This place gave me a further appreciation for the people and history of this magnificent city—with its rich diversity, immigration, resilience, and ultimately of acceptance—through an engaging learning experience. This is not the typical museum walkabout, not like The Met, as this involves tours and semi-interactive tours in tenements and shops as they were in the early to mid 1900s.I recommend visiting their website to learn more about the tours ranging from 1-2 hours. You can just show up or buy tickets in advance if you want to plan your time to watch the 40 minute documentary of life in the Lower East side and early immigrants before your tour begins. To give you an idea, we arrived at 1pm on a Friday. There was a very short line for tickets at the gift shop. From a selection of tours on the tv screens, we decided to take the 1 hour long Hard Life tour at 2pm and watched the documentary while we waited for the tour to start. A really worthwhile project to preserve an old tenement building and great experience to see it in the flesh. The only way to see it however is via one of five separate and individually priced tours to different rooms in the buildings. The scope of what you get to see in the building on a single tour is very small, the informational content of the tour (entirely spoken by a guide) is lightweight at best. Substantially overpriced, even by NYC standards.

Unwelming tours, standard knowledge what everybody knows already, little historical consistency (maybe we were unlucky with our tour guides), school girls on our tour knew more details about the history than the guides. Tour guides might be OK for younger school classes, not for adults who read books about history. What happened to the tenement building between 1935 and 1985? Several times asked never answered, remained a mystery... Loved the walk through but no guide needed unless a more than obvious and basic knowledge is presented. More sophistication and better presentations are needed.

Museum design is something I care a great deal about, and they knocked it out of the park here. The incredible blend of preservation vs. restoration, the incredible docent guide storytellers, the fact that youre INSIDE history instead of looking at it behind velvet ropes and glare-free museum glass.....THIS is the kind of museum I dream of.Being able to sit inside one of the incredibly preserved rooms while the docent spins a yarn about a seamstress was fantastic. Since the tours only focus on a handful of rooms centered around different story lines, you could easily go a half dozen or more times and get an entirely different experience.Everything about it from beginning to end was very emotionally evocative. Having been a docent myself at film and railroad museums in the past, this kind of experience feels right at home. Absolutely recommend. Such an interesting tour! I did the shop life tour with Daryl and he was a fantastic tour guide. The tour went through a tenement beer hall. Cant wait to go back for another type of tour.

My wife and I ditched the kids for a getaway to NYC and this was our last stop before we headed back home. It did not disappoint. We did the Irish Outsiders tour and it really opened our eyes to the conditions of late 1800s New York.In short, it was incredible and I now want to do the rest of the tours to gain a wider understanding of the Lower East Side (and New York City in general) through the years.VISIT THE TENEMENT MUSEUM! It is absolutely worth it.
