My fiance and I went during the Gumbo festival and it was amazing. The vendors were super friendly and helpful. The gumbo was super delicious and the flavors were top notch. The live brass bands were delightful and the atmosphere was warm. The local street art and the Louie Armstrong statue was beautiful. Go, go, go!

Today’s Congo Square is actually a few blocks south of where the historical Congo Square was located (it’s covered by houses now). However, this is a nice open square that was set aside by the city to honor and remember the practitioners of animist religions during the early colonial days of New Orleans (and even a little before that). It’s a quiet park with a sign to commemorate the history of Congo Square. If you read the old accounts of the crazy religious dances held by the slaves from Santo Domingo and Africa in the 1700s, you’ll be amazed it happened in the same place!

The statues were beautiful, the park was clean and well taken care of and it was nice and quiet despite the several tours that were going through at the time. Its a beautiful site and I highly recommend stopping by and taking a walk through the park.

Great place in the daytime...not sure about visiting in the dark. We used to visit this place every year as it was the start and end for the Red Dress Run. Now, we walk past it on the way to the new starting point at Crescent Park. This park is always lively during the day and we feel safe walking thru it. At night, there are just too many indigent people laying around, used needles, etc., and not enough lighting and security so it doesnt feel safe.

Sunday afternoons, starting at 3PM, a most colorful mix of people get together for a drum and percussion event, the likes of which you arent likely to encounter in the heartland, if you know what I mean. Bigger musical events held there now and then as well, and the meaningful history is alone worth the price of admission (which is free), but please notice and appreciate the grand trees while youre there

Beautiful park. You get some history of New Orleans along with beautiful nature in the middle of the city. Benches could use a good painting and they should probably just remove the water fountains because they were gross with mold and moss growing in them. I would definitely visit this place if you are interested in the history of this beautiful city.

Connected to Louis Armstrongs Park, the glorious expanding wise, old, live oaks hold the secrets of centuries gone by that fold into the present, where Sundays were/are a day of celebration, assimilation, and congregation. A true African American historical site actively honored today is worth a sit under its sprawling secret keepers!

So my wife and I had the pleasure of visiting Congo Square in Louis Armstrong Park in New Orleans. The Congo Square preservation Society put on a very good drum show that included a very valuable history lesson. I must say we were very impressed and we learned a lot from them we made a contribution to them to further the enrichment of the culture down there in New Orleans especially at Congo Square we were very appreciative of our visit there.

I was out there for the festival for 420. It was a very nice place. Beautiful statues and senery for taking pictures, as A LOT of ppl were doing. The fountain wasnt very clean. I could imagine that would be hard to keep it clean. Drove around for parking. There was a sign for $15 cash parking next to the entrance, so we opt to park there. Stopped at the guard booth to see about paying the $15. The security officer yelled out of the window that it was actually free to park. As we were pulling off, she said People keeping stop asking bout parking, very loudly. Well maam, there is a SIGN by the STREET about PAYING FOR PARKING. We were just trying to follow the rules. Lacking in customer service skills, I see.

What a historical place for everyone to visit. However the overall park needs to be kept up and in better condition. Also the significance of the relationship to the slave/Black holocaust, the African American art form of jazz and the importance of community needs to be explained to tourist and passerbys in detail. It would give a true perspective of American history.

The annual New World Rhythms Festival on March 3rd-4th was a wonderful family-friendly event. Performances showcased included traditional African dancing and drumming, New Orleans jazz bands, and a school band competition. The variety of vendors, the big stage, and FREE admission enhanced the cultural experience. Next year, bring a lawn chair and umbrella for some shade, dress in African or other cultural garb, support the vendors, enjoy the performances, and have FUN!

I love all the History about this place, I found it miss something. You know, more information, more music, an open sky museum, this should be the place where we get to know everything. But, as many underlined, if you close your eyes, you can feel the spirits all around.

Not a lot to see if there isnt an event going on - there is a big open space where the slaves used to gather, now its a brick courtyard with some statues around. You can learn about local history by reading some of them. The lake was kind-of dirty. I didnt stay long, and its a bit of a walk. Our Air BNB host told us we have no need to go North of Rampart, so I did not wander any further out of the Quarter.
