This arch is probably one of the best known landmarks in the city of Hartford. The state capitol is right down the street and the Arch sits next to scenic Bushnell Park.I usually set up right near here to watch parades, I.E., the St. Patricks Day Parade. You can walk by or drive through it.Either way, when you see this structure, you know you are in the capitol city (Hartford).
Very cool. First permanent triumphal arch in America! Very unique piece of historic and insider tip. Come on Thursday’s (May - October) at noon for a free tour!
Eye-catching structure welcoming visitors to Bushnell Park and the State Capitol. I was curious about its history so I checked the park website and learned that:The arch was dedicated on September 17, 1886... to honor the 4,000 Hartford citizens who served in the Civil War, and the 400 who died for the Union... Be sure to read the bronze plaque under the freed slave which honors the 128 African American residents of Hartford who fought for the Union...This Gothic monument is made of brownstone from Portland, Connecticut, and cost about $60,000 (from the city treasury) to build.
Very nice park! Lovely to take a stroll around! Great views of the capital. A little piece of history!
Yup. Its an arch. Dont go out of your way to see it. Not worth your time.
The tour was very informative and the view was pretty!
An amazing stone arch monument, unexpected, over the drive through street running through Bushnell Park not far from downtown and the state Capitol building. Worth a drive or stroll to get photos of this arch.
Historic, iconic.
Love this tribute to our history.
