Fascinating exhibits, which is focused on Connecticut’s government, military and industrial history, trace the growth of our state and its role in the development of the nation. The collections include portraits of 72 Governors of Connecticut, American coins from as early as the 17th-century and Colt firearms.Interestingly, the 231 Capitol Avenue residence, which is located across the Connecticut State Capitol, is made up of Connecticut Supreme Court, State Library, and Museum of Connecticut History.

Small , but the history of the State of Connecticut is all there. Original State Charter of 1639 etc. And the display of Colt firearms is very impressive.

A vast space with artifacts and portraits of governors. This seemed to be a tired repository of old stuff. It needs to be updated with video, historical connections and someone to interpret. I’m sure it’s a victim of budget cuts since its government. Perhaps some nonprofit could take it on?

This is a great place that shows very interesting history of the state of Conn. The charter and the story of the charter oak was explained and is fascinating. There are all kinds of historical artifacts and there is a wonderful gun collection and other industrial, war related, and other historical information. The building is very beautiful. It is free!!!

This is the smallest state museum Ive seen and the most in need of a budget infusion. Times are tough, no one wants to pay for educational places. Still, in their exhibit on Colt firearms, one of the typed tags had an incorrect word crossed out and rewritten.

Small museum that can be visited in under an hour. Admission is free. The exhibitions are a loose collection of local items and memorabilia. While interesting when seen individually, they lacked the cohesive story and narrative expected of a history museum. Also missing are the exhibitions that would fill the gap and allow visitors to piece together a story. Some serious curatorial work is definitely in order. The museum is in an elegant building that also houses a public library and courthouse. Check them out as they are quite beautiful and picture-worthy.

This museum shares a building with the supreme court and Library, so if you are just looking for a museum you might miss it, also on a Saturday enter by the rear of the building. The museum has many artifacts and some civil war stuff in side rooms to the main room.I am not a gun nut but found the large collection of Colt weopons very interesting, this area must have been the gun production capital of usa.the main attraction will be the CT constitution and story of the charter tree worth visiting the library and if Saturday take a look into the Supreme court. It is a bit dated and if anyone from Hartford reads this , some cases need a clean so that you can see the contents.plan about 1 hour here, parking is also free around the area on a saturday
