The Mark Twain house is a perfect little stop if you’re walking around downtown Hartford and looking for some unique history and back story into some of your favorite childhood books. We booked a tour, which is preceded with a brief video. We came to learn that Mark Twain (born Samuel Langhorne Clemens) leaned heavily on his memories growing up, putting his life into his books. He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, a small frontier village on the banks of the Mississippi River, and after some extensive traveling and writing, he built this large house here in CT.The house itself is three stories and the museum sits on the first floor. The whole tour plus a quick walk around the grounds took us a little under two hours. Highly recommended!

The house is really beautiful. It can only be accessed through their guided tour, but it is worth the price. The tour starts with the living space of the Clemens and ended with the servant quarter. We learn about the history of the building as a whole, as well as history related to each room we visited. Due to covid-19, they have limited the number of people per tour, and social distancing was enforced in each area with circle markings for each party.

The Mark Twain House & Museum is a definite must see and visit attraction of Hartford, Connecticut!!!The historic home of Mark Twain, one of America’s most respected and renowned storyteller is only accessible through guided tours. In October of 2020, my wife and I had the pleasure of visiting the Mark Twain House & Museum and we absolutely enjoyed our tour experience!!!We learned a great deal about the history of Mark Twain‘s House, Twain & his family, and the staff that helped manage and care for the home.We also viewed a few furnishings owned by the Twain family and visited the room that Twain used to write his famous Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn stories. My wife and I definitely owe a great deal of thanks and appreciation to George, our tour guide.George made sure that our tour of the Mark Twain House & Museum was an absolute fun and worthwhile experience!!!

What a wonderful landmark and historical gem! The museum as well as the house are well worth the trip as you will be both inspired and challenged by the great Samuel L. Clemons! One draw back was the staff whereas they were pithy and the tour guide we had although full of knowledge was socially awkward. If you either love Mark Twain or have interest in American history do not miss this!!!!

A truly awesome experience to see this beautiful home where Sam Clemens and family spent 17 joyful years. This was the author’s home during the most successful and prolific period of his fascinating career. It’s wonderful to see the space in which his daughters were raised and where he wrote some of his most beloved works including Adventures of Huck Finn, The Prince and the Pauper. It’s an extraordinary example of the architecture and decor of the time as well. Our tour guide, Joan, was kind, patient, knowledgeable and fun! She did a wonderful job of sharing the history of the home and the time sped by.The pandemic precautions in place in August 2020 are excellent, tours are limited to 5 people, masks are required, hand sanitizer is widely available, and social distancing is possible. It seems that additional air circulating devices have been added to the space to ensure sufficient air movement.Highly highly recommend a visit.

Even without all that the Mark Twain House & Museum does, this would still be a destination. This is the place where one of Americas seminal novels was written, and the house would be noteworthy were it only for that. However, the museum goes well above and beyond a simple step back into history. We attended on educator day, and aside from bands that played with minimal intermission, there were excellent crafts activities for children, character actors portraying a wide range of both real (Twain, Livy) and imagined (Tom Sawyer, Becky Thatcher) characters, and a host of other activities (notably, a robotic frog racing contest inspired by The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County). Beyond this, the quality of the tour is fantastic. We toured with Livy, and she made the literature really come alive for everyone in the group. If you have any interest in Twain, this destination should be at the top of your list.

We had to fly out the next morning. It was our one chance to see this and they would do NOTHING to accommodate us. I mean you always have options but they just didnt care.Further more their website is awful! Disastrous. So difficult to use. Why would I book Saturday night when I had already booked our flights? We had to be in Hartford for work.I just am so disappointed in the staff. They should have made an exception and helped us out. Its everyone going to use COVID as an excuse till the end of time? We will never be back I dont believe... It ruined our night

For so many reasons this home Twain wrote so many of his great works is a must visit if youre in the Northeast and appreciate his contribution to what we know of American Literature. The home is special as he has said, it has an energy that goes beyond the architecture. It is a heritage memorial that deserves your time and support. Remember to enter the home as if you were an honored guest invited to spend an evening with Sam, Livy and his three daughters. The tour guide is very entertaining and takes to every corner of the house with the stories related to each member of the family. I absolutely loved the tour and it was so great to actually visit the place that was shaped by the vision of this phenomenal writer. Even though the exhibition that you can visit before entering the house, is interesting, it is the house itself that is really overwhelming. Mark Twain was a unique individual and his home expresses that unique feeling for adventure and travel. Every detail was thoughtfully attended to. The new museum building is exquisite with plenty of free parking. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and are shared with the Harriet Beecher Stowe house and a third house belonging to Stowers niece who had the vision to preserve the houses and the grounds for future generations. Well worth the trip to see these gorgeous homes and to learn about M. Twain and H.Beecher Stowe. Easy to get to just down the street from the off ramp of I84. It is also said to be haunted by his daughter Susan who died there as a young woman. They give candlelight tours and for an additional $5 you can do the tour which includes the basement. Around Halloween they also do special night tours which sell out quickly so get your tickets early. Very interesting historical place.

The Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford, Connecticut, was the home of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) and his family from 1874 to 1891. It was designed by Edward Tuckerman Potter and built in the American High Gothic style. Clemens biographer Justin Kaplan has called it part steamboat, part medieval fortress and part cuckoo clock.Clemens wrote many of his best-known works while living there, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Prince and the Pauper, Life on the Mississippi, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, A Tramp Abroad, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthurs Court.Poor financial investments prompted the Clemens family to move to Europe in 1891. The Panic of 1893 further threatened their financial stability, and Clemens, his wife Olivia, and their middle daughter, Clara, spent the year 1895-96 traveling so that he could lecture and earn the money to pay off their debts. He recounted the trip in Following the Equator (1897). Their other two daughters, Susy and Jean, had stayed behind during this time, and Susy died at home on August 18, 1896 of spinal meningitis before the family could be reunited. They could not bring themselves to reside in the house after this tragedy and spent most of their remaining years living abroad. They sold the house in 1903.The building later functioned as a school, an apartment building, and a public library branch. In 1929, it was rescued from possible demolition and put under the care of the newly formed non-profit group Mark Twain Memorial. The building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1962. A restoration effort led to its being opened as a house museum in 1974. In 2003, a multimillion-dollar, LEED-certified visitors center was built that included a museum dedicated to showcasing Twains life and work. The house faced serious financial trouble in 2008 due partly to construction cost overruns related to the new visitors center, but the museum was helped through publicity about their plight, quick reaction from the state of Connecticut, corporations, and other donors, and a benefit performance organized by writers. Since that time, the museum has reported improved financial conditions, though the recovery was marred by the 2010 discovery of a million-dollar embezzlement by the museums comptroller, who pleaded guilty and served a jail term. The museum claimed record-setting attendance levels in 2012. It has featured events such as celebrity appearances by Stephen King, Judy Blume, John Grisham, and others; it has also sponsored writing programs and awards. Also in 2012, the Mark Twain House was named one of the Ten Best Historic Homes in the world in The Ten Best of Everything, a National Geographic Books publication.

Very very interesting to see the home of Mark Twain and to hear about his home life whilst In it. The architecture is quite different, innovative and at times equally as beautifully charming as it is quirky. The interior design, the wall/ceiling stenciling in particular are worthy of an entire book. Our young guide, Ben, was absolutely brilliant, well spoken, knowledgeable on many aspects of Twains life and home. He alone made the tour come alive. Of course, there is an extensive fascinating museum before consisting of wonderful displays and films which are on the first floor. Also on the first floor is a fabulously fun bookstore which is a must-see. To arrive to the second floor there is both an elevator and a stunning set of new stairs. There is a bright and airy Cafe with sandwiches, yogurt, cookies, coffee, teas and cold drinks. Seating indoors and out in a lovely garden which leads to the Twain Mansion. NOTE: The Harriet Beecher Stowe Mansion is right on the same lot and MUST be seen immediately after. [ We saw it right after looking at the Twain house, then went back to Mark Twain Museum to finish looking at exhibits in 1st FL and buy goodies in the Bookstore. ]

You cant explore freely, absolutely no touching because items in the house do not belong to the museum, and much of the house was restored/recreated as close as possible using photos because it was sold and items were auctioned after Twains bankruptcy.
