What an amazing little Easter egg. We had not planned on stopping at the Mining Museum, but after a couple recommendations we made the 5 min excursion off I40 to the museum. While not the largest museum, it was jam packed with information, both audio and visual, and hometown charm that makes the experience. All the staff was friendly and informative and the exhibit even kept our 11 year old entertained and engaged. After the self guided tour I had many questions which were answered by two gentlemen with extensive experience in the field. These aren’t just museum curators, these are experts in their field with many years of experience. Five star experience, do not pass up the opportunity if you have it.

Don’t Miss this place, This is truly a hidden gem.I’m so glad we found this place! Super interesting and the folks here are so friendly, we met “Jack Farley” a Local Retired Uranium Miner who worked the mines for over 40 years and chatted with him for about half an hour plus they have an underground replica of the Uranium Mine below the Museum, Super Cool! We absolutely Loved it!

Wow, what a gem of a museum located off the beaten path in Grants, NM between Albuquerque and Gallup, NM. It is most absolutely interesting for having an underground self guided tour of a fully mocked up set of mining tunnels with all kinds of vintage mining equipment, appointed with the signage, power and lighting near exactly how it would look and feel within an actual uranium mine.

Very well done! The basement had a large model of an old mine you can walk through. The many rooms showed different areas of the mine, complete with railroad and ore cars. Well made and informative videos upstairs, wish I would have had more time to watch.

We have been to several mining Museums similar to this but this is one of the best ones we have been to. It was well displayed in the lower level where it was set up much the way the miners actually experienced their work days. It had displays of rocks, baskets, pottery as well as fossils found during the mining. What made it even better was the person selling tickets, Tammy, provided us with interesting additional information about the museum as well as great insight of things to do in the area. She was awesome.

Great little museum. Very informative and hands on. Gives a good feel of what it is like to work in a mine underground with explanations and stories told by recordings of real miners. I would think twice about going there is you are claustrophobic, but it is well lit and ventilated. My 12 and 5 -year-olds had a blast...

Absolutely worth the effort and the two or three dollars that they charged me as a Sr. Citizen. Going underground into a mock up of a uranium mine was really great. They actually built the mine first, with remnants from the real thing, and then built the museum building on top of the mine. Evidently most of the people who are there are volunteers and most actually worked the mines. The guy who was there when I was there was really very good. One of the best deals (if not the only deal) in Grants.

The museum itself has wonderful pieces, photo and video of mining and the area. When you go underground, each station depicts a different step in the uranium mining process, with a push button audio system which describes the details. And if you are really lucky, mining retiree Jack Farley will be there to act as a live tour guide. A Korean War veteran, Jack was a miner for 43 years and he really brings the history of mining to life. Learned a lot here, very enjoyable. to life.
