My general rule is to only give a review after visiting a place at least twice. If the first time is less than good, then I give it another chance. However, I can saw without pause or hesitation that the Colorado Railroad Museum is a 5 star location and absolutely worth your patronage. I will most certainly be back. While you could argue that a train museum is likely to be more geared towards children, I think what makes this location so great is that it caters to the young, and young at heart really seamlessly. From the absolutely impressive model train village in the basement (make sure to bring 2 quarters along!) to the absolute larger than life engines and cars on the 15 acre property, there really is a little something for everyone. And if you catch them at the right time of year you can even catch a live performance of The Polar Express. It was very clean and all well taken care of. All the staff and volunteers clearly love working there and given that we visited during the time of Covid, they didnt miss a bit.If youre going to visit, I would highly recommend early in the afternoon on a weekday. Enjoy!

We had a great time at the museum. We were a group of two grandparents, one mom, and two kids under two years old. Because of their age, the kids got the most out of the toy trains, and when the big train came into the lot. We really wish we could have ridden in a train, but that was only reserved for the weekends in September 2020. Staff was very friendly and their gift shop is great!

This was a great museum and I would visit again. The train ride gave some good history (unfortunately I went on a day that they were using a Diesel engine and some newer passenger cars) but the guide was very nice and was giving out the good information. He was able to give information on every piece of equipment on the 3 laps that the train did. It was cool to see historic and famous engines such as the 5771 and the 491. Being in Sacramento, I have access to a very good railroad museum but never have I once been able to go into the shops-meanwhile, here I can tour it by myself. The only problem I had here was the 3011, which is a favorite engine of mine, was in awful condition. It would nice to at least cosmetically restore it. Also there were wasps in some areas so I couldn’t go there, but still a great experience.

I just attended A Day out with Thomas. The event itself was very well done and my son was the happiest little guy ever with his love for trains. However, this review is because of the horrible customer service I received from Beth. I had purchased 4 tickets to the event, and I was unable to use a ticket. When I requested a refund the first response I received via email was that my request was denied because I did not provide a reason as to why I was requesting a refund. I thought that was odd, so I responded and said that I didn’t know I needed to provide a reason but that boyfriend broke up with me and therefore was not attending the event. The response was denied again with a different reason saying there were no exchanges or refunds. So I received two different answers as to my refund request on top of making me upset that I had to give a personal reason. So Thursday, I called the museum itself and explained this issue. The lady answering the phone took my name and number and said she would call me back with an answer. 15 mins later she returned my call and apologized for my experience but told me when I came for my ticketed time to pick my tickets up at Will Call and go inside and ask for Beth. She explicitly told me that a refund wouldn’t be given but that I would be offered some sort of compensation for my experience. I did exactly what she said. And Beth is who was inside. I handed her my ticket and begin to explain why I was there. She quickly took my tickets, turned and said “you missed your train time?...”. I said no, and proceeded to tell her why I was there and she cut me off saying there were no refunds or exchanges. I told her I was told to ask for her because I was promised compensation for my experience. I was so upset at the lack of customer service I just turned and left because it wasn’t worth the argument. If a business is going to try to make it right, this business 100% failed at that!

The only thing that would have made the experience better is if all trains were hands on or at least able to walk through. Really cool place to visit if you love trains. They aren’t skimpy with train cars/engines to look at and go inside, including the famous galloping goose and a rotary engine for clearing the tracks of snow that is quite the monster. On the lower level of the main depot they have a very large HO miniature train layout that fills the basement. There is also an O scale Alpine Railway layout outdoors (this is the largest of the miniature train sizes) as well as a full working train you can ride on which circles the property. The only downside is that these latter features aren’t available on weekdays and I found myself staring at an empty layout with no running trains. I thought I got my money’s worth, however, in being able to explore the full-size train cars on the property. A must-see for any train enthusiast.

This museum is a fun way to spend an afternoon. It was not very crowded so it was easy to walk around and enjoy really looking at all the trains. There were so many different trains from throughout history - it was amazing! Inside, there is an exhibit for kids (but as an adult, I enjoyed it too!) that went through the alphabet, explaining various historical facts or technical facts about trains. In the basement, there is an elaborate mini train exhibit that is amazing! Outside, you are free to roam and many of the trains allow you to get on them or in them so you can enjoy them from a different perspective. We spend about 90 minutes there and we would definitely visit again.

Loved the ability to freely roam the property with minimal restriction. Most railroad places go overboard on safety and restrictions to the point where it’s not fun and nearly pointless. Loved it! Complete with an HO layout downstairs. They were grilling up hot dogs. Plenty of place to wonder and look at the exhibitions. They built an authentic 1920s style roundhouse about 18 years ago and it looks nice. Also, all the out buildings are modeled after rail stations, etc. Make you feel like you are in the 1940s at a depot. There is also a garden railroad. Make a donation to help the fund more refurbishing on the exhibits. Oh, some exhibits are sufficiently restored that you can hold private events like a wedding party, company meeting, etc. Most impressive
