Nice environmental learning center on the edge of the PeeDee River. There are live turtles, snakes and an alligator named Fred there to observe and pet. There are also interactive displays and quite a few stuffed examples of local wildlife. There are maps and displays of the surrounding protected wetlands which lie between the PeeDee and Waccamaw rivers. There arent any walking trails at this location but the staff can direct you to the ones that are part of this beautiful area. I believe they have kayak tours that launch from here. If in the area you should stop in and check it out.
The volunteers were so informative and friendly with my group. I stopped in with nine people without calling ahead and they showed us everything from the river gallery to letting us hold their very friendly king snake. They were amazingly accomidating and knowledgeable, the facilities were beautiful, and my group had a great time visiting.
Beautiful Visitors Center with cool displays of local history and fauna. Extremely nice and helpful staff. A lovely view of the river at the top of a bluff, a short boardwalk and walking trail on site. For more extensive hiking trails travel to Conway, 15 miles north, at Waccamaw NWR-Cox Ferry Lake Recreation Area (although no public toilets or drinking water-plan ahead) with over 5 miles of tree covered walking trails, an awesome boardwalk over the swamp and a challenging bike trail through the woods, a catch/release fishing bridge and picnic tables at a pond off Gary Lake Blvd and a fishing pier and dock off W Cox Ferry Rd on Cox Ferry Lake adjacent to the Waccamaw River.
Extremely knowledgeable employees educate children and adults of all levels of scientific knowledge about the beautiful and important South Carolina river systems and the wildlife that live there.
Nice educational center. Wish they had more hiking trails and were open on the weekend rather than just M-F. Hours are not family friendly ...8-4:30 M-F.
A beautiful and clean place. A great place to get out in nature I would recommend this to people who wants to get out walk by the water walk in the woods be outside in nature.
Great employees! Loved the way the assisted my family and i. My daughter even got to take some snake skin home.we did the scavenger hunt. She is only 4 but its for 5+ and she dis great. She very much enjoyed it. The obly thing i wasnt too happy with is there isnt much wildlife you can see other than the ones in the cages. The web page made it seem as if you could see wild life on the trail other than birds squirells and raccoons. Also most pictures on the web site were stuffed animals not real. Kind of mis leading.
Its a very peaceful and tranquil environment.
Wonderful and educational! Volunteers are awesome
The Visitor Center is absolutely beautiful, and the Exhibit Hall entitled A Tale of Two Rivers shows a wealth of knowledge about the Waccamaw habits.
