One of the most serene and relaxing places in the area. Beautiful and eclectic garden composed of trees and plants that Captain Shinn found while sailing the world, and he brought back as seeds. The whole plot has a magical feeling and Im grateful that its been preserved and is so easily accessible

Small, quiet and off the main drag. Ive never been to the Arboretum, just to the small playground thats there. Its usually empty, or nearly so, so its relaxing for me to let my kids do their thing. There is, however, a gap in the fence that leads to a busy street (Peralta Blvd.) and Im not a huge fan of that. But for being within walking distance, its not a bad little park.

A piece of history in the suburbs, the Historic Shinn House & Arboretum in Fremont is a hidden gem. The Shinn family owned farmland. There are certain days and times when the home is open to visitors and tours. Check their schedule before you go. Admission was $5. It is a beautiful Victorian home and garden decked out for the holidays. My docent was informative. I got a good feel for life in the past. I saw a curling iron for womens hair and an ironing board and iron for chores. Everything was handmade so well back in the day. The furniture is finely crafted. There are many family quilts and clothes on display. I learned about hair art. It is much easier to understand American history if you see it in person.

We took the tour of the Shinn House with the volunteer/docent Judy Peterson. She gave us detailed explanations of the house, when & how it was built & extended, the people that loved there and how their lives must have been with the technological limits and cultural mores of those times. My kids loved it and its a great way to spark interest in the history of the Bay Area.

This is a lovely quiet place to walk around by yourself or with kids. The grounds are not very extensive, but there is a picnic table surrounded by grass, as well as several landscaped areas with different plants. The rose garden by the parking lot is beautiful, too. For people with kids, there is a small playground right across the street.

Lovely park with large Victorian home (house is only open for tours twice a month but grounds are open everyday) that is free to visit and free parking. There is a small Japanese garden, but the real attractions are finding the plaques on the large trees that are specimens from around the world. The australian fig is the most impressive with its massive root system, but dont miss going to the back of the property either and touching the cork oak trees. Very nice for a stroll, plus there is a large grassy area with a few picnic benches too.

I was referred by a friend to go see what a mature Bald Cypress looks like. There are two impressive specimens on the property. There are several other mature trees worth seeing. Including several large Cork Oaks and Illinois Pecans. But the most notable was a giant Magnolia with huge octopus-like roots. And there are many more under-story trees and shrubs worth seeing. Definitely worth checking out if youre in the neighborhood.

This is a tiny little park that is easy to miss. It is also one of the most photogenic spots in the Bay Area. As a photographer I frequently bring people there for all kinds of photo shoots and no matter what the weather is like you can walk away with fantastic photos. Just remember to bring a flash with you because most of the park is heavily shaded.
