They werent kidding. The short way up is only. 6 miles but its a steep trail and in some places youre climbing over rock. Good mobile coverage, #SafetyFirst. Great views when you get to the top. Nice easy walk down the backside, if you know what I mean. We saw several hawks swirling at the summit. Fat squirrels.
Well maintained and a beautiful view at the top. I love this trail BUT 99% of people werent wearing masks and some parts of the trail are nearly impossible to distance.
Beautiful, well maintained trail that is just challenging enough (if you dont hike all the time like me). The only problem was that hardly anyone on the trail was wearing masks even though its nearly impossible to social distance - I tried to let people pass by going off the trail, but it was harder in the steeper parts.
First time there with my two daughters and it was pretty amazing. Arrived a little after 1:00 and it wasnt too crowded for a Sunday. The three of us love to challenge ourselves and always take the more difficult routes. If youre like that then this would be a good one for you, I highly recommend this one in general anyways.
Very rewarding hike! Amazing view! Today, the trail was pretty dry. There are porta potties at the beginning of the Main Route trail, and there are two picnic tables a few hundred feet down the trail. Plenty of parking.Though the trail marker refers to this trail ad easy, it is somewhat strenuous, with increasing incline as there trail goes on. The end consists of series of steps and rough, rocky upward trail. It is just over two miles round trip on the Main Route trail. My four-year-old niece, who is sure-footed, got a bit tired but made it to the top easily.
This was an amazing hike that I will be doing again. We took the kids (ages 11-16) with us and choose which trail we wanted to take to the top. Lots of people also brought their dogs. Theres porta potty bathrooms in the parking lot at the bottom. There are a few different ways to go depending on how experienced you are with hiking. We went with the easiest middle trail. It was a bit of a steep start, but well worth it. Its about a 1.8 mile distance to the top of Spencers Butte on this trail. Do not forget to bring water of course. We brought a few snacks and had a little picnic at the top. There are many spots to get a good view and great pictures once you get to the top. I suggest getting an early start to beat the heat if you do this in the summer. Theres alot of spots to take a break along the way and it seems to always be busy with other hikers coming and going. If you havent hiked to the top you gotta get out there and check this out.
Great 360 view of the valley. Lots of nice little spots to sit away from the crowd and as you can see very friendly squirrels that love sunflower seeds. Use caution during the Summer months as there is an abundance of Poison Oak toward the peak of the butte. Stay on the trail and it is easily avoided.
One way is very difficult the other one is medium difficult The view is very good from the top The trails are well maintained
This place is awesome. There are a couple of trails to choose from. An easy one and a difficult one. Getting to the top can be physically demanding but once you are there it is extremely rewarding. The view is gorgeous. Try it out sometime.
Amazing 360 degree view!Dont stop, go all the way to the top!
By far a very fun and exciting experience.
Spencer Butte Trailhead is situated just south of Eugene in the hills. Just up Willamette Street the trailhead parking lot may look full however that doesnt mean you are even gonna see anyone on the trail. With several well groomed trails leading
Great scenery. Loved the hike up to the top. Dont take the short route unless you are physically very fit. Steep climb with not many handholds. Had to use both hands and feet to claw my way up. View from the top was worth it though.
Breathe taking view and great hike
Amazing view!! Nice trail. Challenging but doable!!
Good place to reflect in the Eugene area
Always a wonderful hike
There are different paths to the top of Spencer Butte. You can get up there by taking it easy or challenging yourself. Either way, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking View.
Its a popular well traveled trail. Ive hiked it in late summer and now winter, beautiful and fun both times. LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS at any of the trailheads.
The hike to the top is amazing and well worth the effort. The parking area however can be a bit sketchy. Never leave anything valuable in your car and dont let anyone see you put valuables in your trunk. I know several people who have had things stolen from their vehicle. Parking can be tight during popular times. Fortunately there is a bike rack available and the roads to the trailhead are good for bikes.
A gorgeous view awaits at the top. I do the climb up in about 35 minutes but Im a pretty heavy guy.
Gorgeous view. Go here
Great fairly quick hike. Up the steep side, hang out for a bit and run/jog down the other side and youll be done in under an hour. We try to beat our time up the steep side every hike. Oh, we also bring sunflower seeds for the squirrels.
One of my favorites
Beautiful. Best hiking in Eugene.
Nice place and good workout
Very nice set of trails. Can get busy on weekends but plenty of parking and plenty of room for all the hikers. The hardest part is finding the turn off the main road. The sign is not very big. Watch your Google maps directions.
The shorter trail is shorter than the long way around and the sign says difficult. It was beyond difficult for this 56 year old woman and Im in pretty good shape. Killed my knees. I didnt make it all the way to the top. I couldnt climb through the last 75 or so of rocks.
Was good. Friendly peeps on the way all but some creeper out in the bushes freaking out and chanting
Always a good hike with good views!
Very moderate climb and beautiful view
Fantastic views for such a short hike
Great trails and views! 2 main trails, one moderate, the other challenging!
Close in town hike to great views of Eugene/Springfield and Willamette valley.
Busy, but great for all ages. Hike is steep but doable
Nicely maintained Trail. Summit is much easier to reach now that a stone stairway has been put in at the top. Was quite treacherous a few years ago. All level of hikers go on this pass...runners, people with small children, lots of dogs...There are several different areas around Spencer to park and go up. Some of them have toilets...some do not.
A beautiful view and and amazing hike!
The views were beautiful, but the hike is strenuous. Wear good hiking shoes. No handrails in some of the steepest parts.
This is one of the best places to hike and sometimes when you get to the top there will be squirrels!
We wanted to overlook Eugene. So we took one of the longer trails and started from Martin St. From there youll walk about 1.5 hours to the top of Spencer Butte. Of course, this is also a great trail for running. The last part you will come out of the shade of the huge trees. Bring water and clothes if the wind is blowing it can get pretty chilly up there. The squirrels are aggressively attacking your food.
Love this hike! Such a beautiful view from the summit and a great shaded hike on the way up. My favorite place to hike in Eugene. Both trails are a lot of fun.
Beautiful hike. Stunning views from the top. Will do again.
Great quick hike up to a glorious 360 degree view of the city of Eugene and surrounding areas, and the Cascade Range to the east. Dont expect solitude at the top, though. It is generally full of people, and high schoolers tend to bump their music up there. But there are lots of secluded rocky areas surrounding the summit where you can find a spot to yourself to sit for a while. Dogs are welcome here.
Fun hike up with great views of Sisters, Jefferson, Three Finger Jack, and even a bit of Broken Top was visible. It was busy though and the lot was full so I parked on Glenfiddich.
Trail is rated easy but Id call it moderate at least. Little more than a mile but lots of elevation loss/gain.
Such a beautiful hike the top is definitely worth it!
This is part of Eugenes natural beauty, and promotes healthy activity.
Absolutley beautiful and simple hike up a decent slope.
A great Eugene jewel! A great place to get out in nature and get your hike on! Very nice trail and the views are great!
Great local spot to hike up and look down upon Eugene. Its well known, so expect the masses when You get to the top. But sometimes its nice and mellow with a small number of people.Regardless of the people, they are usually friendly.
Main parking lot with two summit trails, as well as connector access to the Ridgeline system through old growth Douglas fir. The gem of Eugene.
Close to town. Not to many people. Beautiful views.
Solid views, quick and steep to the top, would do it again in a heart beat
Loved the hike, its been along time. Make sure you know what poison oak looks like,. Enjoy the trail and be courteous and take your time
A great trail for hikers of all levels and ages! Definitely a place to visit when in Eugene
Scenic hike that is not too difficult. Spectacular view!
This is a great hike and the view at the top is amazing! We will do this one again!
Fantastic hike. Basically right in the city.
Its beautiful and a great hike!
Great place to wear a 30lb toddler!
The view was well worth the hike up
Hike to the top and you will love the view! Do it!
Gorgeous and challenging hike towards the top. We did the harder and shorter trail! Its a good work out with amazing views at the top! Great local hike for Eugene!
Great trail! Hike or run it!
Love this trail for both myself, my kids, AND my dog!
A beautiful view from the top!
Love looking down on town
Definitely worth the trek up to the top.
Pretty cool little hike/run to a nice little 360° viewpoint at the top. Always people up there. As someone who worked professionally managing trails, I can see some work that needs to be done and hazards. A trail with this volume in a city like Eugene should have permanent bathrooms. Also railing is busted at entrance from downed trees. I observed at least one very dangerous leaning, rotten tree that presents a major hazard to hikers. Trail needs a tree hazard assessment. Nice rock work towards the top.
Great hike, great views
Fun for a quick hike.
I thought I was going to die hiking it... but in a good way.
Loved the trail. For those out of shape I recommend to go slow. The view is fantastic!
Fun trails, beautiful scenery.
Stairs at the summit get a bit tough, views worth it though
Its like wooooooooooow
Favorite place to take early morning walk.
A short but nice hike in the evenings. Beautiful views at the top.
I did not even hike all the way. I sat in a clearing and watched birds. Saw a turkey vulture, another raptor, and a bunch of stellars jays. I have a bad knee but coming here was still very nice.
Love it!
If youre in the Eugene area, and you want to hike a mountain, this is the mountain.
Nice start to a fun hike. Bring directions to find the right trail.
Beautiful site
Amazing view
Perfect for a morning hike to start your day!
Great short hike
Well kept paths and absolutely a beautiful hike.
Beautiful place to rest from a long day of towing
Great view and worth the hike
Great viewing place
