Very good mixture of nature, ponds, hills, forest and rock formations. Close to bison areas!
This is another preserve in the Nachusa region that would be fun to visit again. It is dotted with sandstone outcroppings that provide unique environments for flora and fauna. Well cared for, good trails and a variety of settings (woods, Savannah, marshes) to explore.
Nachusa Grasslands is an amazing work of prairie conservation. Hiking is scattered, but worth the trip. Tons of native prairie plants and if youre lucky, youll catch a glimpse of bison roaming!
Really neat savannah restoration. Casual look sees weedy woods, but with some imagination it is pre settlement Illinois. Some of the most rare ecosystem in the world. Great job Nature Conservancy.
This hike provides scenic views of restored prairie grasslands and St. Peter Sandstone cliffs. A bison enclosure is located north of the trail, so keep an eye out for the herd when you park at the end of the trail. The trail is an uneven coarse gravel road, so I wouldnt recommend taking a stroller (we tried that) or a wheel chair of any kind. It gets a little buggy in the lowlands near the prairies.
