The Grotto is the hidden gem in Dayton. Beautifully maintained flower gardens. Great picnic location. Easy access from SR35 at Gettysburg exit.

This place is truly beautiful. The volunteers have put so much time and effort making the gardens into an amazing sanctuary for veterans.

Very short little paved trail. Contemplative stroll vice a hiking location. Nice water features. When you are done head over to the cemetary and pay your respects to the veterans buried there.

In wintertime obviously the gardens are dormant but I only get to Dayton around the holidays. I had never visited this historic post-Civil War site and wanted to see it. Even in winter repose it is quite nice. The spring is still flowing so the waterfall is active. As a conscientious objector, I appreciated the Purple Heart memorializing a medic who died protecting two wounded soldiers.
