Our Ohio TuesDayTrips adventure was a Dayton History Trail. One of the stops was the site where the Dayton Aviation Heritage Trail begins its multi site experience. It is a National Park and the interpretive center is here. It is very well done as I visited last year. However, our stop this trip was because the Wright Brothers first business partnership was a printing operation at this site.

Very cool museum. The park rangers were very knowledgeable and eager to share what they know and the exhibits are very interesting. I especially recommend the film about the Wright Brothers and the hands in exhibits that explain a bit about how they came up with their plane designs. There’s a gift shop, bathrooms and water fountain as well and no admission fee.

An excellent visitor center with plenty of exhibits, many of them interactive which seemed to really energize children to learn more. Also, aside from the flight history, the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park bundles the life and works of Paul Laurence Dunbar into this park. This may seem strange at first, but when you see the poem written about the Wright Brothers, and learn about their friendship in school, it makes all the more sense. This was their neighborhood, and Wright Brothers even did business with Dunbar after schooling, since Dunbar used their printing press services for his early newspaper. In any case, it was great to hear a soulful reading of some poems I recall learning about in elementary school, including We Wear the Mask at one exhibit. Then, moving on to play around with flight controls at another exhibit. It is a well-done melding of the two parts, and provides a large amount to do in a visitor center of its size.It is a free admission, and a great afternoon with friends and family.

This was such a great little find, and a pivotal part of aviation history. After being to Kitty Hawk last summer, this was a meaningful visit to see where it all began for the Wright brothers. I can only imagine the travel necessary to get from Dayton to NC to test the Wright Flyer. This is about a 2-hour stop, including time for Junior Rangers to do their thing. Like most National Parks, the staff were incredible.

It was so facinating to see the early work of the Wright brothers. Tucked upstairs in the back is Paul Laurence Dunbar memorial. He was a black poet of some note. This is the visitors center for a National Area, not too many of those. You can go out to the field where they protected their aviation research at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Next door is the Air Force Museum. Plan lots of time!

Visiting friends and decided to do a bit of sightseeing. Being a flier, the Dayton Aviation Heritage Hoover Block was of interest to me. The building, run by the National Park Service, is full of displays and information about the Wright Brothers. I joined a tour led by Ranger Robert Petersen. This is a 45 minute walking tour around the neighborhood where the Wright Brothers grew up. The Ranger new his material, in depth. He new the history of the neighborhood, Dayton, and was well spoken. Highly recommend a tour with him. This is a great stop if you are an aviation buff or with family interested in how flying started. What a surprise! This has been on my list of things to see for 5 years. Imagine my surprise when I am introduced to a modern, organized, 3-story building on South Williams Street which features the life and times of the Wright brothers (including their 3rd bike shop/aircraft invention workshop). The guides were well-informed and very friendly.

Great experience at this place. Very nice grounds and museum. I learned a lot about the Wright Brothers here that I didnt know. The 30 minute movie is very good too and I recommend if you can watch that first and then when you walk through the museum youll get more out of it. You can spend 2 or 2.5 hours here. It has nice grounds if you want to picnic. The bike shop is just a quick mock up but check it out too. Definitely stop here for historical significance if you can.

Its nice to set foot in historical places. Being from North Carolina, the Wright brothers hold a special place so while in Dayton and after a trip to the National Air Force Museum, we thought we would check out this place as well. Unfortunately I was too late to get in the cycle shop but was able to walk around where their house used to be and read the plaques. Maybe next time well get inside as well!

The Aviation Heritage NHP is comprised of several different locations. There are all worth a visit as they add a different piece to the background of the Wright Brothers life and work in the area. The location here on Williams Street is free to visit, was well maintained and has been reconstructed to appear much as it would have when the Wrights were living here. A reconstructed version of their print shop is on the 2nd floor of the visitor center in the same location it had been when they worked there. There is a fair amount of information about the background of Dayton and the Wright Brothers and their aviation work in this visitor center, as well as additional info about Paul Laurence Dunbar and his family upstairs. This is a great place to start your journey along the aviation trail.

There is so much going on in this Museum, frankly its a bit disjointed. There is a separate shop that is the bicycle shop, that you have to have a Ranger escort you into, which is interesting but its a very short stop, but you have to wait until the top of the hour to do it. Then they talk about the Wright brothers downstairs in the main museum with a very good movie, that is the same movie at Huffman, but then upstairs there is a little bit on the printing press and then a little bit about the first African American poet to be printed by them and then a little bit about both of their families, and then as a complete aside theres the parachute Museum which is Aviation related, but nothing to do with the Wright brothers. So if you want to see everything going on at the Aviation Park I would say give yourself an hour and a half. But if you want to explore more about the poet, his museum is right across the street but only open on certain days so double check that because it was not clear to me when it was open, because its a state park but its associated with the national park so you can also get passport stamps there
