Great place to see some classic beautiful southwestern landscapes! The trail we took was hard to follow to the end. We somehow got off the trail we were on and couldnt find any markers to identify what trail we had wandered on to. We found some cliff dwelling ruins we werent expecting to find, which was great! Even though they werent much, they were the first ones Id ever seen. The difficulty of the trail wasnt as hard as we expected it to be, but it was very hot.

Awesome place if you like history. Seeing the ruines and artefacts is interesting. Mostly after thinking that Natives were mostly nomadic and I discovered that they had villages of hundreds of people.

Ive been coming to this place since before it was a monument. I love being able to bring my girls here, though they cant do everything I did.Its beautiful and you can make a quick stop or go all day. I prefer the winter months when its warm and not broiling!Bring water and protection from the elements - sunscreen, a hat, and a light jacket in summer/layers, gloves, and a beanie or the like. Let someone know youre planning to come to this location and for how long. If you arent familiar with outdoor Trails, bring a map and a compass.

I spend 4 or 5 days a year in this area. There is just so much too see. I usually camp at Hovenweep and Mesa Verde, so I drive by Battle Rock and the Sand Canyon Trailhead often and always make it a point to stop for a morning hike or late at night to catch the stars. Bring plenty of water and your camera. Keep it nice!

Great hiking and biking destination with some equestrian trails as well. This trail system is variable in length and difficulty see posted maps for distances and routes. Summer temps near 100 F take adequate water, sunscreen, and food. PLEASE PACK ALL TRASH AND FOOD SCRAP OUT WITH YOU THIS INCLUDES PET AND HUMAN WASTE. This place aint your personal toilet.

Stopped off for a quick hike Alon our road trip. Really nice trails, easy to follow and find markers. Lots of stunning views. We didnt have time to fo the long hike, but still enjoyed our exploration none the less. Be careful on your drive there and back, multiple police cars looking for speeding vehicles.

The ruins have degraded and are nearly gone at the head of the canyon. The smaller outliers are intact to the south. Worth the hike if you have the time.

Some of the parking spots are interesting as it is all slick rock. The trails are great and well marked. Take a minute to look over the area map just past the trailhead to pick your route and get a feel for the color system of the many looping trails. I also recommend taking all the spur trails, they all lead to amazing ruins or views. The canyon itself and the views of Sleeping Ute Mountain really leave you with more questions than answers about the ancestral puebloans that occupied these sites so many years ago.Bonus recommendation: Read House of Rain by Craig Childs before hiking this one. It will add some context to hikes in this area.

Stayed for a week right next to the entrance of the Sand Canyon Trailhead and loved the area. Spent many hours out on the different trails and many miles wandering, and only touched a tiny fraction of what there is to see from this location. Ruins, red rock, trails, old mines, wildlife galore, fantastic scenery, and the peace of the high desert. This was the first time I have been on this trail, it will NOT be the last. Already planning a longer vacation for next year and 90% of the time will be spent right on this trail system.

First off, we only knew where the trailhead was because there were a lot of cars parked on the side of the road. No signs along the road before here. Then, no signs that said where there might be sites to see, just a generic map. We came to a couple of people coming back down the trail and they described the mapping as lean, thin and non-descriptive. Thats about what we found. We hiked up a few miles not knowing if there was anything to see or not. Bummer. Hard to know if we shouldve kept going or not seeing as were in our 70s. Every time I went ahead to scout it out, I came across nothing.

What to know before you go: the parking lot for this trailhead isnt very large and is a bit remote. There are no bathroom facilities at the parking area or on the trail. Also, this isnt a developed parking lot--it has not been paved, or anything. You park on the rocks and accessing some (though not all) parts of the parking area requires a high-clearance vehicle. We actually didnt do this hike, but there is a map at the trailhead (you have to visit the Anasazi Heritage Center for portable maps) and there are trail markers. Apparently, there are several Pueblo/Anasazi ruins in the canyon.
