If you are just visiting Chicago, there is a lot of culture from which to choose, but I want to recommend Steppenwolf theater in the near north Old Town neighborhood. The nation’s premier ensemble theater, their plays have always provoked thinking and reflection with an innovative approach to theater arts. In this recent production, a Steppenwolf original (one of 40 that they have created), the storyline unites characters and music from South Africa and Chicago while offering provocative questions about love and loss. It was a great, dynamic experience of live theater, much like many of their productions are.

I always enjoy my visits to the Steppenwolf theater! In my opinion their programs are culturally well-rounded. As busy as it is, you can enjoy some drinks at the bar before the entertainment. The place is clean and friendly. You can also take your drinks, in a plastic cup, into the theater. I also appreciate their land acknowledgement prior to the start of each performance. Some performances also have guided post-show discussions like the one after, I am not your Perfect Mexican Daughter.

Having returned for the second time, my experience with the shows, staff, and location have been superb. Already looking forward to come back - even to enjoy the great lounge/bar connected to the theatre that has public access. Broad selection of cocktails, beverages, and light bites. Steppenwolf brings a very diverse cast and subject matter that this audience is in great need of.

An avid theater-goer, this is one of my favorite stomping grounds. And Im literally about an hour away.Still, so worth the trip. They consistently bring to life the mostthought-provoking, if not entertaining, productions. The scripts (and they are diverse, rich & unfailing discerning about putting on the work of the FINEST & complex playwrights, both new & old) are compelling, colorful narratives---thankfully, placed into the hands of some of the top actors in our fine city, so nary do they have a miss. I cant wait to continue to see what they do next. And yes, sadly, I will once again sit in HORRIBLE traffic to get there, just the cost of heading to the North side of the city where, fortunately, MAGIC awaits me. Yes, often enough its such a hassle to get around to the north side of the city from the south suburbs that I get distressed on the drives.... but afterward, theres never any residual thought in my mind that it might not be worth it. Just know... of course it is! Open yourself up, make that effort (if FAR like me), you will not be disappointed. oh and Yes, culture matters! I tell everyone as often as I can & its true (probably coining Chris Jones!).....Chicago literally has the BEST small storefront theater scene than in all the country (well OK....this isnt storefront but be very aware, those are often hidden gems, as well). Dont miss out!! Your mind can & is often transformed by GREAT theater if you allow yourself to experience it ---often & FULLY!

I am a fan of the Steppenwolf, one of the many who consider it a Chicago institution. The location is wonderfully close to public transportation, shopping and local eateries. I find the productions to be well-chosen, well-acted, and clevery staged. Seating, however, is a bit cramped. I recently had the pleasure of seeing an updated version of True West, and I am looking forward to The Great Leap.

There are two theaters in the building, one upstairs and one downstairs, which is the larger of the two. There isnt a bad seat in either of them. Downstairs there is a gift store that sells books and play- related items, the Front Bar, where beverages and a limited food menu are available, and a coffee counter. Segregated and unisex bathrooms are offered. The upstairs is smaller and more intimate, with a counter/bar that offers offers hot and cold beverages and snacks. Beverages may be taken into the theaters. The Steppenwolf Theater offers world-class plays and actors, many of whom are internationally known from theater, television, and movies. This is not Broadway in Chicago, but offers contemporary and classic plays that are complex, thought-provoking, and beautifully staged and performed.Go to the Steppenwolf to be challenged. Many nights post play discussions are held to let the intelligent and thoughtful audience work through and express their insights into, and questions about, the material covered in the plays.

The play was all right, but they insisted we provide our pronouns before we speak. I dont know about you, but when I see someone wearing a suit and tie, I think of a man. You simply need to look at someone to figure out what gender and what pronouns to use, there is no need for clarification. Frankly, it was hilarious, but still, pointless.

Steppenwolf has a mystique around it and is generally a great time. They pick the right shows for the current cultural moment, and even when, for example, a Tracey Letts play hits the wrong notes, the heart of the institution is in the right place. The company of Steppenwolf is world renown and many of the actors who have gone on to fame still return. That being said, the shows are often infuriating. You may leave with no understanding of why this show was selected and wonder why you continue going year after year.
