Had a wonderful time at Mercantile and Mash. Great grab and go options for breakfast and killer selection of house made Charcuterie and speciality cuts of meat. The restrooms were very clean and smelled like bacon! I highly recommended stopping by.

Wonderful adaptive reuse of an old factory into a Vibrant workspace. Over the Thanksgiving holiday we met with a freelance website provider in one of the office spaces and it was welcoming and gorgeous. I highly recommend the space as a great way to save a historic treasure And give it a new life!

Nicely upgraded center that has a couple of good eateries. I have been here for work and pleasure over the years and the latest round of renovations is top notch. Really convenient for a bridge walk too! Only down side of this is the train yard right across the street. Cant have everything I guess.

Super cool spot, from restaurants to a very cool store called The Community that hosts products from over 45 local artists and makers. This is a must see shop for all out of towners and even locals. A great place for gifts that you dont see everywhere!

As a part of the last freshman class to come to this beautiful building as a School was amazing. It was a honor and privilege to obtain my Associates Degree in Travel and Tourism here.To Obtain a education and life long memories in this building was a blessing. With out this location Johnson & Wales University would not be what it is today in 2016. Hats off to the dear Cigar Factory and the city of Charleston.

Constructed in 1882A.D. Lockwood, ArchitectThe Charleston Manufacturing Co., chartered in 1880, built this mill in 1882, engaging A.D. Lockwood of Providence RI., one of the countrys foremost experts on mill construction, to design and construct the building. The mill featured the latest technological advances of the day, such as electricity, steam heat, and a fire safety system. As a cotton mill, the factory was ranked 6th of the 20 or so cotton mills in South Carolina. The factorys mild success came to an abrupt end with the Great Earthquake of 1886.In the aftermath of the Earthquake, much of the skilled staff left the region and the building changed hands. In 1903, the building was leased to the American Cigar Company, producer of famous RoiTan and Certified Creamo Cigars, which established its operations in Charleston after the South Carolina and West Indian Exposition of 1902.Great success came with cigar production and as many as 1400 workers were employed at thenfactory in the 1930s.During the darkest days of the Great Depression, the Cigar Factory was one of the few civilian workplaces that provided secure employment for a full days wages.Cigars were produced in the building for 70 years and at its high point, 1.5 million cigars rolled out of the factory each day.In the late 1960s, the US government started requiring warning labels on Tobacco products and placed restrictions on their advertising. This pushed the American Cigar Company to focus on overseas markets and they eventually closed the e doors on cigar manufacturing in Charleston, in 1967.After the cigar manufactoring ended, the building was used for office and warehouse space over the next decade, as the owners struggled to find the right use for the building. In 1980, the Cigar Factory was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and shortly thereafter, they welcomed Johnson & Wales, the famed culinary school, which became the largest tenant.Consolidations at Johnson & Wales resulted in the Charleston campus being relocated to Charlotte in 2006.The building is slated to return to its original beauty, grace, and vibrant life, in the form of loft condominiums, office and retail space.Though, financial issues have forced a delay in the project.Note: Charleston Tour Guidebook
