This was a very informative museum. There were several hands on type of exhibits for the little ones. Our daughter was able to sit in a side saddle and a regular saddle, open drawers to reveal artifacts on display, and an Adobe structure to crawl through. There was a nice historical video playing in the movie theatre. This was a nice way to spend an hour or two. Entrance fees were $3 for children, 10 for veterans, and 12 for adults. Also close to down town Canyon, restaurants, and bakeries.

First let me say that we are very well-seasoned travelers and this review is not left lightly. It’s a very nice, clean, well-donated-to museum, with many different aspects to it, but it was overall underwhelming. We found ourselves wandering through loosely connected exhibits with varying items that didn’t fit together in obvious ways. The collection itself has great potential, but they lack intuitive organization. There was also a disproportionate emphasis on petroleum and the oil industry, so if that is something you are interested in, this is a great stop for the afternoon. We would have liked to have seen a more personal account from the perspective of the natives and pioneers in order to provide cohesion to what came across as scattered details. The highlight for us was the paleontology section, but perhaps because of our own personal interest. We really did enjoy our time here, but we want to give you a more accurate expectation of the experience. It was $12.50 for admission and may not be worth quite that much with the way it is organized at this time.

This is one of the best museums I have been to! Excellent permanent displays with really interesting special exhibits throughout the year. Pioneer Town is like being transported to the past! There is something here for everyone whether you are interested in natural history, Native American history, art exhibits, vintage cars or archeology. This is a must-visit if you are passing through the area. Perfectly encompasses the Panhandle region and spirit!

So great!! My favorite thing is how interactive it is, all of the drawers and buttons. I could have spent so much longer there. Only thing I really need to say is: PLEASE put a warning sign on the first video (of carving a buffalo). That was cool, but definitely would have wanted a warning, especially for children. Good job overall, highly recommend!

Awesome museum with detailed history of the area. It exhibits the oil industry of the panhandle as well as the fossils and minerals discovered in this ancient land. The art exhibited was great lots of Texas pieces. The guard on duty was very helpful. I personally liked the automobile exhibit with a 1900s electric car was very interesting. My wife and really enjoyed all of the Native American artifacts and how the bison was the most valuable resource for the plains people.

Really nice museum. We went with kids (10, 7, and 5), and they were not completely bored. It would be nice to go alone or only with other adults, but that will take another 5 or so years for me. Read everything and enjoy at a leisurely pace in my stead.

It’s a nice museum of the history of the panhandle. Lots of emphasis on oil and drilling. Neat exhibit on guns. Interesting Indian artifacts and exhibits.

Amazing museum about the local history in that area between natives and cowboys. But also the museum has oil history, pop culture, aeronautical and aerospace history, some classic art and contemporaneous history and culture!! They have a DeLorean :) I enjoyed. I paid 12 usd to get in on Friday around 10 am. But if you go after 3 on Friday is for free. They have special prices for veterans, kids and students from the college and a souvenir shop and a exclusive parking lot for visitors.

What a pleasant surprise! This is a must see when you are in Canyon. Prehistoric to present day, the exhibits are excellent. There is so much to see, and it is so well exhibited, the time flies by. We only got to the first floor, so need to go back another day to see the section on oil drilling history. I am trying to pick a favorite section, but cant seem to do it. Maybe the blacksmith, or the old cars, or maybe the ancient bones, or clothing styles, the old bar, the windmills, geology,...Sorry cant do it. Youll have to see it for yourself. Have fun!

I was impressed by the size of this museum. Some of exhibits were really interesting like the guns or paleontology displays. However, strange items would end up in places dirupting the flow of the exhibits. For instance, there was a pistol from the 1950s in an case about hunting in the plains.Just skip the pop culture exhibit. Its really just some pictures on a wall with little to actually learn.

I grew up visiting this museum, carried from exhibit to exhibit by my extremely patient father who, I now realize, enjoyed it as much as I did. My husband and I now bring our own children here when we visit my hometown, and again, my father carries them from exhibit to exhibit, reading and explaining to them. This museum has something for everyone--science in the form of the windmill, oil and gas, and dinosaur and early animal exhibits. There are social sciences in the form of the pioneer town, the WWI, and the automobile exhibits, not to mention well-curated collections of textiles, firearms, and other revolving displays. It is absolutely engaging for a child as young as 2, but also captivating for the adult who has been visiting this museum her whole life. There is a wealth of Texas Panhandle-relevant information here. It is a treasure and well worth a day trip if youre anywhere near.
