Not sure why the field, which is full of milkweed, would be mowed in late August. I estimate that about 100 Monarch eggs and caterpillars were on the milkweeds, as I found several on the dried up plants. The western Monarch population is facing extinction, but the eastern one requires help as well. Mowing the fields prior to the migration is a good way to help Monarchs by allowing new milkweed growth. A couple years back the field was also sprayed with pesticide of some sort, as the field was covered with dead larvae.
