Just strolled around the outside, but it is very well-groomed and landscaped with old live oaks and Confederate and Texas monuments dotting the grounds. The building itself is a brilliant reddish brown colour, unique among state capitol buildings. Worth a visit for any reason why you might need to visit the capitol. Cheers.

I’m not a super Texan by any means and in no longer live there but it was still great to visit the capital building. Great architecture to see. Parking was easy to find and going inside was free, which is always a plus. As for the monuments, yes some are being looked in a harsh light, and I don’t agree with them but they are there and yeah I took pictures of them. Anyways it’s a good place to go and also to go to have your voice be heard.

One and Only landmark location in Texas is the magnificent structure - State Capitol in the city of Austin.Recommendation for first time visitors*Take the 290 hwy and enter the South Congress Avenue to view the entire gigantic view of Capitol building. You also be crossing through Colorado river, auditorium shores and downtown view before reaching Capitol building.*Parking is the biggest challenge in Austin downtown especially near capitol building. Paid parking slots are available @10th ,11th street close to capitol building. Weekend mornings are the quiet time to visit the building.*Architecture - Inside the Capitol building, you need to spend atleast 2-3 hrs to explore each piece of the architectural design. Make sure you have ample time beforehand. There are photogenic spots to get picturized inside and outside but the view from South congress bridge beats them all.Have fun in exploring the Capitol building#HappyExploration

This place is a must-visit when in Austin. ️ Its a lovely place to walk, stroll, bike and skateboard outside this magnificent architecture. Its very photo-worthy place. I appreciate the fact that there are lots of trees and benches around the area. This is a free tourist spot but is well-maintained.To appreciate more of this place, you wont get wrong to get inside. The interior is just “woah”. Simply beautiful. There are three entry points to get inside. Often than not, the center always has a long queue so I suggest to go at the other side entrance. Also, it is best to visit this place during weekdays. Weekends will do but expect a lot of people but still you’ll love this place.Parking is just everywhere around the area.

Do You Have What It Takes? My wife and I visited the Texas State Capitol Building in May.As we were neared the main entrance we were greeted by a man on an electric wheelchair wearing a red MAGA hat brandishing a Confederate flag next to a sign that read Remember The Alamo. It was at this moment we thought to ourselves, do we have what it takes? Are we, one Northerner and one Brazilian, worthy of entering the State Capitol of Texas? As we neared closer the the entrance the man on the electric wheelchair seemed to stare straight into the depths of my soul. What was he looking for?Could he tell I was born north of the Mason-Dixie line? What should I do?As these thoughts raced through my Midwestern mind the man turned his gaze to a woman crossing the main path. His turning gaze gave us the window of opportunity we needed to pass by, undetected, into the main entrance where we seamlessly slipped in to an ongoing public tour.

The tour guide was engaging and informative, but it was a little tough to hear her and the content was a little dry. Great treasure that belongs to the citizens of Texas. There is so much to see and everyone who visits should take their time. My recommendation is to take the 30-minute guided tour first and then go on a self-guided tour just so that you get a little more background on the capital building. There is a basement that has a whole other section and if you visit Monday through Friday you can actually eat at the capital grille which has excellent prices on food. Theres a lot of history in the capital and there are photos that explain the restoration, how the capital was restored back to its original beauty, and also highlights the history of the first Capitol building. Dont be surprised if you go and there is a concert on the first floor of the rotunda. The acoustics are fabulous. The exterior grounds are equally as interesting. There are cannons from world war II era and there is a mural that highlights important people in Texas history. A great place and I cant wait to visit again

The Texas State Capitol is the largest state capitol in the US in terms of square feet. Only the US Capitol is larger. Its taller than the US Capitol by 23 feet. When it was built it was the 7th largest building in the world. It contains 2 1/4 acres of area, with 8 1/2 acres of floorspace.7 football fields of offices underground.Known to be the most impressive and breathtaking area of the Capitol is the Rotunda. This circular room is directly off the South Foyer and provides entrances to every part of the Capitol. On the walls of the Rotunda are portraits of Texass former governors and past presidents of the Republic of Texas. These paintings line the walls of the Rotunda all the way up to the fourth floor of the Capitol. The floor of the Rotunda, as well as most of floors throughout the Capitol, is made of terrazzo. Terrazzo is a mosaic flooring made by embedding small pieces of marble or granite in mortar and then polishing it until it is bright and shiny. The seals on the floor trace Texas history by representing the six flags that have flown over the state. The seal in the middle represents Texas as a Republic with its single white star and oak and olive branches symbolizing strength and peace. Directly below this seal is Texas in the United States. The other seals represent Texas under Spain, Texas under France, Texas under Mexico, and Texas under the Confederacy. This is the amazing Capitol dome which resembles the Nations Capitol in Washington. The Texas star in the center of the dome is actually eight feet in diameter and looms 266 feet above the Rotundas floor. The word Texas surrounds the star. If you clap your hands while standing in the middle of the Rotunda, youll experience the amazing echo the domed ceiling produces.Capitol Extension from above.Immediately north of the Capitol is the underground extension which was built in order to provide more space for committee rooms, offices, an auditorium, a public dining room, and the Capitol Bookstore. The extension covers over 600,000 square feet of space and has four levels with the two lower levels being for employee parking. Tunnels connect the extension to other state buildings. The extension has the feeling of being outdoors due to the massive skylights that provide natural light and spectacular views of the Capitol dome. There is also an outdoor rotunda that shows you how deep underground you really are!The Chamber of the House of Representatives is the largest room in the Capitol and used today as it was originally intended in 1888. There are 150 members including the Speaker of the House who presides over the body. Due to this large number, members vote using key pads mounted on their desks. Representatives do not speak from their desks but at the podiums at the front and back of the room. There are some very important historical paintings in this room that date back nearly 100 years. In fact, the original 1836 San Jacinto Battle Flag, one of only two flags remaining from the revolution, hangs in the House Chamber during sessions. You can find the House Chamber, offices, the old Supreme Court and the House gallery in the west wing of the Capitol.

The grounds are full of monuments celebrating the rich history of Texas contributions to our country. It also memorializes a time that challenged this Nation with the struggle of States Rights. The largest of any Capitol building in the entire U.S. including the U.S. Capitol. Definitely worth a visit, and yes it is made from granite (TX red granite).
