This is THE BEST trail in Los Angeles. Runyon Canyon has nothing on Big Santa! Lush greenery, waterfalls, campsites it has it all. Stunning views of the San Gabriel Mountains greet you before you descend into the canyon. Pack a light lunch and eat at the falls its all good and all God.

Love this place. Very scenic trails and miles you can go. I went on a weekend which was packed but arrived super early...otherwise half of your time will be spent finding parking and walking from your car to the trailhead.

We did Sturtevant falls trail which is about 3.6 miles out and back from chantry flats parking. The first .6 mile of the trail is a steep pavement road which can be a bit challenging while coming back from the hike. Rest of the hike is really pleasant with minimal elevation gain and is shaded throughout. Falls at this time (June end) have less water given the rains this year. But the pool is quite refreshing. Parking here is a headache. We reached around 11 am and had to wait quite a lot to get a free parking space. People had parked on the road way before the actual parking starts. So I would suggest reaching here super early or later in the afternoon when most of the crowd is going back. Overall, a very nice hike. We had 3 kids with us aged 6, 4 and 2.5 yrs. The elder ones had no problem walking the entire trail. We will definitely come back when there is more water to the falls.

How do you rate nature? This place is great but I want to discourage others from visiting so I can get better parking. Parking is rough on the weekends. Please pack out your trash and dont feed the bears. Yes, there are bears and it is really cool to see them but it is so bad to feed them and I will yell at you if I see you doing it. Ill say things like Hey! Dont do that, its really bad!Backpacking here is great. You can park overnight in the parking lot. It is first come first serve for spots and they can fill up with boy scout troops on Saturdays by the afternoon. Adventure passes are sold at the Arco, REI and usually up the parking lot.

The while park is awesome. Make sure you get there early if you want to park near the beginning of the trail. If you cant make it early dont let that stop you, even the walk up to the trail is nice. Make it to the waterfall, worth it. Beware of river snakes this time of year.

I went last weekend when the restriction was pulled off and it was AWFUL. At least 75% of the hikers werent wearing masks, and some people would have it around their neck for a decoration purposes only. There were a lot of people in groups as well which this was not allowed according to the hiking protocol.I understand if there were no one around at least.. but that was not the case. Also, this is a narrow trail and everyone just has to be physically so close whenever you are passing through.. just dont come to hike If you can not handle feeling short breathed and feeling trapped in masks for just a little while.

Very close to Monrovia and Arcadia, this place is perfect for weekend hiking. Not very difficult tracks and goes from rocky to fairly dense bushes. We went for the Hermit falls Trail, which went down pretty sharply in the woods down to the river bed. We had to cross the pebble river and then hike up the rocks to reach the falls. There is a nice place to enjoy water at the end of the walk. We went on a pretty hot day but amazed to see the rush of people over the hills. Someplace we experienced long wait to let people pass by in the narrow stretches of the trail. Our car had to be parked on the approach road to this place. There are old cottages along the route and have some good places to have a picnic. It is important to carry enough water or hydration as the dry weather can lead to cramps. There are no places for filling up bottles. However please do not leave away trash in the process.Overall its a nice outing which needs to improve and accommodate such number people during weekends or holidays.

Such a beautiful hike especially after all this rain weve received. Definitely recommend trekking on the trail above Sturtevant Falls.. Lots of pockets of ferns everywhere and beautiful water flow this Spring. Also check out the private cabins spread throughout the canyon as well. I also highly recommend purchasing an Adventure Pass to avoid being ticketed.

I love it because its so covered in plants and you see a lot of life here. We saw a snake, blue jays, lil fish and newts. Parking is cheap $5, you will see signs for where to pay.We found newts & carefully held one, then washed our hands after. (Newts have a toxin on their skin that will irritate you, just fyi for the kids) And please do not take them home we love to come see the newts and then put them back but people have been seen taking them home. :(Also their is LOTS of poison oak scattered throughout and some by the trail. Keep an eye out and dont go off trail.

Lovely place and a great area to go hiking in the morning. It can get quite hot in the afternoon hours so make sure you stay properly hydrated. At the end of the trail where this photo was taken, there are two ropes to get down. Use extreme caution to get down there as the rocks are quite slippery to those not wearing adequate footwear; I cant stress that enough.

I have been hiking her since I was a kid! Its a little grown over right now and it seems like the trails need a bit of maintenance. Other than that, we will be back because we LOVE the beauty! Its always busy, get there early, expect to pay or walk for the parking, and enjoy the Pack Station - which will be under new management soon!!PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE start servicing the pit toilets at least monthly (pump out) and clean and stock it daily! This is the 2nd hike out where I held it because the toilets at 4 points (bottom of the paved road) were foul beyond use. Forest Service, youre not doing yourself proud on this! Its such a popular trail that this maintenance should be obvious. Id even pay an entrance fee, $5 to park and hike, if the toilets were just USABLE!!

This is such a pleasant hike. You forget that youre in southern California. It starts out pretty easy following the creek up the canyon and then starts getting moderately difficult once you get onto one if the trails up to Mt. WILSON. If youre not going that far, this is an easy hike. Try to get there as early as possible to get a close parking spot. By 7:30, the lot is full and theyre already parking down the road.

Favorite hiking spot, there is plenty of shade along the path, beautiful scenery with water streams, flowers, birds, small rocks as well as a fee boulders here and there. The descendent slope makes it so easy to enjoy and keep going. The last part when coming back is what could be really challenging. On weekends and holidays parking might be frustrating, so plan to show as early as possible and carpool whenever possible. Also, take your water and a pick up after yourself (or your dog if it is the case), with more people visiting, it is a shame to find trash along the trails.

This is a great place to hike. There are plenty of camp grounds available and shaded trails. You will need a wilderness pass for the parking and be aware that the beginning of the trail is a steep drop into a canyon, which means its a steep uphill at the end. Ive been hiking at Chantry Flats for a very long time and I really love it here. You will need an adventure pass to be able to park at the trailhead or there is parking available at the pack store for $5 but it fills up pretty fast. The scenery is beautiful, green and mostly shady. Theres also cute little cabins along the trail.

It still blows me away that the Adams Pack Station is actually a place where people hire pack mules to bring stuff to peoples cabins in the wilderness. In L.A. County. Beyond that, its a terrific place from which to head off to Sturtevant Falls (and/or Camp). If youre feeling ambitious hike the 6 miles to Mr. Wilson Observatory and back (~5 hrs, round trip), or drop a bike at Mt. Wilson ahead of time and ride down Angeles Crest Highway to La Crescenta > Pasadena. Then get someone to take you back to Chantry Flat for your car. Itll be worth it. I promise. The big appeal is the natural beauty. The big hassle is parking. Make your way here early in the morning, and youll be fine. The later it gets, the harder to (legally) park your car. Plan ahead.
